John decided to put a DVD on tonight and he chose The Green Mile...again!
What a great film though. Why anyone should be "into" the death penalty after watching that must have a heart of stone.
Mind you, this discussion isn't about that...it's about Mr Jingles. Why, oh, why should a mouse make me boo (cry) like a baby? Every time I watch the film the same thing happens. There are loads of scenes that make me boo though, the execution scene of John Coffey...when he said that he didn't want the black hood over his face because he's afraid of the dark...oh dear, that set me off!
Awesome film...one of the VERY best. Anyone else feel the same and do you boo when you find out at the end that Mr Jingles is ancient and can't play with the little barrel thingy anymore. Oh, I'll have to stop otherwise it will set me off again!
Stephen King is a GENIUS!

I've had to stop watching it as well although not because it gets to me. I think I watched it everyday for a couple of weeks and knew it so well that I knew the dialogue. So I had to stop before I actualy grew tired of it.

Yes, well, with us we'd not seen it for a long time so it was still fresh. I can understand why you don't watch it anymore as it's obviously been Green Mile overkill for you my friend.

i love this movie! i cried so hard i had a fever after crying. weird! i got goosebumps when i found out mr. jingles was still alive. the actors were all great, too! Doug Hutchison was such an effective actor, I hated the character he played. John Coffey was so pitiful, your heart woudl just go out to him. even the old Paul Edgcomb was good. there's no other movie like it!

You are quite right, it is unique. I don't think people would have the patience to sit through a long film like that anymore but that Benjamin Button was a long film, so maybe I'm being a bit harsh on the general public.

The Green Mile is one of my favorite movies! I can watch that movie as many times as it is one. I never get tired of it..lol..It is a masterpiece for sure. I have been wanting to read the book but I haven't had the time to sit down with it. I don't cry but when John Coffey saves that woman and she thanks him...I get chills.

Yes, that was an amazing moment, I agree. I only hope "Under the Dome" will be made into a film one day. I've read reviews about the book and many say it would make a good film...we shall see!

There are many good films that I would not like to watch again. One of these is The Green Mile. This film brings out the depths of human sadness in me. Just like reading Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird. There are situations in life that we have no control of, situations that do not happen everyday, situations that we do not know how we can allow to penetrate the deep recesses of our heart and our soul. These stories put me in lonely mood. And I don't want to feel the emotion, shrug off my shoulders because I can't do anything about it. I may become immune and callous. One time, I will view it again and renew my acquaintance with Mr. Jingles. That is because you just prodded me so, Janey.

One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest was mind and heart provoking, especially when it was shown in the 70's. The twist in the end was absolutely jaw-dropping. The film is not available on DVD here so I'd probably ask my daughter to download so I can watch it again.
They made memorable movies aside from Rocky and Superman in the 70's. Amongst my favorites were Reds, Heaven Can Wait, Deer Hunter, Dog Day Afternoon, Sunshine or was it My Fair Lady?

The Green Mile is quite uplifting in a strange kind of way even though there is a lot of sadness and anger in it. Also funny in parts which is so typical of Stephen King. The film is unusual in that it portrays a black guy favourably..you know, he isn't the bad guy in it for once..totally the opposite in fact. He just absorbs the badness from others with his "gifts."
I do recommend you watch the film again if you get the chance. Just so you can go "aww, look at Mr Jingles!" I defy you not to cry in the last half an hour, talk about tug at the heartstrings!
Another ace film is "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" starring Jack Nicholson and other actors before they became famous, Danny Devito amongst them. It is jaw-droppingly brilliant, believe me.

Oh yes!!! I love The Green Mile and can watch it over and over again! I don't get to watch full movies these days as my eyes are on my two little rascals, but whenever it happens to come on - I just have to catch a few scenes! Awww, Mr. Jingles . . . too cute or what? I love his "owner" Delacroix played by Michael Jeter . . . Michael Jeter is a great character actor and we love him as Mr. Noodle's brother on Sesame Street. Oh and the guy who plays John Coffey is so great . . . I feel for that character - you can feel his "pain". Each and every one of those characters are so well characterized . . . that darn Percy got exactly what was coming to him in the end!! I agree Stephen King is a genius!

Percy was quite comical in parts wasn't he? When he wet his pants with fright that was hilarious as it proved he wasn't so "hard" after all!
I agree, there was great acting all round. It is hard to pick out anyone really. I do know that the guy who played John Coffey isn't as tall as the character so the film-makers had to use boxes and the like to make him look huge, as he was supposed to be 6ft 8inches or something. His arms and hands were massive though. His one hand covered both of Tom Hanks's in the scene where he was transferring "stuff" he'd seen about those 2 little girls into him.
Mesmerising stuff. I loved the bit when he brought Mr Jingles back to life too and Percy couldn't understand why the mouse was still alive after treading on him.
Haha!

I agree, it is a genius film, what a great one! Stephen King is a great writer. I don't cry like you though, haha. Another great one of King's movies is "The Shawshank Redemption", love it!

Yes, yet another one that makes me boo lol. I wish there were more films like those. Maybe people don't have the patience to sit through them, I don't know.
Shame!

Haha, ya, they are pretty long, but that is because they have so much awesome in them; they can't condense all that awesomeness into a standard 1.5 hour movie.

it's such an amazing film. with so many different emotions.
and the little frazzlegreyhaired mouse really does give you the goosebumps.
it really is an amazing story.
I think Stephen King can be very hit and miss, but his hits just touch on so many different aspects of human life.
I never think of him as a horror writer, but a storyteller.
I've not got round to reading the book it was based on, but if the Green Mile is on TV, I can't not watch it.

I do know what you mean about Stephen King. One has to be patient to read some of his books. I bought my brother "Under the Dome" which is a massive book, well over 1000 pages. Next time I see him I'll ask him if it was any good as I have read good reviews about it. Dean R Koontz is another, similar writer to Mr King and my favourite of his books is "Watchers" about 2 dogs, one is a good, gifted dog and the other is an evil, destructive dog and it all kicks off at the end if memory serves me right!

Yes, it's a good movie, and very true to the book, but it doesn't make me cry. Guess I have a heart of stone.

Read the book, watched the movie, but it's been a long, long time. Time for another watch, I think...

To be honest, I've never read the book but I'd like to..one day. The Green Mile was once played on our coach of footy fans on our way to (I think) London and no-one talked through it, that's how good it was. You could hear a pin drop!
The film draws you in and 3 hours isn't too long, in fact it had to be 3 hours, otherwise the story would've become disjointed. One guy off the coach couldn't stop going on about the film afterwards and couldn't believe he'd never watched it before. Apparently, he wasn't normally a "fan" of Tom Hanks but he is now!

How do you rate Mr Jingles as an actor? I'd give him 10 out of 10!
