BROTHERS IN ARMS by Dire Straits http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5JkHBC5lDs&feature=related What a beautiful haunting song. Appropriate for Memorial Day coming up I think. These mist covered mountains Are a home now for me But my home is the lowlands And always will be Some day you'll return to Your valleys and your farms And you'll no longer burn To be brothers in arms Through these fields of destruction Baptisms of fire I've witnessed your suffering As the battles raged higher And though we were hurt so bad In the fear and alarm You did not desert me My brothers in arms There's so many different worlds So many different suns And we have just one world But we live in different ones Now the sun's gone to hell And the moon's riding high Let me bid you farewell Every man has to die But it's written in the starlight And every line on your palm We're fools to make war On our brothers in arms This was the theme to Band of Brothers wasn't it? Metallica did a cover of it. What say you, good song?

Aye, a great song We're fools to make war On our brothers in arm War goes on till men refuse to fight Those that justify war, any war, must justify the motivation to it, and that runs contrary to scripture all the best urban

The world has achieved brilliance without wisdom, power without conscience. Ours is a world of nuclear giants and ethical infants. We know more about war that we know about peace, more about killing that we know about living. ~Omar Bradley

I've heard the title but never heard the song. If I had, I would not have unerstood most of the lyrics. So many bands play the music so loud that the words are inaudible or the singer doesn't enunciate well enough to be understood. Dire Straits didn't often have this problem but in this song he seems to be trying to underline the seriousness of it by vocalizing so softly that the words are overwhelmed. Or maybe I just hear wrong, I can't understand most of it enough to string it all together. Love Knopfler's licks, though, he's such a master. Regardless, what great lyrics!

If you can read the lyrics and hear the tune, it's a great song. Dire Straits and Mark Knoppfler are up there with the true greats. Possibly my favourite band of all time. They were playing this one on radio the other night - beautiful and totally contemporary in every way. I instantly thought about the conflict in Afghanistan. Superb.
