Where you live, are you able to recylce? | | | | Recylcing has become second nature for me, no tossing waste paper in the garbage, plastic bottles, soda cans, cardboard, empty milk cartons --into the recycling bin you all go! I compost, too, but that's a topic for another post... Anyway, where you live, are you able to recycle? And if you are, do you do it? I live in Oregon and am always taken aback when I travel to other states that don't recycle. I have this urge to run over and grab plastic bottles and soda cans when people are nonchalantly throwing them in the trash, but then what can I do? Yes, imagine me traveling home with a bag filled to bursting with recyclable material; happy as that would make me, it's just not going to happen. Efforts are being made by more and more manufacturers these days to use recycled material in their products, whether it be paper, running tracks made from parts of ground up shoes, or fleece dog beds stuffed with recycled (broken down, in this case...) plastic bottles. Recycling's certainly not going to fix all our environmental problems, not my a long shot, but it can do a little bit to alleviate them! | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |

| | Here in my home town, it is not possible to recycle, because of space constraint, whereas at the farm we recycle, rain water, and all the waste, including human abd animal excreta. People lack knowledge of recycling, persons like you are necessary to impart recycling knowledge. May, mother of nature bless you abundantly for your service. | | | | | | | Catkin (302)

| | Thank you, and I understand, space can definitely be an issue. I'm glad to hear that you're able to recycle many different things on the farm. It's beneficial in so many ways, a lot of which people might not even dream or think could possibly be related, yet they are! I hope there are many others like me who are also working to spread awareness. :) | | | | | | | Best Garbage Disposals Top 10 Best Garbage Disposal Reviews And Consumer Complaints. www.Garbage-Disposal-Reviews.com | add comment | | | |

| | Yes, I recycle. It is good to recycle because it prevents having so much trash and dirt thus preventing so much pollution. I live in the PI, but even if I try to recycle and the government already had an activity about recycling to help people recycle, many are still hard headed and not recycle, it's so sad. But I still I try to recycle as much I can. I keep bottles, plastics, metals etc. and sell them to recycling plants. | | | | | | | EvrWonder (1930)

| | Wow, you sell them to recycling plants? Lucky for you. We give it to them here. For appliances we pay for them to recycle it for us. We also pay dearly for things like household batteries. It costs a lot to recycle them. I am surprised that you can sell your recyclables to a recycle company! | | | | Catkin (302)

| | It usually depends on the materials being recycled, but wouldn't it be a huge boon to the recycling effort if more people were spurred to do it by the thought of a monetary reward? The only problem is the source of the funding that would be required...taxation would be the most likely option, and we all know how much people love paying extra taxes! | | | | EvrWonder (1930)

| | Good point Catkin. I don't ave a problem paying for certain items to be recycled. I rather that then be taxed more. I was shocked when I took the household batteries in to be recycled. It was very expensive. $5 per pound and they weigh, a lot! A coffee make cost me $5 as well. No worries, at least it is being properly discarded. | | | | kharlav (1317)

| | Oh really? I feel lucky that we are paid to recycle. We are even paid big amount for batteries. But plastics and cans are cheap, sometimes we just give it to poor people whose ways of living is just looking for things that can be recycled and sell them. The heavier the better. | | | | EvrWonder (1930)

| | That is amazing. Maybe I should send the batteries to you, lol. Yes, here we pay, dearly so to dispose properly of items so they do not land in the landfill. A lot of people still toss unwanted and even toxic items into the general trash, heading for the landfill, because they are not going to pay to trash these items. For whatever reason we are charged to properly dispose of certain items. I have two drip coffee pots and now a full sized household dryer that I have to dispose of, at my cost. I am amazed that you get paid to take your rubbish in. Good for the Philippines. Perhaps Canada could learn something about the recycling program(s) from your community. Thank you very much for this input. I find it very interesting. | | | | | | | Buy Discounted Paper Rolls or Sheets of Quality Paper www.go2paper.com | add comment | | | |

| | I strongly support recycling and it is a second nature. Becomes a habit. I have just learned that London Drugs in Canada will take back all product packaging for recycling. This a a great idea on their part. I used to live in the capital city and we recycled everything. Then I moved and I am so appalled that the city I now live in recycle nothing but paper and cardboard. The returnables don't count. Actually when I lived in the Capital I worked in a commercial Recycling plant on the conveyor belt sorting. What an amazing processes all that recyclable material goes through. Quite amazing actually. What is crazy is what people throw into their recycle bins. Like "that's not recyclable". Geesh! I have many ideas of how big companies can contribute to more environmentally packaging. There are many areas regarding recycling that are great topics of discussion. Education is key here. I still find people who say that they don't recycle and conclude "why bother". I get very riled up, somewhat excited and try not to blurt it all out so to sound as disgusted as I really am as I feel it is my place to at least try and educate. Unfortunately some people just don't care. As painful as it is for someone who is as passionate about recycling as I am. I actually taught my Dad to recycle and now he saves everything. When I visit we make a big trip to the recycling. They have huge big bins for glass, plastic, paper. They take electrical appliances, metal, car tires, batteries, florescent fixtures and more. Pretty much what most recycling depots take. We take our household garbage to another place where it is trucked out to the landfill so we try to keep that waste down as much as possible. I am out of town at the moment and here we do recycle everything. I am on a small island and recycling is heavily promoted. I work in a green industry which makes me proud. This morning walking through the forest park with my dog, we collected returnables that people just threw into the bushes all over and picked up garbage as well. Just because it is there and is an eye sore not to mention not a benefit to the environment. We threw the garbage in the trash can and left the big garbage bag of returnables at the return it bin. I wasn't about to put in each can, bottle and plastic container one by one. The parks will pick up the bag when they go through and empty the return it bin. I would like to arrange and hold a clean the park day as we do here on the beaches often. I am also into conserving energy and water the best I can. I plant native and drought resistant plants. I compost as well so will wait for that discussion ;) | | | | | | | Catkin (302)

| | Oh wow, I commend you for all you do! If only everyone was so proactive. It's so true, though, a huge part of it is education and getting people to actually care. No more of this "why should I care?" and "it doesn't matter if I don't do it, I'm just one person" --if everyone felt that way, nothing at all would get recycled, and then where would we be? You're more than welcome to start the compost discussion, Evr, I'm certainly not going to get around to it tonight. :D | | | | EvrWonder (1930)

| | Hi catkin, I wish more people were on board to recycle also. I get frustrated when I run into people who simply don't think that their efforts would make any difference because it would. I just try to educate. When I worked in the commercial recycling, I was on audit for a bit, so I was outdoors and running into many home owners dropping off recycling. As well as city officials and garbage truck drivers. It was a real eye opener. Education is the key. We found that a language barrier was most common for those not recycling properly or at all. Believe it? School programs is the best place to begin with the educating regarding recycling and reducing our environmental footprints. For the most part, we are doing pretty good. At least the ball is rolling! I have not started a discussion regarding composting and do not have time this morning. It is a very good topic for discussion however and is something we all could be doing. Makes wonderful soil amendments. Do you garden Catkin? I have searched discussions for simply "Composting" and see that there are some discussions already on the topic although the posts are rather aged. Perhaps search before posting so to start a title not already posted. I will wait and see. If I haven't seen a discussion regarding composting posted by yourself and I have time, I will do so, thanks. It is a terrific idea and a benefit not only to the environment but to our gardens. | | | | | | | WAREHOUSE Fresh batteries Duracell, Energizer, Panasonic, Watch, AA, AAA, C, D, 9v, Lithium WWW.BatteriesAndButter.com | add comment | | | |

| | I try my best to re-cycle and bring empty bottles and things downstairs to the mini-store, but even when I am lazy or forget, there are people here who routinely go through the trashcans prior to the garbage trucks and sort out recycle items. Whatever they miss the garbage guys do. | | | | | | | | | | Custom Essay Writing! 100% Custom High Quality Writing American Writers Only! www.domypaperforme.com | add comment | | | |

| | Where I live it's possible to recycle and there are containers for all types of material. I sort the garbage as much as I can, but I probably threw a bottle or something in the trash every once in a while. I believe it's good though, that we have this opportunity and recycling sort of becomes a habit. It's about time stuff is being recycled to use our resources wisely instead of just waiting material when it can be used again. | | | | | | | | | | Writing Paper Looking For Writing Paper? | | Yes, as in most of Norway there's recycling stations for delivering glass, metal and paper. Everyone also has 3 trash bins, one for paper, one for plastic and one for everything else. Twice a year they empty the red box where you can put light bulbs, small electric articles, spill oil, leftover paints and things like that. There's also a Fretex box by the recycling station, where you can put shoes, clothes and other things that can still be used and the Salvation army either sells it or sends it out into the world to someone who needs them. There's also a rule, I think it's a EU regulation, that if a shops sells something they have to take it back to recycle if you bring it in. I think recycling is good, I agree it won't save the world on its own but it can help a bit. And it can help save money as for someone if they can buy used items. | | | | | | | Catkin (302)

| | I wish we had a nationwide regulation like that in the US! I suppose it would end up being determined by state governments instead, but then there would be all kind of complications with the many, many products that are manufactured in one state and sold in a bunch of others where the regulations might be different. Hm... I like the idea of this red box. Is it a box that each household has and just puts out or takes somewhere to be emptied twice a year? Or is it a public box that the community contributes to over the course of the year? | | | | Torunn (1536)

| | It's one box per household. A week or so before they collect them they puy a note on the door, you put them by the other dumpsters in the morning and collect an empty red box in the evening. | | | | | | | Now: Toilet Paper -63% Compare prices now and save up to 63% on great value Toilet Paper! www.Toilet-Paper.best-deal.com | add comment | | | |

| | That's great that you do so much! If only everyone was so good about reusing everyday products that most people probably don't think twice about tossing out when done with them. I really ought to start going the jar route when lacking up leftovers for storage in the fridge. I just got a jar of jam and a jar of mustard today --now I'm excited to finish them off so I'll have some empty jars to use. :) | | | | | | | Junk Removal Got Junk? Have It Removed For Less. | | Where I live, the city used to have a recycling program. They'd have us put our recyclables into plastic bags and put them into the bottom of our trash can. Then when they came to pick up the garbage they'd place the recyclables into another truck. But I guess we don't have the money for it anymore and they cancelled the service. We can still take stuff to a recycling center at a grocery store but we often forget or get too busy. So the stuff is just piling up in the garage right now. I just don't want to just throw it away. | | | | | | | Catkin (302)
