Indians are the most eco-friendly people

Friends just wanted to share this information, because I feel bit proud and happy. According to a 17-nation survey on consumers’ progress towards environmentally sustainable consumption patterns. India topped. Indians are the most eco-friendly people, says, Consumer Greendex, compiled by National Geographic which studied 17,000 consumers in 17 countries. The consumers were asked about energy use and conservation, transportation choices, food sources, the relative use of green products versus traditional products, attitudes towards the environment and sustainability and knowledge of environmental issues. The survey found the US the least eco-friendly in its consumption patterns. Consumers in emerging economies topped the Greendex ranking, while the six lowest scores were bagged by consumers in industrialized countries, according to the National Geographic. The rankings are Indians, Brazilians, Chinese, Mexicans, Argentineans, Russians, Hungarians, South Koreans, Swedes, Spanish, Australian, German, Japanese, British, French, Canadians and Americans. Compared to 2008, the largest increase in environmentally sustainable consumer behavior came from the Indians, Russians and Americans. In contrast, consumers in Germany, Spain, Sweden, France and South Korea have slipped slightly over the past year. While the US has the least sustainable behavior, it has made some progress in the past three years. The Americans'' average Greendex score has increased by 1.3 points each year. The National Geographic attributed much of the increase in the overall Greendex scores to more sustainable behavior in the housing category in both 2009 and 2010, which was measured by the energy and resources consumed by people’s homes. Brazilians, Indians, Mexicans and Chinese topped the housing category, while Germans, French, Canadians, British, Japanese and Americans were the last six. But the Americans, Hungarians, British and Australians also saw marked increases in their indices in this area, as consumers made moves to improve the energy efficiency of their homes. Most people surveyed cited costs as the reason for the decrease in consumption but between 20 and 50 per cent pointed out environmental concerns. In terms of personal choices like mode of transportation, there were mixed results with some countries indicating improvement and others deterioration. So where you stand in this ranking, to which country you belong, please share. Professor

hi Lakota you are so right, you were here first so you were already citizens. somehow this reminds me of the blurb the radio annuncer used to always give, KOTA the best darned station in the whole Sioux Nation. That was from Rapid City South Dakota the Sioux Indian reservation is not too far from there. I was born and raised on a South Dakota farm.

Yes, I saw the survey and find it to be very true. Indians have been eco friendly for quite some time and cities in India even after a lot of urbanization still are more eco-friendly than many other developed nations across the globe. I think a lot of this comes from our culture as well as we do revere some of the natural resources such as trees and forests from a religious aspect and that means that these remain intact at least for the time being. Cheers! Ram

I can't say I'm surprised about the American score. They've been beating it into our heads since I was a kid or probably even before that to take better care of the earth yet people are still throwing their filth every where.

Prof, nowhere is my country in the survey. But I know that there is a huge campaign about eliminating plastic from our daily use. Bike lanes and walking places are also being constructed so that people would use vehicles less. Tree planting and vegetation had popped up in private backyards and school gardens. Somehow, my country is being cooperative in being eco friendly. We should be in the survey. Hmmp!

Haha! At first I wondered why the discussion went to the topic of Filipinos being hospital, then I saw them apologized. Good! Haha! Eco-friendly means you are friendly to the environment or, environmental-friendly. Although being eco-friendly is often associated with being tourists-friendly, they don't have the same meaning. I think this is a good reminder for us Filipinos, that if we are going to maintain our being "one of the top tourist destinations of the world", we should maintain the cleanliness and orderliness of our surroundings.

Well written report Professor. It seems the survey did not include all the countries in this world. What will the result be, I wonder. Again, some surveys only interviewed a few people of the country, lucky if they interviewed the well educated people. Well, all in all, congratulation to the Indian people (I thought Indian people is the Indian, the native of American).

I am proud to say that I belong to India and feel happy about this survey. I belive that other contries who are behind in this contribution should come forward and contribute to this cause. Its bad that few developed contries are in the last 6, they should be leading as per their strong economy and stability. They are very quick to blame developing nations but not doing their part.
