Nintendo DS Observation |
| |
| I know most kids have a DS now days my kids don't cause they don't take care of their things and I can't afford one for each kid or a replacement. Either way I was at work the other night and I saw this family walking thru and the kids were playing their Nintendo DS'. The kids were like zombies on that gaming system they were walking along never looking up to see the world around them. I wonder if they ever walk into things cause they don't look up!! Is this the new baby sitter while shopping? If the kids are glued to the screen they won't look up to beg for something in the store? Though I guess this isn't much different than the teens I see walking and texting constantly. | | | | | |

| | My twins each got a DS for christmas, and the oldest got a PSP. They aren't allowed to take them out of the house, and they rarely get to play them indoors either. They must behave and have their chores done before they're allowed to play them, so they probably only use them a few hours a week. I agree about all the crap they have that "babysits" kids though. Although I can't afford a brand new car.. even if I could I'd get one without the DVD player in the back seat. TV is another thing I don't let my kids watch much of, and I'd rather they look out the windows at the scenery while we're driving then get glued to some mindless television! | | | | | | |

| | I don't like the idea of a dvd player in the van either. That's what the radio is for and since we dont' take many trips anywhere that the radio wouldn't suffice. I dunno like I said it just bothered me that both kids were just absolutly glued. I admit my kids watch too much tv more so in winter but yeash! | | | |

| | My little 2 watch tv all day until the older 3 get home, then the TV gets turned off. If the TV is on while the older 3 are home they will all be glued to it and won't do their homework or chores or anything else... they become zombies. I can't stand that. | | | |

| | My 9 year old got a DSi last year for his birthday. He and the 3 year old kept fighting over the old DS, that I finally relented and bought him the 'i' version. I must admit that it sometimes a relief if they get their face buried in front of the screen. At least they don't have to bug me for whatever non-important things they see when we're in a store. But like everything else, I try to limit their time on the DS or DSi. And I would push them out the door if their friends come knocking for a game of football or roller hockey. | | | | | | |

| | I do my grocery shopping every week with 5 kids, and do not bring along any distractions. However I've armed myself with the word NO. I use it so often, they've stopped bothering to ask. If I feel like buying them a treat they will not have to ask for it as I'll tell them to pick one out. If I do not feel like buying them a treat then I will not and being asked to do so won't change my mind. Buying treats everytime you bring them along is what leads them to think it's okay to ask for everything they see, because they know you will cave once you get tired of hearing it. | | | |

| | Those Nintendo DSes are pretty durable, much like any recent Nintendo product really. Sure, you hear stories of Nintendo Wii controllers breaking TVs and stuff but the controllers themselves don't break at all. If you are going to buy one, I do suggest buying some sort of screen protector. Beyond that, not much maintenance or care is required... as long as they don't throw it around the house. | | | | | | |
