Hello Lotters, In the Philippines, we have this culture every November first about Visiting the tomb of our departed love ones. depends how long you stay there, some not long, others takes a day, some even sleep there probably because they live in far away places. As for me, I stay about a day. I went around 9 in the morning, left around 3 in the afternoon. my elder brothers wifes and kids couldn't stay longer because it was too hot. not to mention the tent was just borrowed. I was kinda annoyed because my mom bought a 40$ tent which can stretch as big as my room but we never got a chance to use it. Anyways, am kinda tired because i didn't have extra tshirt and sweat a lot to the point of getting a flu. but i got towels though. Am sure most people are tricking or treating on other places but we prefer to visit the dead ones. Hows you're November 1st?

Hi friend, we already went to the Memorial park Oct.30 to beat the rush, it was a solemn occasion but fun as well especially for the kids ( the cemetery was like a park to them) and was like some kind of reunion with my siblings family, a little expensive though but worth it because almost all the popular food chain brands had a booth inside the cemetery. We also bought " lechon manok" (marinated chicken made to turn in a spit and cooked in hot charcoal) that we brought home and ate with my family for dinner

Hello Louievill, Well it was like a good place to walk to. I remember when i visit my grandpa's grave not in November, I saw a lot of people there who jugs around every single day. though, it's not a bad thing my mom just bought a lunch pack for me, they got some food from a family friend who also have a grave there for them to visit to. have a nice day.

yes my friend. MMP looks like a park cemetery (even has an aviary), one thing I like with it is it is safe to visit even when it's not all souls day (where there are few people) because they have a roving security guard and no informal settlers within the premises, I like pack lunches especially when it's made by mom or wife cause it's home cooking, just not very practical to bring along at times, yes have a nice day

I have written about various cultures and their Nov 1 traditions but here in Canada Nov 1 is a day like any other. We don't acknowledge it as a special day.

Hello winterose, Oh, that's alright. Maybe I should research on Canada and look if there is such familiar traditions with regards to the dearly departed ones. we do have similar tradition with the mexicans i think. have a nice day.

I was down with the flu on November 1. But even if I was well, I wouldn't be going to the cemetery. It's like a circus every time and I understand that this has become tradition, but I cannot see the real meaning behind All Saints and All Souls day when you have people partying, picknicking and every hawker and vendor abound. When my mom was alive, we would go before or after November 1st to visit my grandmother's grave. By that time, there are less or almost no people. I plan to visit the grave this Saturday. My cousin who usually took care of the painting of her grave each year has already moved to the US and I need to check if I need to get it repainted or cleaned. If I were to follow this tradition, I would need to make a trip from North of Manila to down South since the mausoleum of my grandma from my father's side is in the Chinese Cemetery in La Loma, grandma is in the South Cemetery and my Dad is in Manila Memorial in Sucat. I am thankful I have not been one to stick with traditions!

Hello ann25peen, Indeed such tradition turned circus because of the tents, noise, different food kiosk of any kind. I think the essence of it is when we get to visit the place is to pray soley and silently to our love one. This time i didn't do the painting thing bcause we thought a friend of my moms friend would do something about it but didn't happen. have a nice day.

Hi Letran Knight: Here in my country we have this same cultural tradition, though we are not that strict. People usually go and visit the cemetery for a short period of time to pray and then they return home . In my case, I have to say that I was working so I didn't go this time because I had to be in my office for the whole day. ALVARO

Hello starsailover, That's the real essence of going to the cemetery and not treating it like a picnic session with a family. usually i would go there with only bottled water in my bag.. well, it's nice to know that it isn't mandatory for you people there. but in here it turned into a fiesta of some sort

Hello Chiyosan, Cemeteries that are long standing and Public ones are usually over crowded. It was the hottest day i had and I thought I was going to get sick because i couldn't stop sweating due to the intense heat and the change of weather. anyways, it was a real experience. have a nice day.

I am fortunate enough to live within 30 miles of the cemetery where most of my loved ones' bodies are interred. I visit there a few times a year and leave flowers. I know they are not there, only their shells which they left behind. But still, it's a place to go when I feel a need to connect to them in a physical way. I connect with them emotionally and spiritually all the time and they visit me in dreams, I can catch a whiff of their scent sometimes and every so often I can feel their presence. But the cemetery is where their past physical connection to earth is centered for me and I enjoy spending a few minutes there. You have a nice custom but it must get crowded if everyone goes on one day!

Hello Dragon54u, If I had less stuff to bring, I could have walked it out instead.but since i need to bring some stuff because it's like doing picnic to the cemetery. because we are going to stay there as a tradition of remembering our dear departed love ones. yes, it gets crowded but nothing compare to the public cemeteries. have a nie day.

That is a nice custom; to set aside a day every year for a trip to see your departed loved ones! I think it’s a lovely thing to do! A lot of us never bother going and keep putting it off! We had the Melbourne Cup here is Australia yesterday; it is the biggest horse race in the country and it’s held on the first Tuesday of November each year. I don’t gamble and do not live in Melbourne so I didn’t make any bets or have a day off for that matter but I enjoyed listening to the race and watching the festivities on T.V.

Hello Paula, To be honest, I don't go much any more than I used to. for now am happy that i was able to participate in this event. nice of you to have watch the race hope the odds went favorable to your betting, if you did bet on one. the trip was kinda tiring because of the SUN. well, have a great day to you.

hello LK, it is filipino family tradition to visit the grave of loved ones during all souls day and all saints day. i went as early as yesterday because i know the cemetery will be jam packed today. then i went home after offering flowers and prayers. it rained yesterday hence i have this little runny nose today. so i will go sleep early and also because tomorrow is start of another office day. ann

Hello tigeraunt, Yes, you're right it's a Filipino tradition every single year. but unfortunately some people are using it to just date or simply to walk around the cemetery but the advantage of this is family reunion and it was good for my family too. besides, it's nice to visit dearly departed love one. it's just once in a year.

Hello ardoy, Luckily we aren't that much crowded compare to other places like the public cemetery. as long as we had the tent, we can tolerate the rain except if it's a typhoon with strong winds. i think a lot of people have work because of it. anyways, am doing my best to make sure that we get the chance to enjoy that day

Haha that's 1700 pesos down the drain! Anyway, we also went to the cemetery a while ago but we did not stay long. We just prayed for the souls of my grandmother and grandfather and offered them candles and flowers. When I was young, I used to love it when we visit the cemetery. Aside from the mini reunion it brings, I also love to play with the candles. My cousins and I make balls out of candle wax. The one who made the biggest will be the first to use the computer when we get home. I'm sure you are familiar with this. A lot of children are doing this at cemeteries to relieve boredom. Take a rest and have a good night sleep. :)

Hello LaraTecson, It's actually 50$ when they told me the price and it was obvious it was really bad because it's really Huge and i couldn't do it on my own because there are some people out there who have installed tents already. yeah, it also provides and opportunity for a family reunion. have a nice day.
