New 10K PR!  email this discussion to a friend?

Well, after resting my foot for a few days it wasn't quite back to normal, but with some wrapping I was able to race on it. I started out the race slowly, but after mile 2 I didn't notice the pain of my foot. But I couldn't take off at that point anyway because the beginning was downhill but then it was rolling hills, and then mile 3 to 4.5 was all up this horrible hill. I didn't even bother to look up the course map before running this, which was probably a good thing or I would have quit on the hill and started to walk. But I didn't, because I could only see a little ways ahead at a time and kept thinking "it will over be over right after this turn, all downhill from here". Then it finally got to a few trick downhills (downhill only for a super short distance) and then there was a good downhill stretch, and then a hill before the tiny downhill at the very end, which I sprinted like mad. And I came in just under 58 minutes. About a 2 minute PR despite the crazy hill.

And now, I am going to rest my foot! My foot was definitely happier with my regular uncushioned socks, so if I run at all tomorrow I'll make my foot really happy and go barefoot.

Brava! You did it! You ran And finished. I feel like that parent that Wants to Fully understand the sport their child does but they don't so here come the questions. did you break the time you wanted to? Are you glad you did this race instead of the barefoot one? I love the idea of you Not mapping out the race before hand. It seems like you took it as it came . That's what great athletes do. You know that saying " the best laid plans..."I'm so proud of you. I thought about you around 9am EST. I was so glad I sent my best wishes when I did. I Knew I would forget.so let me say it one more time Brava! Go Pigglies!!

Thanks! I wanted to break 55 minutes, but with this hilly course that would have taken a miracle even without the foot pain. I did meet the goal I came up with though when my foot was hurting initially, that I would be happy if I could just run the thing at a better time than my last one and not having to stop and walk (which so far I've never done during a race other than the marathon, knocking furiously on wood here).

I think I would have had a lot of fun on the barefoot one in the sand, but on an injury any race in the sand would have been a bad idea so I am glad I did this 10K instead. Plus, it was fairly scenic and in a beautiful area.

Missed it by 3 minutes! Damn! But with an injury and a very hill course I am still very proud and you should be too.and you didn't catch cold! By the way, did you find a sunscreen that worked? If not, look for Coppertone Sport. I saw a commerical and it may work. Thanks for explaining . Now I understand. When is you next race?

myLot reputation of 90/100. Pigglies (5141)   ranked 1 out of 75 in running  2 years ago

Yeah, 55 minutes would have been a hard pace for me... but I may try to beat it sometime this summer on a flat or mostly flat course. And yes, I'm definitely glad I didn't catch a cold again! Or get a fever like on the marathon.

I still haven't found a sunscreen that works, I'll try that Coppertone Sport. I'm going to the beach next month in the heat of the day where I will absolutely need sunscreen for the group run.

My next race should be 4th of July, the one mile. I've got to recover a bit. I'm still considering barefoot, but only if I can reach the same speed. I'm thinking I'll end up wearing shoes. But I'll do some barefoot training anyway because right now barefoot will be easier with the hurt foot. This week should be an easy training week.

myLot reputation of 97/100. sarahruthbeth22 (15807)  2 years ago

Ok. So you have a month and a few days to train and heal! Do you have the best shoes for running? If barefoot feels better then it maybe the shoes.

I'm sure I don't have the absolute best shoes out there, but I've tried several and so far I only really like the Nike Free shoes. I may try their new one if I start training more and these wear out.

should i stop runinning if i amhaving morning heel pain.. i think it is called plantia fasciates..

myLot reputation of 90/100. Pigglies (5141)   ranked 1 out of 75 in running  2 years ago

Just be careful on it. I know some people will still run with it, but you should definitely be putting heat on it and making sure you're only doing easy runs (no intervals or hill repeats).

great going :)
I'll be running my first 10K on June 26th. I'll just be happy to finish, though my goal time is 65 min's. That gives me slightly more than a 10min mile pace. That is my 5K pace so not sure how it will go on the 10K. I'll be happy if I finish in 75 min's.
I'm still wearing my nike frees though looking into kigo's mary janes. I'm also looking at getting a pair of sport sandals to run in. We'll see. My feet just get too dang hot!!

myLot reputation of 90/100. Pigglies (5141)   ranked 1 out of 75 in running  2 years ago

Eek! I am excited for you!

To give you an idea of comparison of 5K and 10K paces, the 1st 10K I did I was 40 seconds slower per mile (the 5K was one month before). And this 2nd 10K I did 50 seconds slower per mile, but the 10K course was way more hilly than the 5K I had done earlier in the month.

If you did your last 5K more than a month ago though, you may have improved enough to not have such a large gap.

Have you looked at huarches? Like barefoot Ted wears sometimes? Those are pretty open for the hot weather.

My feet used to get more hot than they do now, I think as I've gotten in better shape I sweat less.

Thanks!!

Yeah, I definitely enjoy good surprises. Today I surprised myself again, I'm still somewhat sore but I had to do a mile run test. Managed to bust out an 8:11 mile. My fastest mile yet. Painful, but I'm hopeful that if I can do that when sore, I can do a faster mile at the mile race.
