More About Bugs!

Okay, my last discussion on this topic was about disgusting bugs. Well, much as I hate mossies (mosquitoes), they don't really disgust me all that much. I just don't like getting bit.
But bit I have gotten! In fact, I feel like a mossie smorgasbord! In the past few days I have gotten at least a dozen or so mossie bites on my arms and two or three more on my legs! And you know they itch like crazy!
Last night I closed the window and put the cats out rather than let them come and go through the night. I didn't want anymore mossies in my house!
Still, I know there are remedies for the itch. Historically, I have just scratched them open to stop the itch but there are too many of them for that remedy this time. I have tried ammonia, which is the main ingredient in many of the store-bought bite remedies but it doesn't work. Alcohol has some small effect but not enough.
Do you have any suggestions for dealing with the itch of mossie bites? Don't you just hate them?

Hello friend, this is one discussion I would like to help out coming from a mosquito infested tropical country, again first things first, I hope you do not scratch it till it opens because you could expose yourself to secondary bacterial infection and being a borderline diabetic, I do not think this is a wise thing to do, I hope you are not also prone to scarring. Did you know that itch is one of the mildest form of pain? I read the other post about cortisone and that itch is actually our body reacting to the poison, yes they are right that's why reactions differ from person to person, cortisone is good for stopping itch instantly because it suppresses the immune system but you have to consult a doctor or dermatologist first since it's a steroid and it's not recommended for use in self medication.
I know that your main concern is the itch, but with mossies
prevention is better than cure, see to it that you do not have holes in your screens and no stagnant water like pails and barrels hanging around, also see to it that your gutters are clean from leaves and debris, you might also consider a mosquito net similar to what special forces are using when they are in the tropics that you can buy in a surplus military store, insect repellants, I also saw a cheap solar powered electronic mosquito repellant that you strap on to your belt on ebay, good luck my friend and I wish you the best

Poor alaskanray, it may sound crazy and first it hurts but dabbing the bite with vinegar also helps a lot. It will sure stop itching.

I've tried that before. I'll try it again, though...I don't remember if it worked for me last time. LOL...senior moment!

That's a new one on me, too. Thanks for the tip, elic...I'll have to see if I can lay my hands on some and try it out. Now, what can I use for a siphon?

hi alaskanray I take two benadryl tablets several times a day for
hives I get from things I am allergic to. I do not get mossies bites
fut if I did I would take
my benadryl as the itching is caused by our bodies allergies to the venom. this really does help the itching also calamine lotion may help. I use cortisone ointment on hives from allerfies and it really stops the itching.

Thanks. I was looking for something that I have on hand so I didn't have to spend any extra money. I have found several things that different ones have suggested though that I do have in my cupboards already.
I have tried calamine in the past and all it did for me was make me look like a pink polka-dotted elephant!
It may work for some but not for me. I think I will try the vinegar, since I have a whole gallon of it in my house! LOL
Then I'll take a dryer sheet out of the box and pin it onto my shirt. I'm tired of mossies holding their family picnics on me!

Hi Alaskanray
I'm lucky that mosquitoes don't like me. I don't think I taste good to mosses as you call them. You might try vinegar on your skin. You can buy those personal mosquito repellents. They look like a little fan. They say they work to shield against mosquitoes. You also might check your property for standing water. Just a little standing water can breed out millions of mosquitoes.

My home is in a trailer park next to a river. I come from rain country so I know all about the mossies' breeding habits and repellents but inside my home I don't usually want to wear such stuff. Unfortunately, I do taste good. Even fleas like me!
I just need something that will stop the itch now. Thanks.

I've heard that dryer sheets work good...you just pin one to your shirt and the smell repels the little demons.
There are things that will ease the itch, I know. I have used some before. My sister had one that really worked but I can't find it right now so I'm looking for home remedies. But thanks.

Try calamine lotion (the pink stuff you put on rashes). It helps soothe the itch a lot. If you're like me and you tend to swell up huge with them as well, take a few Benadryl allergy pills as per the directions on the bottle and it will relieve the itch as well as bring down the swelling. Hydrocortisone cream works well for small spots that itch, or even GoldBond anti-itch lotion.
Whatever you do, don't scratch! It can make them more painful and last longer, and in my case it tends to make them swell more too. Try to leave them alone and let them heal. If you start to have a bad reaction to a bite, don't hesitate to call your doctor.

Calamine never did a thing for me. Believe me, I have experience with it. I'll check out some of your other suggestions, though. Thanks.
