That John Lennon tragically passed away! 30 years ago today, December 8th, 1980, Mark Chapman shot dead John Lennon outside the Dakota building where he lived in New York City. This was after he had earlier gotten an autograph from him! John Lennon aside from being an extremely talented songwriter and musician was also a very motivated activist for the environment, human and animals rights and World Peace. He inspired many people to follow in his footsteps, so his legacy will live on forever. http://www.johnlennon.com/biography This is my favourite John Lennon song. He wrote it during his time with The Beatles about his mother who was also tragically killed. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYlhzfZLcjY If you are a fan of The Beatles, there is lots of great stuff here about the band. http://www.squidoo.com/fabfourbeatles He was controversial though, so I would like to know your thoughts on the man. Are you a fan of John Lennon? R.I.P John!

I am a fan of the Beatles. I also have a great respect for anyone as dedicated to their causes. I watched a show the other night where Yoko and his son were reunited with his ex and his other son at one of their music concerts. It seemd the boys are musicians as well. I think that one has veered off into art. I can;t remember what type of art it was though. Anyway it kinda followed the boys' life when they were little. There were alot of pic of Lennon with them...like teaching them to play guitar and stuff. Very interesting show...and the ladies were quite civil too...lol.

I had been thinking about this 30 year anniversary ever since the celebration of what would have been John Lennon's 70th birthday earlier this year. It has gone fast!

Too bad. Too sad. I love the Beatles, always have. However I'm not one of those fans that has all sorts of facts and information tucked inside my head. I wish I could retain info but alas, I have never learned how to train my brain to do so. There are so many memories when I play my records. Not just memories come back but my youth as well. What a great sound they had. Still have actually.

Hi Ms Tickle. I a have always loved them too, ever since I first heard them as a child. The songs that appealed to me then as a child longer appeal to me so much now though in adult years. My musical tastes have changed a lot over the years, but The Beatles seemed to have the range of music to suit those tastes. Whether I feel like a good old Rock n Roll song, a slow song full of emotion or a bluesy number, The Beatles have it. I am one of those fans who are able to retain lots of little details. I find it easy to remember things like that, but not what I have to do from day to day!

Time passes so fast. Didn't realize that he was gone for 30 years now. I grew up listening to most of the Beatles songs and some have become my all time favorite. Their songs remain evergreen and never seems to fade with time. Unfortunately there has never been any group that could match success in the musical world. Maybe they are but their songs can only remain for a number of years unlike the Beatles who have gone through the test of time.

I grew up through the 60s listening to Beatles music and whenever I hear them, my mind is taken back to my youth. I liked John a lot, and as a musician myself (keyboards) I appreciated his skills. His ideas were not that important to me when I was 16, but since then I have become a Zen practitioner and I can see that John was moved by spiritual matters and matters of enlightenment. _Derek

Hi Derek, they were a ground breaking band in many ways. Not just the stardom on a massive scale, but also the recording techniques that they pretty much invented which became industry standard for many years and even today. A lot of this was due to their producer, but they were all extremely creative. The whole band were quite spiritual for a while, but John and more so particularly George got heavily involved in spirituality. They were motivated big time by spiritual energies which flowed through into their music.

I was always a fan of Paul McCartney. Not so much a fan of John Lennon. He did lose the plot when he met Yoko. He was very selfish in breaking up The Beatles. And became nothing more than a hippie. I think John Lennon is overrated. I bought the John Lennon collection on 4 CDs some 15 years ago. While there is some good stuff on there, there is also a lot of crap. In my book, John Lennon was not as good as Paul McCartney.

As a child listening to The Beatles, I preferred Paul's songs, but as an adult I grew to like Johns stuff more. I also really like George's songs that he contributed more these days. They all had some great songs during The Beatles and after as well in their solo careers, but they did have some pretty crappy stuff in there as well. Paul had heaps of crappy songs as a solo artist and with Wings, but he also had some great ones. I think that John and Paul are pretty even when it comes to their talents. John did lose the plot there for a while, but they all did, even Ringo. Who can blame them for going a bit nutty living a crazy life like they did back then. I had The John Lennon Collection as a double album on record. That was good as it was his best songs. A 4 CD set would have a few fillers thrown in I reckon!

I had tears in my eyes and had a few moments of silence when they announced it on the radio last week, too. Then they played "Imagine", which was so appropriate. Look at we are in the world now...war, and more war and terrorism. I wish we had followed John's path. I agree with John's philosophy. "Give Peace a Chance"

Hi Annie. Yes it was emotional. They played a few of his songs back to back on a couple of radio stations here that I heard. There was something on TV too, but I missed that. The world is definitely no better off than it was when John wrote those great songs, so their words are still relevant today. I fear they will always be relevant.
