Sean Hannity, You're NOT a Great American! | | | | I know some of you here are fans of Fox News and radio talk show host Sean Hannity and some of you have mentioned in your posts that he donates huge amounts of cash for the children of our fallen troops to go to college. He gets most of this money from his "Freedom Concerts" every year. Well, as it turns out it's true he takes in millions of dollars but most of it goes for private jets and fancy limos to cart him, his family and the rest of his entourage around. According to tax returns the highest percentage that actually went to the charity has been around 12%! Most of the soldiers' children only got $1000-2000 with none getting more than $6000. Ironically, this story was first broken by a conservative blogger! : http://www.examiner.com/x... Any thoughts? Not such a "great American" after all, is he, if he's using the children of our fallen heroes to line his own pockets? | | I am neither a fan nor a detractor of Sean Hannity since I don't do "personality politics" but I was intrigued by your post and decided to check it out. Turns out that it's just not true, or at least, not verifiably true. Sean Hannity does those concerts for the Freedom Alliance. This is not Sean's charity, it was founded by Oliver North. Sean isn't even on the board of directors. He's not listed as an employee. He draws no salary from it, in fact, several of the top directors of the charity take no salary at all. The charity has been give 4 stars by Charity Navigator and is Certified by the Independent Charities of America. If you want to have a look at their tax statements, they have them all available online. Although it may be true that in 2008 there were 167 recipients sharing $802,250 which means a little over $4000 each on average, there were also cash awards to 429 other recipients totalling $266,651 and expenses of $301,162 spent for "Morale, Welfare and Recreation" for more than 12,000 recipients. This totals more than 1.3 million dollars in charitable expenditures. Sean Hannity and Freedom Alliance both deny the allegations that FA has paid for luxury travel accomodations for Sean or any of his travel expenses. In fact, both Hannity and Freedom Alliance say that he pays all his own expenses. The blogger got all the information from "The unnamed source, citing an unnamed "guy" at Fox News Channel". Of course, this "unnamed source" must be more reliable than the spokesman of a well-established and highly-rated charitable organization. That's why he's unnamed... only reliable sources hide their identities. | | | | | | | kennyrose (5047)

| | Sheesh, this is what I get for posting without reading all the responses or researching her source. Annie's source even cited the DailyKOS as one of its sources. You're right, Charity Navigator rates them very highly as a charity. Also I think it's horrible for anyone to attack Sean Hannity over this as he is NOT in charge and is not the one spending their money or filing their taxes. He was just an easy target since he's far more well known than the person who is really in charge, Thomas Kilgannon. http://www.charitynavigat... | | | | jb78000 (3486)

| | Well you know I'm no fan of his and I think it's sad that such a small percentage goes to actual charity. Now I disagree with the idea that he's a fraud. As sad as it may sound, MANY charities are far worse. Public Administration and Non-Profit Management was my major in college and I was disgusted by the number of charities where 3% goes to actual charity. One of the worst big charities, who most people think is a great organization, is the American Cancer Society. Their coffers are full and their employees are VERY well paid. How much of the donations actually go to helping people with cancer? Around 20%. I remember the worst in Florida though were the ones using telemarketers. The Florida State Troopers charity and the Police Athletic league gave 90% to 97% of donations to the telemarketers that gathered them. Now anyone who has ever gotten those calls knows that they are the rudest telemarketers you will ever talk to. Even worse, once you donate to one charity over the phone (as I did before I knew better), they will ALL call you since they store AND SELL your information and many charities use the same firm for telemarketing. I strongly recommend people ALWAYS research a charity before donating so much as a penny. Charities for thing like veterans, firefighters, and cancer sound great, but that doesn't mean it's a good charity and there are no laws federally or in most states that have ever required a charity to spend any amount beyond a penny on their actual cause. | | | | | | | jb78000 (3486)

| | you're right and it is similar here. an awful lot of the money donated to charity doesn't actually go where it should be. this isn't really because of anything underhanded going on, its more inefficiency and poor organisation. a lot is wasted on unnecessary admin. i don't know about the states but here anybody can find out how a charity is spending its money - they have to make this information public. | | | | Taskr36 (6781)

| | Annie, I really wish I didn't always have to research your claims before posting. I'm glad I didn't spend my post insulting Sean Hannity or blaming him as others did since he is not in charge of this charity and there is absolutely NOTHING that shows the charity paid for any luxuries for him. JB, in this country you can find out where charity's are spending their money as well. It looks like the person that wrote this article though, made a large number of assumptions based on something a friend apparently told him and blamed Sean Hannity despite the fact that Hannity is not the president, founder, or CEO. He's just a guy who has raised money for them. | | | | anniepa (11666)

| | Taskr, you certainly DON'T "have to" research my claims before you post. You don't have to post to my discussions at all then I wouldn't have to waste my time defending myself against your personal attacks that go far beyond what topic of the discussion. You made it a point to mention DailyCos as a source but conveniently ignored the others, such as the Washington Post. | | Yes, you should always look up charities before donating money. Also, NEVER give to any charity through a telemarketer, even if it's a good charity like Make A Wish Foundation. The telemarketers take up to 97% of your donation themselves. | | | | | | | You Could Win a Cruise Do You Volunteer? Share Your Story & You Could Win A 7-Night Cruise!
