I am using Sony but I would rather prefer Nikon. Nikon lenses are better than the two.

i prefer the olympus brands because they give vivid colors. They are also user friendly so there's not problem with first time users. I currently own an E-3 and an E-420 as my back-up. when i am on the move i usually bring my E-420 because it is compact and easy to carry.

My dad owns a Canon, and loves it, he as owned several through the years. I was given a Nikon D40 and lenses for Christmas '08. I love the functions it has, and all it's capabilities. It still amazes me sometimes at the pictures I get using that camera. If I buy another, it will just be an upgrade of the same brand. I think that a lot of people, once they use one brand, if it's good they will stay with it. As far as looking for a famous brand, when buying something with the price tag of a DSLR, yes, I do look for name brand, quality, and customer service of that company.

I only have Canon cameras but it's mainly because that's what I'm used to. I like the choice in lenses but I don't think Nikon or Sony are any worse, it more a question about what you start with and what you like. My best "travelling" friend has a Nikon which is a bit stupid, if we had the same brand we could have brought lenses and swapped. I often do that when I go somewhere with a friend of mine in London.
