Overnight train or overnight bus

You can save a nights accommodation by going on an overnight train or an overnight bus. I know a train is the more comfortable option and the bus is just about tolerable option. On a train in my younger days I traveled in the sleeping bunks and there were six in the compartment. I always like to sleep on the top bunk because it gave me more room. With my disabled son when he was 13 months old I took him or an overnight bus from Vilnius to Tallinn. In a very loud voice in the middle of the night they announced Riga. We got two seats on the top deck right at the front. It was ever so funny traveling overnight on a ferry in a two bunk cabin with my friend. The bunk was swinging to and fro due to the waves. My favorite train journey was one day and one night in a seat. It was from Cairns to Brisbane in Australia. Would you choose a train, bus or ferry to sleep on in order to save on accommodation costs? Why would you choose that sort of transport? Have you ever experienced overnight trains, buses or ferries? If so how did you enjoy your trip?

I learned my lesson while travelling overnight on a train from New York to Texas. I woke up suddenly in the middle of the night. And I was VERY disorriented. It was so dark that all you could see was dark shadows. But, I had the sensation that, instead of travelling vertically, the train was climbing upwards at a very steep angle' and very fast. I got very scared because there was no way I could get out of that situation. Now I know. I travel during the day only and stay overnight at a hotel.

I think if I had to choose I would definitely go for train over bus as after a while I get a bit quesy on long car journeys if I am not the one driving! Plus some of the train systems in Europe are so much better than the uk anyway. Lol

Being older I could do a few nights on the train but would find the bus rather uncomfortable after the first night.

I have only limited experience of sleeping on transport...when travelling to and from the US,my usual destination having family there,I tend to get "redeye" flights back departing there around 6pm and arriving back early morning with the time differences..I can't seem to find sleep travelling that way! I remember as a kid sleeping in a cabin on an Irish channel ferry..wish I knew what route we took that time to do that, when the seacat ferries can now cross in about 2 hours! Must have been a slow ferry...My least favourite transport sleeping option would be on a bus...I went to the "Rock am Ring" weekend concert at the Nurburgring in Germany one time by coach, which included 1 nights accommodation...The pickup was in London,we ferried from Dover-Calais,then drove through the night to get to the gig next morning..the hotel that night was comfy, and the gig was fun....

Back when I was a kid, I remember my folks would take us on the "red eye" flights to New Jersey. I know it doesn't save money now, but it did then I've never been on that long a bus or train ride, its either a plane or the car

I have experienced all 3 options - overnight busses, trains and ferries. I think that an overnight ferry was the most comfortable way to spend the night. My ex-boyfriend and I travelled by ferry from Hanstholm in Denmark to Bergen in Norway. Our room was very small, but it was nice to have a private room and it was nice to enjoy the view from the ferry. There was a beautiful view once we got close to Norway and we took many pictures. We also enjoyed a nice dinner at the restaurant. When my husband and I went from Denmark to Thessaloniki in Greece we travelled from Denmark to Germany in an overnight train, the next day we travelled from Germany to Hungary during the day and caught an overnight from Hungary to Serbia. The next day we travelled from Serbia to Thessaloniki and we arrived in Thessaloniki late at night. The first overnight train (Denmark to Germany) was pretty comfortable and the other travellers in the compartment were friendly. I enjoyed talking to them in the morning before we left the train. The second overnight train (Hungary to Serbia) wasn't very comfortable. It was a very small compartment, it was hard to walk from the beds to the door because there were luggage everywhere and it was hard to sleep because the other travellers were very noisy. When we travelled from Vilnius in Lithuania to Hamborg in Germany we travelled on an overnight bus, that was the cheapest option, but it was also the most unforfortable option. We had to spend 30 hours in the bus, the seats weren't very comfortable and we didnt sleep much. We were really happy when we were able to leave the bus in Hamborg.

I honestly do not happened the night bus or a train anywhere But perhaps the best option is to choose or train or bus. train because you can sleep in the cabin and relax especially if the road is long. while the bus if you can still sleep in a sitting position but but it will arrive faster. success with your journey. nice day!
