Proverbial double standard- Make fun , pass teasing remarks but take exception

Make fun , pass teasing remarks but take exception when another person makes a counter teasing remark -- Gentle teasing, making light remarks in jest are all considered as marks of affection and friendship. I agree with this [though I am careful by and large and keep conversation free from this ]but why should some people take offence when a person who has received a teasing remark counters it with another teasing remark ? Hi Kala! You see many people when they tease others forget that it could hurt the other person, if s/he is not very sporting or if s/he is less sensitive. However, when they are countered either by equivalent teasing remarks or rebuttal, they feel restless. To defend themselves, they would say that they did it in a lighter vein and had no intention to hurt the other fellow. Back to your question - it is always very easy to pass a pinching or teasing remarks because it is for the other person to tolerate it. However, when such people receive a counter attack, they feel jittery due to lack of forbearance and patience. The person who is in the habit of teasing others should have enough patience to take back the teasing remarks from others. I normally won't tease others. If at all I would do it, I would to in a very light manner and jokingly so as not to hurt that person. If you could recall, I started somewhat a similar post regarding pulling up one's legs on mylot. Those who pull up others' legs, may not be so tolerant to receive the same treatment, in my view.

Ah yes DEEPAK! Now I too remember that and someone had also mentioned thta you have "pulleable" legs. People ca give but cannot take. THis is a double standard. If they cannot tolerate it they should not do it.That is my opinion because otherwise it becomes an unfair game.

There would be a select few (among those who tease others) who could tolerate counter-treatment.

Kala, I have noticed that most people have double standards ,different set of standards for them and their family and something else for others. Many people do not like it when any kind of direct comment or teasing remarks are made about them or their close family, but they expect others to take it in the "Right " spirit. My close relative is one such person , he is perpetually poking fun at others or cutting others to size ( according to him), but he cuts you off the moment you even make some harmless comment about him....talk about double standards !

THis was my observation too Kiran and that is why I started this topic. People can dish it out but cannot take it when someone else does it.

I burnt my fingers once as I used to see this user taking things in her stride when she was teased but when I did it hell broke loose and that is not a healthy trend at all. perga....Her I come!

Hiya kalav, Outside of this House I hardly ever in fact never now make any teasing remarks except when I am in Family as well. In Family they are quite over sensitive sometimes to teasing as well so most times I only tease with the closest I know like my Husband. If I tease him he does not take offence but I am careful how I tease and what about as well. But you are right People like to tease you but often they don´t like being teased back I have come across those situations a lot in life. Its very rare to find someone who can take the very mildest of teasing now not like before. I was always being teased when I was very small and I had to put up with it as I could not tease them back (grin). I used to be able to tease with the Friends I had in one Class they would tease me and I would tease them a bit too lol. But its very odd to come across someone with a great sense of humour.xxx

What you have written is very true lovingangel. people can give it but cannot take it; this is more so in these days. Genrally, I too observe that there is a greater defence nowadays.Like you, I also used to get teased a lot when I was young and could not give it back. But, after I became older , I could see the unfairness when I was still treated the same way [when we grow old, things are slightly different]. Now I too do not ease anyone and am quite careful. THanks a lot for the response.

Yes lovingangel! I used to take it as affection but when I grew old I realised it was a total lack of respect as a human being. For example, nowadays , youngsters do not appreciate any teasig from their aunts or uncles. In our days it was different.I used to take it in my stride and have a lot of selfdeprecating humour too but when this is misconstrued as idiocy, it hits you.A resepctable distance does not lessen affection but keeps our respect intact. Now I am middleaged and have no problems.

Hiya kalav, Oh you got teased a lot too? Well I know how you feel. I was teased because I was very quiet, very small and weighed like a feather almost but I did have a great sense of humour I still do. However like you I am very careful who I tease now even though I can take being teased and People pulling my leg I don´t do it back to them unless I know them very very well. Hope they don´t tease you now like they did. That´s okay I think we have to laugh more at things that are far too serious now.xxx

One needs to walk on egg shells even here as something said in jest is taken seriously. It depends who says it though. I have seen heavy teasing but it is all taken in its stride depending on whose contribution it is. I have also observed another tendency which is there will be a chain of teasing and suddenly out of nowhere one decides to take it seriously and you know what follows.

I totally agree with you allknowing! It is better to be safe than sorry ; one never knows where limits are crossed and it is better to maintain a respectable distance in familiarity to; I have seen this with my own kith and kin.

oh i never pass on teasing remarks in my real life as i can't take that easily on me.i don't love a lot of teasing.though a bit and once in a while is agreeable but more then this,is unbearable for me.while if you consider my presence in mylot, most often i am in a mood to tease my friends around here.this indeed shows a level of comfort and affection with each other.

It is better to be safe than sorry and I feel even without teasing affection can be shown; however, a little gentle teasing among good friends where we are sure no misunderstandings would arise is ok. But I have good friends with whom I have very intimate chats but no teasing.

I am a little different from most people in this regard. I do not like teasing remarks, PERIOD. I made one the other day, though. A man was going on and on about how he didn't like it when women did this and that and the other thing, so I said, "Well I can see why you are a single man!" Ooooh, he did not like that, but it was true. Any man can find a good woman if he is half decent.

Sorry drannh for the late comment. THta man must have really put your back up provking you to make a remark like that.It is better not to go in for teasing if it is likely to cross limits.

Lol, kalav, well, I do not like it when people tease and then get offended if you tease back, especially if it is a guy teasing a woman. What is good for the goose is good for the gander is a saying we have here, meaning what goes for women goes the same for men and vv.
