Writing to a Soldier

United States

So, I've started writing to a soldier and this week I will be sending my 6th or 7th letter. I'm suppose to write him every week so that he always gets mail. Well, I have no problem with that, except I haven't gotten a letter back yet, and it could still be weeks before I do! And I'm running out of things to say (it's hard to keep a conversation going when you're the only one writing!) lol So I'm just wondering if you guys have any ideas...because I'm all out. i've told him all about myself, my family, random stuff about myself, I've sent him a joke...I sent him our family christmas letter to give him something funny to read. I send him pictures with every letter....but my letters are getting shorter and shorter! The last one I sent was just 1 page (only the front) and I feel bad it's so short! So any ideas? Thanks!

This is a really random Idea that just popped into my head but you could send him some interesting blog posts that you come across. maybe only one or two paragraphs and only one or two a letter but ti is a space filler and if you tie it to him somehow it won't seem like impersonal filler.

That is a really interesting idea! I don't have to limit it to blogs, anything interesting/fun/etc I come across on the internet I could print out and send him, or like you said send him part of it. Thanks a lot for the help!!! :) I would have never thought of that!

Cool idea! I'm always running into really wacky local interest news stories on Mylots 'feature stories' section (news). You can check online for wacky or interesting news stories and that might give you something to talk about. It doesn't have to just be personal information like things going on in your life. The letters could be about anything really. I think the soldiers are just happy to know that someone back home cares enough to take time out of their day to put pen to paper. I'm sure they appreciate your genuine heart felt effort. I've been thinking of doing something similar but haven't known where to go to find a link to an organization that lets you write letters directly to soldiers.

You're right beauty! Probably doesn't care too much about what I write, just that I'm taking the time to do it :) And Mylot definitely does offer some interesting stories that I could talk about! lol If you want, I can send you a message with information on the program I'm using, it's the best one. It gives you the option to "adopt" 1 soldier, 2 soldiers, or a whole platoon! lol

I would say you should wait for his reply... It is a good thing to write to soldiers, but a conversation can't proceed if one of the parties is mute... Maybe, he is busy with something... so wait for his letter... :)

I must say you are doing a great job, sending letters to soldiers.. Write to him about how you spent your holidays this time... This will fill at least a couple of next letters... hows that???

I can't wait for a reply, I have to send him something every week--it's kind of a rule for the program, which I support. It's so they get something every week during mail call, so they don't get left out. But you're right, it's hard keeping this conversation going! :) Thanks!

Well, I was thinking of talking about the holidays, but then I feel a little guilty about it because he's away from his family, and probably isn't having great holidays like I am.

First let me say it's wonderful that you take the time to write a soldier. Have you tried talking about crafts or hobbies? Maybe encourage him to write you so you know more about him before you write again.

I did tell him a bit about my hobbies, asked him about his. I definitely tell him I hope to hear from him soon, but that's all I can really do. It'll be a while before I hear back from him, it not only takes 2 or 3 weeks to get a letter from me to him (and vice versa) but he's probably busy and doesn't have as much time as I do to write. Thanks! :)

Maggiepie has a friend in Arizona who writes her LONG letters. They always start weather report - generally HOT, sometimes rain - that's interesting... Then she talks about TV shows she watches and things that happen at her apartment complex and what activities they do - yawn... My guess is that your solder would be happy with what you do at your job, or at school, your friends, your critters, silly things. Heck, if you really get dry, come over here and talk about stories your mylot friends tell - he would probably be happy for any kind of normal life stuff he doesn't have over there.

any little thing can be turned into a fun or funny story just have to look at things around you - did you see someone dressed funny in a car? How about a car full of balloons? We could'a killed someone because they were out in the parking lot blowing their car horn, turned out to be a small child left in the car and dad came out and gave him "what for" of course it was in Spanish so I didn't understand what he said, but kids jumped back into the back seat really quick!

Yep, definitely going to tell him about our weather yesterday, it snowed! In arizona...wow lol. I could talk about my job when it starts again (I crosswalk at a school) but not a lot of stuff happens during it. But I could tell him about the kids I cross! I only have a few. Thanks elic!

I know this discussion a 3 weeks old & hopefully you have recieved a letter by now...as for ideas, have you told this soldier about the animal work you plan on doing & are doing? You could also tell him about the website you have set up for your sister too. You could even tell him what's going on in the news so he has an idea of what's going on back home too. I hope these little ideas help you.

It's good to hear that you have had an email from him...have you told him about the funny story you posted as a discussion here on mylot - the one about the speeding fine & the photo of money & handcuffs? he'd get a laugh out of that...

They told me where he's from when they sent me his mailing info. That's a good idea! I'll do that, thank you :)

Yeh, that's got to be kind of hard to do since you really don't know him. But, I guess I would start sort of a diary or journal type thing in the beginning of the week and write something everyday. I would definitely keep it upbeat and fun. Tell him about silly little things that happened to you, your hubby, kids, pets, anything of the sorts, even your neighbors. Don't forget, what you toss off as just one of those things, he probably would love to hear about. They are not picky, just lonely and love hearing from you, regardless of what it's about. Tell him about your Ebay experience and make a joke out of it...how you're trying so hard to sell this stuff, but everyone else's stuff is selling instead. I know they like to read books too, but what if you found a really, really good book..one a guy would like of course, haha (see I made a funny out of nothing, haha) and copy just a chapter at a time. Then you can send him the next chapter the following week, etc. This will keep him in suspense, lol! And, he'll really be looking forward to your letter. Go into your past and remember funny stories about things that happened to you, even when you were little. Anything funny and upbeat works good. That's about all I can think of for now. Oh, do you have any special events coming up that you're planning? That would be interesting too for him to read.

I wish I could write him about an awesome hubby, but I'm nto married lol. I did tell him about my family (pets included of course). With my first letter I sent him a questtionaire about what he likes/needs (foods, books, movies, etc) and I wanted to get him a bunch of stuff for Christmas...too late now! :( but I'm sure he'll be happy to get the stuff whenever! I just need to get his first letter with the questtionare back and I'll start shopping right away! it's amazing how excited I am about spending money on someone I don't know when I don't have a ton of money to spare, I guess that shows how much he deserves it huh? I didn't think about sending him funny past stories...I could tell him about the time I got sprayed by the skunk....that would be funny lol. Thank you for all the help!

I would think you should write about your daily life. Your un-eventful, boring (if it is boring) life. If I were a soldier, I think these would be the things I would like reading. Like going to the pump and getting gas, going to Wal-mart and seeing all the sale items, or going to McDonald and having a Big Mac, etc. Things which would seem to be boring, yet things that a soldier out in a foreign land, doing a dangerous job, would rather be doing.

Is this soldier you wrote to your pen pal or something like that? Do you know him in person? If he is your pen pal, you can write him anything, or even share your daily activities with him. Your plan for the New Year, and many more. So, don't be shy, be talkable to him. Maybe he would write you back his circumstance wherever he station at. Happy New Year!

Yeah he is a pen pal. I got partnered with him through a soldier pen pal program. My daily life is kind of boring, lol. Not really worth writing about. I know where he is, and I know a tiny bit of info about him through the program (can not share it though). It just takes about 2 or 3 weeks for my letters to reach him, same for his. Plus, I know he's busy...so it could be a while still until I get a letter from him. Thanks! :)

I used to write my cousin who was in the army without getting a letter back but i consistently wrote him since he needed to hear from me as i am his favorite cousin. It was kind of comfort to receive a letter from the outside. You could tell him things that are happening around you or the current events. You can talk about the weather since it changes all the time. You can talk about the news on the paper since it also changes every day. You can also consider him like your weekly journal telling him what you did for the week and some other things.

It actually snowed here (In ARIZONA) yesterday, so I was definitely going to include that in a letter! lol Will see what current events are going on here and where he's from. I'm not sure how well a journal format would work, my days are pretty boring! lol Thank you!:)
