The New Rule for O.T.

United States

If this passes, if a team that wins the ball in overtime in the playoffs doesn't score a t.d. , the other team gets the ball. What do you think of this new Overtime rule? Me, I hate it.Call me a dinosaur or a purest but I like the idea of Sudden death overtime. Win the coin toss , punch the ball down the field and score! How about you?

well i think if they are going to do it that it shouldn't be just for the playoffs it should be for the regular season too. It has already been passed for the playoffs and they are supposed to vote in May if they will change the rule for the regular season, but I am of the opinion if you are going to have the rule it should be the same for the regular season and the playoffs. I think that the new rule add to the possible level of drama just think that someone could settle for a field goal that in the past would of ended the game, but now gives the other team a chance to tie or to win the game and that was never possible before and since it is the playoffs both teams have played an entire season to have this opportunity and it is already in overtime and I think after so much has been put into that game and the entire season that both teams deserve a shot, but if one of the teams scores a touchdown the game ends so maybe some teams will take more chances trying to get a touchdown and that could lead to some great drama.

All this means for me is I'll be leaving when a game goes into overtime , just like I do when a hockey game goes to a shootout.I feee; they won't be happy until pro football looks like college.

I agree that regular season and playoffs should have the same rules for OT. Playoffs are already do-or-die anyway, so no sense in making it different from the regular season.

Does this mean they can't score a field goal? Is it a touchdown or nothing? Well, that is interesting. I can't say that I like it, but I think I still want to see it a few times to have an opinion about it. It does changes the complexion of OT play. Knowing that they just can't stop at 20 yards or so. They have to punch the ball into the end zone.

they can score a field goal, but the other team still gets a shot if they get the touchdown the game is over.

I got this suspicion that it just happened to be brought up after Favre lost. Had Minnesota won that game, would this even be discussed? That is my question. I can see why the change was made but why not and not sooner? This rule could have been modified better. If you're going to allow each team to have one chance, then go all the way with it and have it with touchdowns and field goals. After they've had one possession and the game is still tied, then whoever scores on the next possession wins.

I think that it is something that has been a long time coming. I biggest fear that the NFL has is that a playoff game, or super bowl will end with a start quarterback not getting a chance to win the game. I personally don't like the coin toss, I think that the home team should get the ball first, this way home field advantage is even that much more important in the playoffs. I do like the both teams getting the ball, the only question is how long could this go on? They are also talking about presenting this in May for the entire season. Could you imagine a Lions Rams game that could NEVER end?

My husband told me this just a bit ago. I think it is fair. If the team scores with a field goal, the other team gets a chance to score too. Then if they both only can get a field goal, the next team to score wins. However if the first time down the field, they score a touchdown, they win. Or at least that is my understanding of it.

That's it! I hate it. I won't watch any overtime game. I do the same thing with my beloved Hockey. When they so to shootouts I leave.
