Where would you travel if you had all the money in the world?  email this discussion to a friend?

I noticed that a lot of people are aiming to travel lately. With cheaper airfare, the burning curiosity to find out about the cultures in other countries can now be satisfied. :)

Personally, I would like to travel to places that have always sparked my interest. So I'm starting a discussion, for all of us to share the Top 5 destinations we would like to travel to, if money were not a problem. :)

Here are my Top 5 countries:

1) China - I've always felt a soul tie to this country. Also, I would love to see the misty mountains there, more than watch the sunset on the Great Wall of China.

2) Japan - I think it would be so romantic to have the cherry blossom petals fall on your head during its season. :)

3) France - Wine, cheese, chocolate, romance galore. I'd love to have a date with my future husband here. Escargot, anyone?

4) Scotland - I've fallen in love with the concept of kilts and bagpipes since I read it as a little girl. To go see the archaic, mysterious castles, to watch the bagpipes "live," and to wear a kilt... Even though these are for boys... Seem like an adventure worth praying for.

5) Venice and Poveglia, Italy - I've never really thought about Italy as a place to go to, but the thought of authentic pizza and pasta enjoyed on the gondolas of Venice, Italy, seems to quite romantic. Also, I would love to scare myself silly in Poveglia, renowned to be one of the scariest places on earth. I think it's accessible via Venice?

So guys, do share your Top 5 travel destinations. :) No thinking about money here. Just dream it, and we can do it!

Great discussion to start on a Monday, so thanks.

My top 5 would be:

1) New York: I love New York. Been there 3 times and would go back there in a heartbeat. Would love to stay there for a couple of months.

2) Brazil: A friend of mine who's Brazilian used to go on about the food there and I noticed the similarities b/w some of their dishes and Nigerian food (I'm from Nigeria), so I'd be interested in visiting to explore its culinary history.

3) Trinidad & Tobago (and Barbados): I have a book called 'African Survivals in Trinidad & Tobago'. As a result of the Africans that were taken over to the Caribbean during slavery, there are obviously remnants of African practices that still exist on various islands til this day. I wanna start with Trini & Tobago because of that book as it details Nigerian communities that settled there.

I wanna visit Barbados as I heard it's very beautiful. I also love mangoes so I'd be happy to hop from island to island just for that.

4) Greece - specifically Crete. I've been once. Solo. Loved it. Would happily revisit.

5)Cuba - I'd be interested in visiting Cuba for the same reason that I'd visit Brazil. They have a rich culinary history with swathes of African influences. I learnt about Cuban food after writing an article about it. Would love to start off by looking for and visiting a Cuban restaurant in London and then, one day, visiting Cuba. I also think the old women with their Cuban cigars speak to me in clouds of sass, confidence and knowing that only women know. Would love to meet them in person.

Thank you, again, for starting this discussion. Uplifted my spirit a bit.

Take care... (hope you get to go to your top 5)

Wow, thank you for your compliment, browneyed. :) I never knew a discussion on travel could lift spirits. :)

Regarding mangoes, the Philippines has great mangoes. While they really promote the Guimaras mango, in my opinion, mangoes from the town of Leon in Iloilo Province are spectacular. They're sweet, succulent and "creamy," nothing beats mangoes from here.

Barbados. I've been reading a lot about Rihanna and about Akon's controversy in Trinidad & Tobago. And I must say, this must be one pretty controversial set of islands. Either way, I notice that you're tracing your culture. That's nice. It's actually poignant, nostalgic and poetic. Are you a writer, by any chance?

The way you describe Cuban women kinda betrays the writer's flair..

And yes, thank you for your wishes of me getting to my Top 5; hope you get to yours, as well. :)

myLot reputation of 87/100. browneyed (964)  2 years ago

You're welcome :-)

Replying to your discussion has posed the (renewed) question: why am I not doing it already?

I've had the idea to go on a mango tour for some time now, so I might very well be extending that top 5 list to include Leon :-)

I have a problem with definitions. Of them all, 'writer' is the one I feel the most uncomfortable with (for some reason), but yes, I do write; not as much as I used to, but yes.

When you do get to any one of your 5, do let me know - would like to know how it's going for you. I'll try and do the same.

p.s.: I don't know if you've ever heard of a site called JourneyWoman.com, but you might find it useful.

Take care...

I am very lucky because I have already done much of the traveling I have wished to do. Like I went around the world when I was 20 years old. In my twenties I went on a safari in Kenya and explored the Holy Land. When I was 29 years old I visited New Zealand and some of the South Pacific Islands. During my thirties I have been to the Seychelles and the Maldives. I have been on a trip to Mexico, Belize and Guatemala. On my last trip I went to Cape Town and the Garden Route. I shall be going to Vancouver on my next trip.

My dream trips are:

1. Island hopping and snorkeling in the Philippines. That will hopefully come true.

2. Sailing around the Galapagos Islands. I doubt I will be able to afford that trip. I wish to see all the amazing wildlife.

3. A trip on the Trans Siberian Railway across Russia, into Mongolia to China. I wish to walk along some of the Great Wall. If I can ever afford the visas I will make sure I do that trip.

4. A journey to India to see the Taj Mahal. This might happen when my children are older.

5. A trip to Machu Picchu with my friend that lives in Chile. I hope that one will happen next year.

I wish you happy traveling. Dreams can come true so good luck.

myLot reputation of 87/100. browneyed (964)  2 years ago

Wow, what a journey your feet and mind have made. I'm making tentative steps to shake off the fear and start exploring the world.

Here's hoping we all get to go to our top 5 destinations.

Take care...

Wow, Maximax! This is amazing! I've read about the Galapagos, too, and yes, I'm also intrigued..

As for your trans Siberian railway trip... Wow. Something I'd love to do as well.

Macchu Picchu.. I've read about that too. :) The knots, right? The mysterious Incan race that disappeared, am I correct? Wow. Best of luck to you!

And lastly, whenever you're here in the Philippines, do let me know. :) I'll be glad to take you around, if you're headed near where I am. :)

Best of luck to you as well, and blessings!

I love going to different places here and abroad. however, when I have got a serious illness, i got scared of traveling particularly to far places. If God would allow me to live more years, I would definitely visit these travel destinations:

1. Hongkong- I have been to HK for several times already. I soo love this place. It's like my second home.

2. Paris, France - Would love to see the famous Eiffel Tower and experience how is it like to live in Paris.

3. Japan- I would like to taste authentic Japanese cuisine and discover the newest gadgets out in the market :D

4. Carribean - Though I don't know how to swim, I still consider myself a beach buff :p

5. Italy- I would like to visit Italy with my partner-in-life.

There's 3 places I really want to go and if I had the money I'd love to spend lengthy holidays in all 3 places. They are as follows:

1 - Japan: Home of cutting edge technology, and beautiful heritage. I'd love to see "the old ways" there, but at the same time I'd love to see a lot of the new technology.

2 - Canada: I have a lot of friends there, and it would be great to visit them!

3 - Antarctica: This place houses one of my most favourite animals in the World...PENGUINS!!! I would love to holiday there and just be face to face with penguins, that for me would be pure awesome!

I haven't really studied that many places that I want to travel yet because I haven't had the money to really even think about traveling anywhere but if I had more money here are the places that I would love to visit:
1. Hawai- There are seven islands that represent the seven chakras of the body and it is a very spiritual place. Also one of my brothers is building a temple their and I would love to see his work and help him work on it also.
2. Italy- It looks like a beautiful place and Italian food is amazing. Also the Temple of Daman Hur which is an amazing temple that looks like it was actually built by divine forces. It's one of my goals to visit this place before I die.
3. Japan or China- I would enjoy visiting an Asian country because I like the designs of their buildings and they also have some pretty interesting technological advances that America probably doesn't see. I would love to travel Europe at some point in time as well. It would be really interesting to see all of the different cultures.
4. Tibet- I would love to also visit temples in Tibet and also travel in the Himalayan mountains in search for Babajii this immortal spirit that I've read about in a book called the Search for Immortality.

What a great question! Here's my Top 5:

1) France- I took French classes in middle/high school, and have always been fascinated by anything French. There isn't one specific place in France I'd go--I'd travel all over the country!

2) Spain- I took Spanish for a few years in high school (after I got tired of learning French! lol), and learned to love their culture as well. I love the language, the history, everything! Again, I'd travel all over Spain.

3) Puerto Rico- I have a sister who's adopted, and whose birth parents were part Puerto Rican...I've been determined to visit there (with her) to show her what her heritage is.

4) China- I've always loved the history in this country, and would love to see all the amazing sites.

5)Iceland- I'm not sure why--I think I just like the name, and would love to say I went there!!

I would take my kids everywhere! Starting with the countries of our heritage so I guess we would start up in NY to learn about their Mohawk culture from their father's side then over to Europe to visit and learn in just about every Northern European country..lol. I am Irish, Scotch and German, My husband is a little of just about everything else though all you have to do is look at him to see that he is mostly Norwegian minus the fact that he has that touch of Mohawk that has left him with a lot less facial and body hair then any European. I guess after that I would love to go to the Middle east and Asia.

The last time I traveled was in 1996, when i went to Sydney to visit my cousins. After my grandpa was ill then passed away, the birth of my nephew and now my grandma is getting weaker, we never think about traveling again. but still I hope someday I can travel the world, but before that, I want to travel around Indonesia first, because there are so many beautiful places here that we rarely know. After traveling my country, this is the list:

1. Mecca,Saudi Arabia-I hope someday I can perform minor hajj ritual or called"umroh"with my parents

2. Australia-I want to visit my cousins again, see the Opera House etc

3. Canada and the USA-I haven`t been to Canada and the USA yet. I want to see the White House and Liberty Statue.

4. China-I want to see how China has developed from its big cities like Guangzhou, Shanghai etc. I want to see the Great Wall and some historical places

5.Singapore-small and clean city. I also have a cousin there.

Besides this list, I also want to travel around Europe and Latin America countries. I also want to visit some Asia countries which are so exotic like Thailand, India, Vietnam. Wish I had lots of money to make it come true.
