http://auctiva.com/edu/entry.aspx?id=eBay-NRF-Take-On-Retail-Crime The story is a little more in depth Basically a couple got sentenced after they got caught selling stolen toys on eBay. They boasted about it on the Dr. Phil Show in 2008. How dumb was that to begin with? A moment of fame turned bad. Sometime i just cannot believe the stories I read. Are people really that oblivious that this will not happen to them? The will not get caught? eBay and the National Retail Federation are planning a partnership (if it goes as planned) to catch and prosecute more retail criminals in the future and a few other things will be going as well. I like the concept but what happens to those that purchase in bulk or off Craigslist to resell on the online venue and find out later that the merchandise was stolen? Are prosecutable for being in the possession of stolen goods? Where is the fine line going to be drawn? Your thoughts?

You actually can be prosecuted for buying something that has been previously stolen, the name of that crime is receiving stolen merchandise and at least around here, it is a fairly regular occurence for someone to be prosecuted for it. The thing that I've learned in my life is that you have to be very careful about what you buy because you never really know where the people that you are buying from got the things that you are buying from them. I really think that something needs to be done to make it a more criminal activity to actually steal from someone and to somewhat decriminalize receiving things that have been stolen.

From what i understand it , the person where I live is out of the merchandise, and money unless they catch a person and have to pay restitution.back ( of course if they choose jail time they are screwed). A lot of bigger named companies are having things stolen from them and being sold on these places, so you think it is from a reputable company. You never know who is selling what and you take a chance. Its harder for the seller and harder for the buyer to buy & sell things on eBay any more.

Well put. I am not a fan of his show, but he did help get a some kind of program initiated to help catch these dumb people. Unfortunately the losses that eBay suffers is passed on to others that are playing by the book. Dumb criminals all the way!

HI Hatley, I agree, something has to be done. Ebay has changed a few things. It is going to be hard to catch and prosecute these people, but it does make it easier when they boast about it. They forgot to get that immunity clause from law enforcement before going on the air to warn people about these types of scams that they accomplished. Dumb criminals.
