The trip to the super: it can mean a lot of extra money.

Many people go to the super several times in a month. They forget this or that (oh, how I love the lists I make now that my memory is not what it was before!). While at the super, they grab this or that, sometimes because it´s an offer, sometimes because it´s there.
But the worst thing about those several comings and goings is the gas we spend to get to the super. That´s why I go only once a month and if I need a little something, I think if it´s wiser to do without it or to walk to a minimarket around the corner.
I don´t make a weekly menu, but have a bit of everything so that I can eat what I want when I want it. I´m eating a lot less meat (expensive); more legumes (I soak them instead of buying cans)and eggs made in different ways. Gas has to last. And so, if I don´t have rice, then it´s pasta or potatoes.
How do you do it, friends? Do you think of the gas you use when going to the super for a last minute lettuce? Money ads up. I quit smoking when I discovered that the money I smoked could take me to far away places each year. This is the same. Let us save energy, not only for the planet´s sake, but for our own.

I do my shopping twice a month and it certainly save me quite a bit of money I usually plan my meals and something extra just in case I get unexpected visitors...which happens quite often I Am lucky to have a mayor super market just around the corner so if I happen to need fresh vegies or fruit I can always go there and the prices are good. I try to save on car fuel so I go out once or twice a week the rest of the time I just walk it gives me a good excuse to exercise!

I should do as you do, friend. I should walk to my super more as I´m living a too sedentary life.
I blame it on my lack of energy, but I guess it´s just that I´m lazy.
I have a small pantry and with that and my fridge I get along perfectly well, even with visitors.

What a lovely compliment, marguicha...one that put a huge sparkle in my day
!
Are you kidding me...a Kidney for an i-pad! My Lord, what is this world coming to? In the shortest amount of time, the "i-pad" will be obsolete! This has me shaken...if one is to give up a kidney---why NOT save a life! Body parts for "technology?" Unbelievable! Phew! Am aghast...as I think about all the dear people, so challenged with missing body parts..WOW!
The downside of having to shop like this, is that I have to have a lot of inventory, which means a lot of money tied up! But, when prices are going up, in leaps and bounds..it also means a lot of money I have saved..too!
Has the E-bike made any impact in your area, Marguicha? I was the first on this Island, sang the praises...and now there is nearing 20, still a small amount of the population...about 1000! But that's 20 polluting vehicles OFF the roads!
Hope your weather is complying and you are enjoying the new growth of your gardens,...I am so envious! HUGE HUGZ!@marguicha (230350)

I loved your post, pergammano. I felt in the middle of one of the most loved books of my childhood.
. I agree with you about mankind also, not as a whole, but unfortunatly about the ones who have the power. The rest of us are pawns and many people are kept in ignorance so that they rule them easier. I read yesterday a post here about a teen in China who had "changed" one of his kidneys for an i-pad. That is sick! But it´s not only a person+s illness: it´s society´s.

I live in a big city, with millions of inhabitants, so bikes are mostly for weekends. We have a reasonable public tranportation (could be better) with a Metro underground tha is getting bigger all the time.
My super (a big one) is a few blocks away from my home. If I weren´t so lazy (now I´m blaming it on the chemo but it´s not true) I´d walk everyday and never use my car to get there. As it is, I shop once a month for the food with more weight and go walking once a week or so to buy cheese, bread and the like.
I checked your Galiano after I read you last post and you live in PARADISE!!!

We live a mile or so from a major grocery store so the gas isn't really an issue.
We shop at Sams Club which is a warehouse store with large quantity items as opposed to small sized items so we have a pantry we stock quite often. We make it to the regular store weekly at least as there's always something I crave. HAHAHA!

I know about lists, Bob!
I make them so I won´t forget and leave them at the dining room table. I am being less forgetfull now, because of my chemo diet. I cannot eat a lot of things but refuse to eat as if I were at the hospital. So I have to think up what to get that´s yummy AND accepted.

We try to go to the store less as well. One big trip in the beginning of the month and two weeks later we do a perishable trip if needed. We try to get our milk, fruits and vegis from a local food co-op so that we dont go into the store. Anytime I can stay out of the store I know that we have saved money. Even if it was just a pack of gum thats one more dollar I can put towards paying off my house or cars. Im trying to count every penny. We use what we have or do with out it.

Hi Jo,
I´m SO glad to see you here again. I am trying to by possitive (nothing else I can do, in fact) and follow orders. Mylot and the friends here have been a lot of help. We´ll see what happens to the future when it comes. Meanwhile, I´m living the present.

Here at home we shop once or twice a month and do take inventory of what we need. We try to make sure we get what we need on the list and since my boyfriend is conscious about lists he always assures we have one. I use to go on my own when I lived alone and forget it, I use to forget the list at home.
But yes that is how we plan our shopping trips and do try to take note of unnecessary extra trips. The gas is not cheap so we make the best out of each trip.

I do that too, but although I am perfectly concious of the need of a list, sometimes I leave in on the table
. Anyway, even then, as I have written it, I remember most of what I need. I´m trying to do it better now, specially since I have a part time helper since I´m on chemo. As expenses are a lot more I have to be extra careful with my budget management. Gas has gone down on super trips though, because Leticia insists that we walk ( it´s good for me) and we make more walking trips than I did when I was alone.

For the most part, we do do a lot of our major shopping once a month, and try to plan out things that we would like to Eat for the month. It would be nice if this was the only time that we had to go. When we have to go other times we will try and pick up the other things we are needing so it is maybe only a once a week think as well, as the Gas does add up and it seems like you buy things you might not buy otherwise as well.

My super is near my home so I just get the caar once a month to get all the heavy stuff. But I can walk there for some bread or any small things that I need. I think that I do that once a week too.

yes, it means savings. and any savings can help extend the value of hard-earned money. i think the trip to super is worth it if, as you said, the amount of gas used will be lesser than the savings. well, going out and away somehow provides additional relief from stress. a drive outside of the usual may shift the focus and provide fresh and alternative outlook in life.

I prefer to have an outing to some nice place than to go to the super for fun. That´s why I go once a month even if it´s not so far. I go to the farmer´s market at the same time. My vegetable plot provides for the rest of the veggies.

I live in walking distance of three supermarkets so if I run out of something small, I can just walk there if I feel like it. Most of the time when I go shopping in the car it is because I am already out and it is on the way. If I need to buy big things then I do go by car even if I only need one or two things since I can't carry much. Since I volunteer at the Red Cross many days a week, I just go to the store that is two blocks from there, sometimes after going to the gym that is right across the street from it. Those are all about five miles from home, but since I am in the area anyway, why not? I do try to keep a variety of food in the house, but I am just in the beginning stage of stocking up and haven't figured out how to do the beans and other staples yet. Fortunately, I never got into smoking so I never had that particular expense. Have a great weekend!!!

I can´t carry much either now, Deb. I have to have the catheter for some time (about 2 years). But it´s lucky that I have supermarkets nearby. If you need help with recipes for any kind of food, just ask me PM. I love to cook.

The "list" bit is a great help, even when I leave it on the table
. I don´t go so often as I have a small pantry and place the rest inthe fridge and the freezer. I buy fresh products when they are on season and freeze some (not many as my freezer is not very big). But for instance, now I just froze about 2 kilos of fava beans. They cost next to nothing now but later on, if I have guests, I can show off with a delicacy

I live in the center of a town and I have two small supermarkets at two streets from my house. They are a little more expensive than if I was taking my car and going outside town in discount supermarkets to buy my groceries, but like you said, gas is not free, and I have no problem for a last minute lettuce or a bottle of salad oil -- one of them is opened until 9 pm

I´m happy to have a big super at walking distance from home. But still, once a month, I have to go with the car as there is too much weight to carry. The super is open until 11PM, a lot later that the time I´d go out. I also have other small markets nearby, but usually the prices are higher.
Take care!

I'm lucky to live in a subdivision that is very near SM ( the number one mall in the Philippines) so going to the grocery is not really an issue, the wet market is just walking distance so we always have a choice, grocery or wet market. 7-11 is also very near and there is also a store that is open 24 hrs just near my house so I can buy anything I like to consume while Mylotting
, I thank God for all the blessings and the food.

When I became a widow and the house economy schrunk, I make a list on Excel of all the items I used at home. With that in my hand I would check pantry, fridge and freezer. I check that list once in a while now, and I only buy some items on occations now.

First of all I would restrain myself from going to the super often. The gas issue later but the super issue first. The whole idea of the guys who create them is to entice people visiting them to indulge in indiscriminate, unplanned & impulsive buying. Its good for the affluent but for the modest budget families, its not on. The whole ambiance is flattering because you get to lay your sights & hands on almost everything, feel them look them over and do let yourself free on the items displayed. Even when I go there with a list, I have been tempted to pick up things impulsively. I would rather go to a mini store with my specific requirements and do a disciplined shopping.
In my previous work, I used to walk to a store post lunch and pick up daily essential needs and leave the bag with the lift man to pick it up home while leaving for home in the evening. The rest, if I had forgotten any, would be for another short walk with spouse in the evening. So, the gas literally was bare minimum. Its such a wonderful thought to save as much gas as possible. My company used to car pool about three of us, which again was another contribution to the green cause we could be proud of.

In my country there´s a great difference in prices between a big super and a minimarket. But fortunatly I have learned to stick to my list as it´s the only way that my budget holds. I like to live well and the only way to do it is to be on a budget. Imagination and love for cooking and saving do the rest

For me, it is not about saving the planet earth. It is just a matter of using things at the right time at the right place for the right purpose.
If I need something that is far away, I will go that far away to get it. I may store up something but storage itself isn't exactly free of charge. For example, putting stuff in the freezer cost electricity and not to mention the extra space needed.

I have the freezer on all the time so using it in full capacity is not a problem. It doesn´t cost more electricity. I don´t have a big freezer, just one over the fridge. It is more than enough for my needs, including using it to freeze some of the veggies I grow.

Well, with our family, I have to go to the supermarket once a week because that is how our budget allows us to do grocery shopping and I will shop with a list so that I don't forget things that I'm going to need. However, there are the times that I will forget something that I needed to make a meal. In those situations, there is a smaller grocery store a few blocks away from our house and if the weather will permit it, the kids and I will take a walk over there to get the things that have been forgotten.

aww, that is nice, Ma'am. well, several years ago I wouldnt bother think of gas reduction, saving energy and so on. yup, too reckless and ignorant. I would just grab my motorcyle to go to nearest market (4 minutes on foot) just to buy matches just because I didnt like the one I had had at home.
now, I prefer walking to riding my motorcycle to go to places especially if it is not for the sake of work (my workplace is 1,5 + hours by public transportation). I try to reduce the usage of my motorcycle since it consumes gasoline (Which in this year, the price will increase again. it has increased 4 times in recent 6 years. there is a traditional market that I can go when I need things, not too far, I do my shopping daily, so it also will be my exercise. oh and since I made it, reducing my motorcycle usage, I can alocate the gas-expenses to buy other things I need. :)

It seems everywhere in the world we have become aware of the need to spend less in energy of the kind we normally use. I use gas for my range and water heater but I used to leave a smal pilot light on all day and night. Nor anymore. And it saves a lot of gas.
