Ever since I was a kid I used to walk, take the bus or the train to get to school and then work. When I moved to America at age 19 I bought my first car a blue Mercury Comet, I think I drove it twice around the neighborhood and my ex drove it everywhere else we went. I never felt comfortable driving and I really like walking so that's what I've been doing for the most part of my Life. The only time I miss having a car is when it's time for vacation and I'm stuck here unless I want to fly or take the greyhound Bus. I live close to work so I take the bus and I have all the shopping stores close to my house too so I can walk there within 5 minutes. Would you be lost without your car?

I've got a 45 minute drive to work & a 20 minute drive to town. I'd be completely screwed without a vehicle of some form.

Personally yes, I think I would be lost with my vehicle. Where I leave I have a long commute to work as well as my husband and then I also have to take my kids to school and it is also a bit far from my work. So I don't think I could leave without my car. Luckily that at least me and my hubby work for the same department meaning that we don't have to take two cars we get to share the car and save a bit on gas.

That's great, my mom and her boyfriend worked at the same place for 30 years together and always rode to work together too.

I would be absolutely lost without my car. It's my independence and has been since I first learned to drive. As most who interact with me know, I live miles from anywhere and a car is vital in order to shop for food, visit the doctor, visit family and so on...it's my link to the rest of the world. Also, I work as a volunteer driver...need a car for that. When I was young I would walk everywhere like you and I still enjoy walking, it's just a bit difficult sometimes these days.

You got good reasons to be needing a car.

I might be able to cope wothout a car for a while, but long term,I'm not sure! I do have a bike which I'd prefer to use in dry weather, but rainfall is kinda unpredictable around here...especially with winter arriving..warm and dry in the car has advantages over cold and wet on a bike...although there's a quote I like that says there's no such thing as bad weather, just poor choices of clothing!

It's all uphill from where you Live? You could look into E-bikes..basically a regular bike fitted with an electric hub motor, run off a battery pack brick you can charge like a cellphone on or off the bike..very useful in your situation..they're not electric motorbikes, legally they're still considered a regular bike,as they have limiters that keeps their assisted speed around 15mph,so you do have to pedal and will get exercise out of it! Power output is such they're not rated as an electric scooter..there's a hilly scenic driving route near where I live, which I used to test mine out...it has 20" wheels and will fold into the back of my (Small) car..I got to the top of the hill ahead of 2 mountain bikers that were way ahead of me at the bottom!

I keep thinking about getting a bike and riding to work but then once I look at the steep hill I don't know if I could make it. It would be a breeze going home though.

When I was younger I lived in the city and I did alot of walking or taking the bus to school or shopping. When I was 16 I got my drivers license. It came in handy to get to work, etc. When I got married we lived in the country and we definitely needed a car to get to and from town. With the economy the way it is, we had to take the insurance off of my car, so it just sits in the driveway. I definitely miss being able to just hop in the car and go to town or just go for a ride. I guess it is time to start at least taking walks (but, it is still to far to walk to town). You can always rent a car to go on vacation.

That's another thing....I couldn't afford insurance,gas and maintenance.

I hear you on the not being able to afford the insurance, gas and maintenance. That is why we took the insurance off of my car, plus we did not renew the license either. Gas right now for 2 vehicles is running us over $200 a month. If we didn't have a charge card, we wouldn't be able to even buy gas. At least we can charge it as we need it and pay for it at the end of the month. Needless to say we have to go without other things just to be able to afford to drive back and forth to town. The second vehicle is a truck, and that is needed to gather wood pallets from businesses that want to get rid of them, we use them to heat the house.

dear missybear, I dont have a drivers license and yes in my new hometown I would be lost without my husband who has car and drivers license. we dont live close to the supermarkets so no way we could walk there to shop. He does the grocery shopping twice a week, we only buy what we really need and dont stock up so much any more.

I'm fortunate to live right across from the grocery store and in Vegas there is a store just about every block

At this point, only when I want to take stuff to recycle and reuse center or go out of town. I can walk to most of the places I need to go, if I will do so.

I live in the country and so I would certainly be lost without a car. There are not any bus lines near us and it is about 20 miles to the store so it would be hard to ever go to the store. Also, I think that I have become very dependent on the car and the freedom of coming and going as I please.

Good for you, if you want to drive you need a license and even if you don't have a car yet you can still get your license

Oh yes...I would be in big trouble without a car. I live in an area with no public transport and everything is a bit spread out. I live fairly close to stores but my job is a 15 minute drive. That's not much but it would be if I were walking it

I don't think I would be lost without a car as I have taken public transportation numerous times. I think I just would be inconvenienced but would adapt quite easily. I might miss it every now and again but not afraid to walk and or take the bus. Now if I was working, like I use to it would be a great loss as the ride to and from driving was 1 1/2 hours.

I do miss it when I want to go to the lake cause you can only get there by car so I can only go when 1 of my friends with a car wants to go

Not really :) I don't own a car but will occasionally drive my dad's but I prefer the bus or train anyday. The traffic here is so nasty it will take hours and looking for a parking space is crazy at times. So i think bus and trains are more convenient and cheap. The bus station and train station are just a few minutes away from where i live too.

I guess I'd be lost without one. My home is far from the malls, stores, church and all other places so I'd really need a car to go there. Well, there are cabs available but then, it's always easier to ride in a car.

Oh my gosh, would I ever! I live out in the country and need a car to get anywhere...including the grocery store. The closest is probably 10 miles away so I certain couldn't walk it...especially not with my kids and a cart load of groceries. It'd take hours just to get there and back...if we were to survive the trip, that is. I know as I've walked several miles before. Of course, that was before I had kids and I didn't have any groceries to carry! Unfortunately, public transportation isn't close enough either. It's closer than the store, but it would still be one hell of a walk! So, yep, I'd definitely would be lost without my car. Happy mylotting!

We had a schoo bus for out school but there were times where me and my friends and some of my cousins prefer to walk. There was a short cut to our house so we rarely walk on the main road. We would walk through the strawberry farm (if it is in season. I don';t know how to drive, I just turned 21. I want to but my dad wont allow to. He says it's too dangerous.

hello, I never had a car. Well, my parents have it when I was a kid but since the oil get increase they decided to sell it out. But now I realized how important having a car with you especially if you are working far from home and you need to commute just to get home. It is really hard. So, when I earn a lot I will buy a car well, not brand new or luxury but even a second hand will do because the most important is I have my own car.
