Vitamin D: new guidlines... Are you following them too?  email this discussion to a friend?

For many people living in the Pacific Northwest, physicians are now telling them to start taking a vitamin D supplement. Lack of sunshine is a serious matter here; in fact rickets and osteoporosis is higher than other parts of the country.

Today, I saw Vitamin D formulations of infants under 1 year old; for non bottle-fed and/or formula fed children as well...

Are you taking an additional Vitamin D supplement? I started two months ago under my Interist's urge and my mood and muscles feel much better.

I've been taking Vitamin D for some time now. I take 400 units. it is supposed to help the body absorb calcium, help you feel less achy, Helps the nerves and is supposed to add at least 1.3 years to your life.

Interesting discussion as I have recently read something about taking Vitamin D suppliments, especially if you are over 65.
I can see why, helping keep our bones strong because Vitamin D helps us absorb the calcium better.
Personally I don't take Vitamin D regularily but I do take it.
Maybe I should be taking it more often although am a ways from 65 years of age yet..
Once I took too much Vitamin D and I felt terrible. It was like I had sunstroke.
In the summertime, I enjoy the sun a lot and am in it as much as possible so avoid taking Vitamin D in the summertime anyway.

I try and follow the guidelines. Last year my rheumatologist did a vit D testing and a bone density test. I failed big time! I'm now on 50,000IU of Vitamin D twice a week in hopes they can raise it. It was so low that he was extremely concerned. And, I do have osteoporosis, which was made worse because of chemo drugs hurting my bones (marrow) too. I never really thought I was low in D, so I was surprised. I spend a lot of time in the sunshine, well, whenever it's not freezing out. I live in a snowbelt area, so in the winter I know I don't get enough sun, and when I'm out I'm so bundled up that sun could never find it's way in lol.

It has been a hot topic in both and conventional and alternative medicine lately because vitamin 'D' deficiency is widespread and seems to be related to so many health concerns like -osteoporosis, depression, heart disease and stroke, diabetes and cancer. and also suffering parathyroid immune function, weight loss etc take good diet and prevent this disease immediately consult a doctor.

I live in the Philippines and the sun really shines here all throughout the year. I always go out under the sun every morning from 6:30AM to 7:30AM to get enough Vitamin D.

I'm afraid I must say that I do not. I'll go buy supplements and then they end up sitting in my drawer or the medicine chest until they expire. I also hate the suns heat on me and I know thats supposed to be the best way to get vitamin D. I just can't stand it.

Yes, I take a Vitamin D supplement, prescription strength. It seems there's no end to the studies done on it lately and they've found that it affects so many different things. It would probably be wise for everyone to be tested to see if they're deficient.

Mother's milk contains Vitamin D, but formula up to now has not included it, which in my opinion, was a stupid mistake. How many babies have started life deficient in this vitamin because of that?

The recommended daily allowance of vitamin d3 is around 200 IU per day. However, many argue healthy adults should gradually increase their dose to 2000 IU per day or sometimes even up to 6000 IU for pregnant women.
