Where did you learn?

I know that we all do different kinds of crafts, but I'm curious where you learned how to do what crafting you do. My two favorite craft projects are jewelry making and card making. Both of which I just kinda taught myself to do. Card making obviously isn't hard, just takes the use of my imagination :-) As for jewelry making I read a few books that helped me out as well as some Youtube videos. So where did you learn how to do your favorite crafts?

Hi Jenn, I learned to knit and crochet from two of my aunts when I was very young. One of them loved to knit baby outfits and the other loved to crochet afghans, etc. Embroidery, cross stitch and crewel embroidery I pretty much picked up on my own from books and magazines. I have also dabbled in bead work from classes I took about a year and a half ago. Quilting I learned from a very talented quilter in an adult evening class at a high school. I also learned oil painting at the same school. In addition, I took woodworking (made a small table) and calligraphy at those classes. I have gotten away from crafting lately because I am so busy with other things, but I'd love to get back to a lot of it.

most of the crafts and art i do i have taught myself but i do visit the library at least once a week and i get a plethora of craft books out of there, so some i have learned from these, others still i have learned back from school when i took art lessons.

The library really does have a great selection of craft books! That's where I get all of mine!

We lived on a ranch when I was young and the ranch owner's wife taught me to knit. She was from Germany and had learned to knit as a little girl. Mom taught me to embroider when I was very young and other things like needlepoint and sewing, I learned on my own. The internet makes things so much easier to learn now, though.

I found a magazine at my mom's while I was in college and learned to needlepoint from it. I picked up some small kits at a craft store and learned to cross stitch and went by a beading store and got some basic beadweaving from them, then learned other kinds from friends and kits

My favourite craft is knitting. My grandmother taught me when I was 7 years old. I still have my first little pink knitted rectangle. She just taught me the basics and I more or less taught myself the rest. I didn't learn to use double pointed needles until we were taught in school last year. I'm in college studying textile design. We learn different mediums such as weaving, quilting, embroidery, knitting, sewing and drawing. I prefer quilting, embroidery and knitting. I sort of self taught myself how to quilt but only the very very basics and had never tried embroidery before we learned it in school. I would love to make a huge crazy quit with tons of embroidery someday. It would take a very long time and would be more of a piece of art than a functional quilt I guess, but I could still put it on the bed. I'm going into my second and final year in school and am super excited to lean even more techniques to use.

My grandmother had a nursing home and the older ladies helped me to learn to knit and crochet. I loved it there and when i got stuck they were so patient with me.

I was raised by aunt, and she felt that kids should always be busy. She felt if they were busy they would not become a statistic. You know pregnant etc. Therefore, she made sure I was taught crocheting, basket weaving and embroidery. I think I was about 8 or 9 years old. I stop crafting for awhile when I became a teenager, but the craft bug hit me when I was in my 20's. I have been crafting ever since.

I'm pretty much self-taught. I have a few wire-wrapping books, but basically I used them to know which tools I needed to purchase. I taught myself my basic wrapping and have look at the books for ideas, but have never followed the designs...I guess I prefer the look I like and hope others do to. My mom tried to teach me to knit, but when I was younger, I was interested in drawing and painting, so I never became serious about knitting until after my Mom had passed away. A few of her pointers stuck with me, the rest is self-taught.

My favourite crafts are knitting, decoupage and card making. My mother tried to teach me to knit, but I was too young at that time, and I didn't learn it properly till I got handicraft lessons in school. My former mother-in-law was interested in decoupage and when I visited her she showed me some of the boxes that she had decorated. That inspired me to decorate my own boxes, and I found it fun to experiement with different kinds of decorations. I have taught myself to make cards. I started by making christmas cards to my friends. I enjoyed it and I decided to make other kinds of cards as well.

I had taken classes at JoAnn (it is a craft store in my town) and I had also gone to Michaels.com and other craft sites where they give you directions. I have learned a lot on my own. I will have to try checking out books on crafts. I learned how to paint on my own.

I love making rugs made from wool threads I got from the Craft Store and I learned making it from one of my college teacher's instruction as part of a school project. It is very easy to follow so no need for further instructions or walk through as long as you have the complete materials. As of the moment I no longer have time for crafts since I have kids to attend to and a work that keeps me busy all day long.

I mostly improvised or learned from family members (my Mom and sister are both great at crafts!), or friends who already knew how to do stuff.
