Do you think growing older means you should get your hair cut if you are a female? My mother was of the generation where when a woman got older, her hair was cut short - permed, coiffed, the whole deal. I've had long hair for decades and now am in my midfifties. There's a few strands of grey here and there but most of my hair is still brownish red and I like french braiding it and wearing it in a ponytail. I've seen women younger than me who have all grey hair and it's long, and women older than me with long hair. What do you think?

Dear timetravel, I only had long hair once in my teen days. My mother insisted on me having my hair cut short and as I disliked and still dislike dresses and skirts and am a jeans and t shirt person, it lead to comments on the bus like:"Son would you mind stepping aside please?"
I hate short hair and let it grow when I was an adult. I had it permed and liked that very much and now I just let it grow a little more and will maybe get a perm again. I am nearing 50 and no way I will ever have my hair cut short.
Only exception would be if I had trouble in old age washing the hair myself without assistance, but as long as I can do it why should I have a short hair cut I hate?
I think its everyones personal decision how to wear her hair. My hair is getting a bit grey too, its a silvery grey and up to now I didnt have the feeling I should get colour in to hide the grey.

thanks dear timetravel, I have very thin and fine hair so it tends to look messy and I have to wash it every day so it looks halfway decent but this wont stop me from letting it grow. I like it, my husband likes it and thats all that matters.

Very true! You know, there are products on the market that work well in helping to thicken hair a bit - of course, I don't know what your income level is or anything, but if you'd like, I'll let you know the names of some. Certain vitamins can also help. Hormones, of course, are the best but I don't know how to get you any of those except to suggest drinking milk from cows injected with hormones...lol...kidding, of course!~
My daughter has fine hair, the coloring she uses - manicpanic - she orders from amazon for about nine or ten bucks -and it makes her hair soft and shiny and fullere appearing. She gets a shade of red but they have all sorts of shades.

Your hair sounds great, RitterSport. I know what you mean about mothers and short hair on their kids - mine was the same way. Once I left home at 17 I let it grow. and there was nothing she could do then.
As long as I can wash my hair and care for it, it will stay as it is with a little trim for the ends here and there!

I've had short hair, I've had long...
I like mine long enough to put up in the summer and short enough to have down during the winter, so I generally get it cut in October, but I haven't had it done yet, I hope I don't miss it again this year...

Sounds like a good way to deal with it! Seasonal hair length - never thought of it that way! Most would do the opposite of what you do with the seasons! I'm used to women getting their hair short in the summer because it's cooler - yet I'll put mine in a french braid or wear it up somehow - and it's cool. In the winter - down - it's like a scarf ..lol...

When I was working in the home health care team I met a lot of elderly women and only one woman out of the 500 women I met had long hair. In my country it is very unusual to see an elderly woman with long hair. I am 35 and I haven't had short hair since elementary school. I want to keep my long hair for many years. I don't know if I will cut it one day. I wouldn't do it to "fit in" or because long hair is very uncommon when you get older, but because short hair would be easier to manage when I get older.

I find my long hair is easy to manage because I have a set routine. I comb it before washing it, which I do every night in the shower. I use the tube Neutrogena shampoo and the same brand conditioner. I wash thoroughly, then spread some conditioner throughout, while it's rinsing I comb it again, then I comb it when out of the shower after towel drying. Then I leave it alone. In the morning it is tangle free, and soft and shiney - even with a hint of grey! LOL

my grandmother had long hair all her life, but then maybe she was of a generation that didn't go to the hairdressers regularly. she had auburn hair, it faded in colour when she was older but still had some colour. she used to wear it as two plaits wound round on the side of her head, but my mother when she was older just had it cut short, like most women of her generation.
but things are changing again, and mostly people are now doing whatever they want to, i have mine just above my shoulders, but long enough to tie up in a bun if i wanted to, but short enough to leave loose most of the time.
the trouble with keeping it very short is you have to go to the hairdressers all the time, and the time when women went to the hairdressers once a week for a perm has long gone.
i think you should just do whatever you want to, after all its only social pressure to conform that forced women in the past to have a perm, and thst's not something we should be encouraging.

when I got married twenty years ago - at age thirty five - my hair was long - halfway down my back - and I got a long curly perm...it looked terrific! the girl who did it was a pro - and I had it done at one of those hair places within a SEars or jcPenney - I forget which one now - but she did a fabulous job. My wedding pictures are great memories of it.

Oh...I don't think so...I love long hair...In my family,There have no such rules...
All people are interested in growing hair...If you have interest in that system,Then you can follow them...But I will not agree with you...Fifty is not a old age...
You half enough time to live a long life...You should lead a colorful life...I like to lead a great life by enjoying at it's maximum...Live long life as enjoying ourselves....I always like to grow hair...Hair is the main beauty of a girl...I am a girl..My mom will not allow me to cut the hair...I will cut the thin parts of the hair...But my mom will not allow me to that firstly..Then I will say that a lot of times...Then at last,She will allow me to cut the hair...Keep growing hair.... :-)

I think that every lady should hair hair as long or short as she chooses. When that lady gets old I don't think there is a need to cut her hair. My sister is aged 44 years old and she has really long dark brown straight hair. All ladies get gray hairs gradually over the years. Since age 30 years old I have had a few gray hairs. One time at age 31 years old I got my hair colored an gingery brown. It think it really suited me however it put my hair is a poor condition. I have long hair and I wish to grow it even longer. I am not yet age 40 years old. I am sure that my hair will stay long if I go into old age.

I've seen women who are all grey with long hair - and their hair looks soft and neat - not unkempt. Yes, it is a personal choice - whatever we are comfortable with.

Yeah, I've noticed that too. I've asked my mom about that and she said that that is because they are busier now and don't have time to style their hair. Plus it gets in the way of their work, so it was better if it was shorter so they could manage it more, and their time as well.
I haven't decided yet if I'll cut my hair or not when I grow older. I also have long hair since I was in elementary.

I think if you develop a good, easy hair care routine it won't get in your way when you get older. That was what my mother always said. Her hair was shoulder length till my sister and I came along -then it stayed very short forever. Yet, she was still curling her hair and fixing it and spending time on it! I spend less time on my longer hair now than she ever did when she was alive and had short short hair! go figure...lol.

Yes I believe a female should cut her hair shorter when she gets old. This is because our hair turns gray as we grow older so it is no longer pleasant to sport a long hair if it is turning gray. It would take a lot of maintenance to cover the gray ones if the hair is long. Also as we grow older, unless we can supply our hair with enough nutrients, it tends to fall and grow dull so for me it is better to just cut it short to make it more manageable.

I don't know, salonga. I have some grey hairs, and my bangs have a streak of grey - but my hair is soft and shiny at nearly 56 years of age. I guess I just have good hair nutrients - but even my 19 year old thinks the grey streak looks "distinguished" ...lol. As long as my hair is not dull and brittle, I'll stick with long hair!

I don't think we should be pressured on doing something that we don't want to do. If you want you long hair then keep it, if you want to color it then do it. My grandmother who is in her 70's has long hair. I see nothing wrong with it. I actually think that some short hairstyles ages you so why do it? Some short hairstyles does look really sophisticated. Os I guess it depends on the cut and styling but if don't want to do it then don't.

so true, tessa9 -you do what pleases you with your own hair and sense of fashion. Esp. at a certain age when we don't need to worry about pleasing another!

I think it just depends on the person if she wants to cut her hair short or not. I don't think it has something to do with age. If you don't want to cut it, then don't. It's really your choice.

That is so true, clearwater18. It's good that age is not a consideration - otherwise, everyone over 40 would have short short hair!

Here in India, it is othe way round. Girls trim their hair, try out nice haircuts. But once they are married and older, they tend to grow their hair. You hardly find a woman in India in her 30s or 40s who has short hair. :)

Wear your hair in a way you are comfortable with it. If you think your hair is healthy as it is, then leave it that way. So long as they are healthy even if they are grey I see no reason to follow the tradition your mother used to have. I wish that my hair will be like yours when I grow old.

Oh no, I don't agree with that at all but I have noticed a lot of girls cut their hair as soon as they get married, I have always had long hair and I could never understand this, to me it looks like some girls just can't be bothered once they have caught their man... I think a lot of men really like long hair on women, I like long hair on men as well..

and just think what a shock that is to the newlywed husband! Not that he doesn't love his wife, but still....she could at least talk to him beforehand. Or just trim a few inches and not go whole hog!

It seems that when women grow older, then they should not have long hair as well as girls. But I don't think so. I think it is alright for grown women to have long hair. It is their choice. As long as they are fine with it, nobody should feel disturbed.

I've always had my hair long & I'm a man... Well, may be not "always" since on few occasions I did get a hair cut & it was pretty short... But I had my long most of my life... At one point, my hair was down to my knees... Now that I'm 40, I still keep my hair fairly long... As for women, I don't really care about their hair length regardless of their age... I guess it all depends on what they are comfortable with..

I don't think it's necessary to cut your hair just because you get old. But I think most women do it because their hair just looks better that way. As we get older, so does our hair it's not as soft and nice as it used to be and it tends to look dried out when you get older. So I think that women cut it shorter because it looks a little healthier and it's also a lot easier to manage and take care of.
