Olive oil, fish oil, and flax (seed or oil) are all more effective than onion or garlic. Of course, nothing is stopping you from combining onions and/or garlic with these oils to maximize the benefits.

What you say is exactly right.Merely taking onion and garlic is only part of the diet.Olive oil,fish oil of fatty fish and flax seed are all effective in reducing cholesterol.I'll follow your good advise and add them to my diet.

Well garlic and onion has a big role because it is proven anti oxidant. This may help to prevent ldl's from being oxidised. In this way the cholesterol build up that clogs the arteries could perhaps reduced.

Onion and garlic will help, but start with a liver detox if you have high cholesterol. Most of the cholesterol in our bodies is created by the liver instead of eaten by us. Also, avoid vegetable oils except for olive oil and coconut oil.

Your point about liver detox has opened my eye.Onion and garlic could help to an extent but not totally.Could you tell me a method to detox the liver?Olive oil i've been reading especially for its benefits to heart for sometime now.But the point regarding coconut oil is new and i remember reading an article that cooking in coconut oil has beneficial effects.

Detoxing the liver involves a juice fast (preferably organic) and then a diet of fruits and vegetables for a limited time. Three to four days of the juice fast followed by the same length. Different doctors have different ideas of exact times, so you can probably just listen to your body.

Hello, Picjim. I live in Spain, and I eat a lot of olives, as well as using olive oil for cooking. Olives and olive oil not only lower bad cholesterol, they also boost good cholesterol. This is borne out by the fact that in Greece, where they eat as much fat as they do in America, the incidence of heart disease is much lower, because fat in the Greek diet comes exclusively from olive oil. Here in Spain, hardly anyone dies of heart disease. We use a lot of onions and garlic as well, so it's probably the combination of the three that helps heart health.

Hello, Sandra.i remember reading a while back that the Mediterranean diet which includes olive oil and red wine could be the reason for low incidence of heart trouble in that region.Your view bolsters the point that despite consuming fatty food there is low incidence of heart trouble due to cooking with olive oil.The fact that there are few fatalities due to heart trouble reinforces your view.Garlic and onion added to this healthy way of cooking aids in keeping people free from cholesterol.

I have heard this many times that they help to reduce cholesterol if eaten in right proportion.Eating these things too much can also create problems.
Apart from this one should do excersize and eat simple food ,less oily to keep tab on cholesterol.Only eating onion and garlic doesnt work.

HI Piya.I endorse your view eating right and adding these foods help in controlling cholesterol.Consuming in the right quantity has beneficial effects as you've put it aptly.Plenty of exercise with good diet is ideal.Merely eating garlic and onion and gorging on fatty food is harmful and i agree with you on that point.

If you are geneticaly inclined your body will produce bad cholesterol seemingly out of fresh air. But if not then you can do a very good job by cutting all things white from your diet and eating no saturated fats. If you can do this it's a lot easier than trying to correct the problem once you have it.

What you've raised has opened me to a new line of thought.Genetics could also be a factor in creating bad cholesterol.Diet as you've mentioned has an impact unless one is genetically so wired.I accept your view that its better to take precautions rather than react after one has high cholesterol.

Yes, I believe so. The School of alternative medicine recommends, garlic onion and ginger as miracles from the kitchen that will take away most of our ailments. for example, a cut onion will take away germ from the room. If someone has the flu,just cut an onion and leave in his room. He will likely be on his feet and the onions will have turned darkish. Try it.happy

Thanks this is one view i haven't heard or tried as yet.The next time my child gets sick or someone near or dear to me falls ill due to flu i'll try this alternate remedy.

My mom used to eat them raw and said that they are good natural cholesterol busters. She's almost ninety. The fact that she doesn't have high-blood pressure and any heart diseases made me want to believe. I eat them raw with my food to make them palatable. I hope it's as good as what my mom said.

I think your mom is fine example of the effect of consuming raw onion or garlic.The fact that she doesn't have major ailments bolsters the theory that onion and garlic are good for health.But the factor to be considered is whether there was a family history of such ailments.This was an article i read in the readers digest regarding garlic.It was mentioned that one should consume 2or3. I used to eat them raw with a salad of cucumbers,tomatoes,carrots,onions and lime.
