Vanishing Virtues

Are virtues making a surrender to vices in modern times? The virtuous are often tortured while the vile criminals are not brought before the court of law. This is really a strange situation in the present scenario. They escape unscathed and unhurt. It is time every one think about the possibilities of virtues gaining supreme. Good deeds really deserve praise and rewards aplenty. It is quite frustrating to learn that no matter how much we direct our efforts towards the elimination of crime and welcome the good note of virtues , human environment is non-conducive to such good attempts.

As much as I love modern technology, I really think that it is the evolution of the computer and technology that has caused virtues to break down. The reason that I think that is the case is the fact that people spend less time together as a family and more time in front of a screen and that means that we don't teach virtues the way that we used to. If people could simply turn away from the computer or television for a while, I think that all of us would be better people.

People have become selfish and self serving. Virtues, character and principles are a thing of the past. If a person acts with any of them it is a shock to those on the receiving end. I believe that in the finer scheme of things if we keep our own dignity and stay within the realm of these good attemps.

Yes and its going further downhill. At least this is what I think is happening in India. We have colonial era laws which are ill-equipped to treat the modern criminal. Secondly, our society is growing haphazardly…one section is still working the hard honest way and earning some money, another section is taking shortcuts with excellent pecuniary benefits while a third is just aping the second class, yet not doing good enough and getting frustrated and violent. With so much of selfishness, frustration and violence all around, how can good virtues prevail? The virtuous, the honest, the helpful are looked down as weak and stupid. It’s a complete moral corruption more than the financial corruption that is eating away at our society. On one hand I feel it’s the Indian psyche that is responsible for this disease, the notion of leading a simple frugal honest life that has in some way strangulated our desires for centuries and now with a more open world, we have just lost our balance. We have suddenly woken up to the good life which is forbidden in our society, we want to enjoy everything fast; at any cost.

No, Virtues are not surrendering to vice, even today. What is being noted, what you are feeling bombarded with, is the blast wave of media that enjoys telling a story often for money. You have to admit, vice makes for good copy. There is even a saying in journalism: "If it bleeds, it reads." Media is much more prevalent in life today than it was even fifty years ago. Then, you read the daily newspaper, listened to a news broadcast on the radio, IF you had a TV, watched the news. That was maybe an hour with media. Today, you get media even when you don't tune in. For example, when you are in a business office you hear the chatter of a flat-screen TV. TV's are in elevators, buses, places stranger still. Computers and the Internet have changed everything, media yells at you at home. 24/7 you are exposed every minute of every day unless you actively avoid it. Computers can control TV's and other devices that deliver media such as smart phones. In the 50's, a person describing a smart phone would have been looked at as howling bonkers. Media is rather quiet on good deeds as they are mundane and common. Stray animals are adopted, children read to at night, families gather for BBQ's, balls tossed in backyards filled with laughter. Strangers on the street exchange laughs, help each other with doors, offer pennies so twenty dollar bills need not be broken, and ride shares are engaged in when gas prices peak.

In the present day it appears more people resort to vice than virtue. Many of them appear to get away with it.this gives one the strong feeling that vice has gained an upper hand over virtue. But I'll affirm that in the long run virtue will prevail over vice.

We are conditioned to think that truth will prevail. There are many times we do not know the truth. There are times when god does intervene but it may require many other factors to be coordinated. I think if we stick to doing right other things will fall in place in due course. When we start thinking about others, we waste our lives, so I feel even if it sounds very selfish, that when we can, we should spend time thinking about ourselves. At the best, we can help others when we can.
