55-year-old Philip A. Contos of Parish, N.Y. was killed in an accident. He was on his Harley, in a protest ride against New York's helmet laws. http://news.yahoo.com/ny-motorcyclist-dies-ride-protesting-helmet-law-143217859.html

Now that's what I call irony. If that's not irony, I don't know what is. But it's weird that you just posted this because my brother just mentioned this story to me and I didn't have a chance to read the article yet. Very interesting.

His goal to get people to realize just how important an helmet is. RIght I mean he just realized that the best way to understand that you need a helmet is for him to martyr right? I mean this is really sad that he decided to try and prove a point and only to have murphy's famous law come up or maybe it was Karma.

Ironic indeed. He was protesting the government imposing too much control over our lives by mandating safety and instead, he reinforced their argument that they should impose regulations to protect us in spite of ourselves. I am a motorcyclists who believes in wearing a helmet, which I do whenever I venture out onto the roadways. I also happen to believe as this gentleman did, that I don't need the government to tell me what I should or shouldn't wear on my head. Everyone should be free to make their own decisions about their own safety. Unfortunately, too many people in government feel the need to control every aspect of our lives. I think we need more Libertarians in congress!

He wanted to be able to choose to risk his life...and he made that choice. Guess he got what he wanted, in a weird way. Most ironic thing I've heard in awhile.

Let me start by quoting Forest Gump, "stupid is as stupid does." There are helmet laws for a reason, and that's the reason. I remember when I was a kid and I used to ride my bike, we never wore helmets, but there is a big difference between a child on a bicycle and someone on a motorcycle.
