I was just wondering what American traditions and culture people on the left still respect? "Family" seems to have no meaning, or at least only the meaning people on the left want it it have. They have surrendered the US flag, Independence Day, and other celebrations of the United States of America to the right. If you see a person refusing to stand, or being otherwise disrespectful during the Star Spangled Banner at a public event, it is either a liberal or someone who thinks that kind of behavior is "being cool". The U.S. Constitution is almost wholly rejected by the left, quoted only when they are wielding it as a weapon against the Right. Almost never in support of what their point. Except, with the exception of the only part of the entire Constitution they seem to like.. the 1st Amendment.. and then only if it protects their point of view.
I sat in a class in college called "ethnic diversity". It was a required general credit. While I expected to learn about different cultures within the US, the teacher made it his business to teach us that there is no US culture at all. This, of course, is bunk, and completely prejudice. It was a complete antithesis of how the course catalog described the class
I know I have some liberal and left leaning friends out there. So I'll ask each of you, what parts of our culture do you like, what traditions do you respect?

Well lets see here. Family well thats a personal definition of what makes a family a family. I have had more than one family in my life. I don't think the Liberals have surrendered anything to the Right I mean maybe the Christian Morals that might be something that the Right decided to pick up on their own. Not sure though. As for the whole standing for the Star Spangled Banner I don't really care one way or the other I do it but really don't care one way or the other. The flag most people I know don't know how to be proper with the Flag to begin with.
The United States Constitution is rejected by both the Right and the Left I mean I think in 2008 Ron Paul was the only Right wing candidate that knew what the Constitution actually said everyone else on that stage had no idea what powers where or where not granted to the Executive Branch. The left was in the same boat except at least most of them seemed to under stand that the Patriot Act was in direct violation of the United States Constitution yet they where the ones who supported it. So there is enough Constitution hating coming from both sides.
I am sorry but the right seems to talk about liberty then they go and do something like try and force a view point down peoples throats. Which in most cases they say something that is against the Principles of this Republic. But I mean lets face it they didn't really read the Constitution anyway they just read the word that where on that page then quickly didn't think about it.
As for you time in the College Diversity class I can see where he or she was coming from the majority of United States culture is a mix of different cultures. Which in itself would create a culture that is derived from others. We are a great mixing pot so that is our culture we are the mix breed when it comes to culture. Like a good portion are Christian which comes from Jewish beliefs. But a majority of us believe in Karma that you will get what you give which is a very Eastern idea. That is in our culture and I haven't met someone who didn't believe in Karma. We also have a mix of celebrations in our society because of over the years we as a nation where first made up of British then Irish and Italians came over with the Germans so these cultures are in grained in us. That is why we have celebrations that involve many different cultures. The United States is like a mixing bowl of many different cultures that is why our motto is E Pluribus Unum " One from many that is our culture. We are United even though we are of many different believes and traditions we are one because of our liberty. Remember the several weeks and months following 9/11 we where one culture. Or Pearl Harbor our nation was alive and we United. As for what exactly is in US culture that would make it different I would say it is the fact that you can find influence of the many different Traditions from other parts of the world right here in our own backyard even if they are a mix of different things.
Then again this wasn't aimed at me as well I am a Libertarian Republican.

So, in other words, words have no meaning other than the meaning you want them to have.
Sorry, but the word "family" has a meaning. It has been bastardized and attacked from within and without to the point that "good friends" are family, and family is almost a negative.
That is just a lie. As in, not only not the truth, but against the truth.
My college diversity teacher was an anti US bigoted oaf, and so is anyone who LIES about the US having no culture.
You are right in that neither the left or the right can point fingers about the Patriot Act. Both have supported and opposed it at the wrong times.
But all that aside, I was simply asking the left to say something good about the US.. which you couldn't seem to do.
Sorry, but you can't claim to love the US if all you can do is trash it.
Ron Paul is NOT the only one that understands the Constitution, and has ZERO chance of winning the White House.

Sorry, but if words have no meaning, then there is no reason to take your word for anything.

lol, Well words are actually just sounds that we put to match a meaning.
Oh good things about the United States I didn't think that was the challenge if you want me to name just a few things that the United States can be proud of then I guess I can do that. I should state this as the People living within the United States.
so lets see here
1. The Creation of the Internet (One of our Military Projects)
2. Rapid growth of Industry
3. Turning the Tide of WWII
4. Being the Counter Balance to the USSR.
5. Kicking the British and the King out of the America / Inspiring other countries under the rule of European Powers to rebel.
6. Showing that a Free Market concept can work (even though currently that isn't what we have.
7. Has an ample supply of Dreamers and people to think outside of the Box. (Apollo 13 and the whole space program)
8. Allows for people to be disrespectful to the Government and to Protest against things that the Government is doing that they don't like.
9. Massive amount of Brain Storming and free flow of thought.
10. Has created a culture where Ideas are challenged and debated.
Do I need to say more?
Oh and as for the Ron Paul not being able to win the White House we will see. I guess I mean he hasn't changed his script like Obama or any of the other candidates. I mean in a poll done by time it places him ahead of Mitt Romney for the Nomination and that last CNN debate he won with like 67% over all the other candidates.
But this is all of topic anyway.

For a start, The Statue of Liberty and the words engraved on the plaque at its base.
The New Colossus
By Emma Lazarus, 1883
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

really dont know where and independent stands in your veiw.
BUt I love the 4th of JUly the pledge and am so glad that my grand daughters school says the whole pledge with god in there.
Family is every thing.
I like history and our heros of he past as we dont seem to have to many now.
But I heard that they are taking parts about the Alamo and davy Crocket and Sam Houston out of our history books thats just wrong.
WE have lots of different celibrations that is just American and I do beleive we should keep them up.
I hope you got another teacher that taught the class right!
