Black Friday Madness

I wasn't even certain I was going to go black Friday shopping until around 5pm yesterday. I didn't really have any specific items in mind, I just wanted to go look at the sales and see if anything interested popped out at me.
So, I showed up at Toys R Us at 8pm, doors opened at 9. At 8, the line to get in started at the front door, went to the left edge of the parking lot, all the way to the back edge, and when I got there I was basically across the parking lot from the front door. By the time the doors opened at 9 the line followed the rest of the edge of the back of the parking lot, out the driveway, and back down the road past where the store even started. And still more people kept showing up.
They let people in 50 at a time so the store didn't get too cluttered. They didn't necessarily wait for more people to come out, it was just a few minutes in between each group of 50. When I got to the door I was stopped and had to wait for the next group of 50 to be let in. The sherriff patrolling the front door began talking to me and the people behind me, asking what time we got here etc. He told me that the first people in line got to the store at 6pm Wednesday night and stayed all night and all day Thursday. I don't think a few deals are worth it to completely miss out on Thanksgiving!!
While I was waiting in line a few interesting things happened. First, a girl behind me kept talking about a $75 laptop she wanted. The entire line knew she wanted this laptop. She was worried they would be gone before she got in the store. She was right, about the time the doors opened she went up to the door and came back saying the laptops were already gone.
So we were still in line waiting to get in when the first person came out with their purchases. The girl behind me shouted to the woman asking if she bought the laptop. The woman said yes. The girl in line offered to buy it from her for more than she paid. She started at $100 and went up to $150. At $150, double the sales price, the woman was sold.. so she made out well. But the woman who bought it, all I could think was $150 for a laptop is not really a great deal!
The other interesting thing that happened in line was a group of about 4 people tried to cut their way into line a bit ahead of me. Someone else who'd already been in line went up and got the sherriff. The sherriff came over and had an argument with the line cutters. I didn't hear it all because they were a little ahead of me, but I did hear the Sherriff say that if he saw them try to enter the store he would arrest them!
They take line cutting very seriously!
So I think I finally entered the store at about 9:30. I ran around grabbing this and that, anything that looked interesting and had a good price tag. Found my way to the end of the check out line at 10pm.. where I waited another full hour before I reached the register. But while waiting in line I kept picking up more things that other people had set down.. one of the things was something I was very interested in. I actually sort of had come for this item. It was a Spider-man toy, but the sale was buy 1 get 2 free! When I entered the store they only had 1 left, so I couldn't get the deal, but while standing in line someone had set 3 down, so I grabbed them up and got the deal!
I had also picked up a couple of Monster High dolls that someone had set down, but I did not know how much they were.
So I finally got up to the register at 11pm. I asked the cashier about the Monster High Dolls. The first one was $25.. I said no and put it back. The second was $15, and apparently the deal was you got a $5 gift card when you bought a Monster High Doll. Well $15 isn't terrible, so I said yes to that one. But then she finishes my order and scans the gift card and it added another $5 to my total. Well, that doesn't make it free, does it? (I think what really happened, though it didn't dawn on me at the time, was that the register took $5 off the doll so I had to pay for the gift card.. but I was tired so didn't think of that). So I raised a little fuss about the gift card adding $5. The supervisor came over and instead of attempting to explain anything, she just voided the whole thing! So all my stuff had to be rung up all over again!
So, the second time around I said not to bother with the doll, so that should have taken $15 off my total... but it didn't! Instead my total was $1 more than it had previously been with the doll and gift card! So the supervisor came back over and said that what had most likely happened was that something hadn't gotten rung up the first time. They counted the items to make sure they had gottene everything and hadn't rung something twice.. and all they said was that they could ring it up again to be certain. Well no, the people behind me were getting irritated by now, so I just paid for it. After I paid I went off to the side to check my receipt to make sure I got the right price for everything, and I had. I was just upset. I should have left well enough alone!
So I finally left the store at 11:30. I was exhausted, mentally and physically.. and I was broke! So I ended up going home with my $200 worth of purchases.. and none of those were big ticket items. My most expensive item was $25 (a Transformer Lego set, buy one get the second half off).
Some of the best deals I got were the spiderman toy buy one get 2 free, $15 MP3 players, 5 zhu zhu pets for $10 ($2 each, normally closer to $10 each), and Nintendo DS games buy one get one free.
The problem now is that my 9 year old son has quite a few more gifts than any of the other kids (He has 17 now, the other kids have between 10 and 13 each), and I like to try to keep their # of gifts even. I am going to try to rearrange things a little bit to give him a bit fewer so I don't have to get so much for the rest to catch them up to him.
Did you go Black Friday shopping? Do you have any stories to share about interesting things that happened? What were your most impressive deals?

Could you just take back a few of the things you got for the other kids to even them out? They definitely got a lot of stuff. I mean if they wouldn't be happy with just ten things a piece then...I know my parents always tried to keep it even. When we were kids sometimes we'd mistake the size of a gift for being more expensive than a small gift. And we knew according to how things were financially to expect a small Christmas or not. Somehow they always made things seem great. Which you do wonderfully. I mean what other mom would brave a line like that!?

Quite a few it seems! LOL. Thanks though.
I was debating returning a few things, and I spoke to my husband to see what he thought, but he doesn't want to return anything. I think what I'll do is just take 1 or 2 things from the 9 year old's list and give them to another child to make things more even.. then get a couple more things for the rest so they all have the same number. Good thing I still have lots of time to finish my shopping! Last year at this time I had hardly even begun!

We went back out last night and picked up a few more things, so now the kids are basically done. I need 1 more thing for 2 kids just to make it even, but of course that 1 more thing doesn't have to be extravagent, just something to finish it up.

I enjoy some of the good deals I find. Went back out again tonight to find what deals were left over from this morning and found quite a few bargains. Am pretty much completely done with my shopping for the kids now, and they made out really really well! It will probably be our best Christmas ever!

No, I do not really have little kids to buy for. I do not think there is anything that is worth that kind of stress to me.

It is really not stressful for me, I almost enjoy it. I love shopping. I am not really fond of crowds, but you have to expect it on Black Friday and I find it to be sort of fun. I have gone Black Friday shopping almost every year as long as I could afford it.

I wouldn't get out into that mess if I was paid. I did go to Toys R Us once and stood in line for 4 hours for one video game. I knew it would be gone after that day and really wanted it. There is nothing worth going through the drama you went through. Tomorrow is going to be just as busy. And I'm dreading the internet slow down when cyber Monday comes. The commercialization of the holidays is just getting ridiculous.

I go because I think it is fun, I like getting good deals, and I have 5 kids to shop for so can use all the savings I can. I haven't missed a Black Friday in years.

You certainly had a great day and I would have liked to have been with you. I tend to dither when shopping and ned someone to keep me focussed. Rachel came home tonight so I do not know yet what she bought but she only had a few hours to shop.
She was ging to try and get stuff for Christmas and some things to help me too.
I have gifts for the grands and a gift for my DIL and GD's mother. I am not cooking this year - or rather cooking a ham and carrying it tomy daughter's for Christmas.s the big cooking will be out of my hands and I have extra specal V.I.P's staying at the Villa. Really extra special involving top security and as you know I cannot say who is is.
Any extra money is going on my credit card
Just used it for surgery and the interest rate is 47%

I think the madness on this day is ridiculous! I never have gone shopping on Black Friday and never will! I think people like you are crazy! I had a friend who went to Target at midnight and ended up they couldn't find a parking spot! My friend was dropped off just to get his flat screen tv! I even have heard of people camping out like a week before Black Friday! I can't believe people do this! I think "don't this people have a life?" I feel some people just do this to spoil the heck of their children, get in more crdit card debt and buy things they realy don't need! I know stores are doing this to get people in the stores,so the people can spend money and then the stores make money! I will never get it and never, never will shop on the day after Thanksgiving!

The fact that I saved over $300 today and finished my Christmas shopping makes it all worth while!

Wow..Just wow..lol
I have never been to a Black Friday shopping event. My mind would explode trying to decide what to get first..and alot of disappointments if I couldn't get what I wanted to get. I don't own a vehicle, so that makes things harder. No one else I know even goes..but I have had alot of injuries and mishaps happened on the news and other places because of people fighting, pepper spraying and pushing and pulling..running into each other with carts hard enough to hurt and cause alot of pain. nope not for me.

I went to the mall today, and nothing went on. Black Friday has come to Canada, but it didn't seem to touch Guelph. All I did there was go to the business centre, the dollar store, and Dairy Queen. Nothing really monumental. I do all of my Christmas shopping on line.

Odd that Black Friday has come to Canada. We have Black Friday because it is the day after Thanksgiving and the day we officially begin our Christmas season. Since your Thanksgiving is in October, it just seems strange that you'd have a Black Friday, but I guess that's the commercialism of it all.

Over here we don't have Black Friday but, we go shopping on Boxing day although I am not really a big shopper and one year just because I had to see what the fuss was about, I went to the Next sale which is a store that does an early morning sale and people queue up ridiculously early. I thought it was pointless! Lol
I much prefer just chilling at home!! Haha

Just reading your Black-Friday shopping adventure was already tiring!
The hassle you went through to get a few items which aren't even big ticket ones. I'm glad I don't like shopping when there's a lot of people around. I like a sale as much as the next guy, but waiting out in the cold isn't really worth it, I think!
Like you said, I don't think a few deals is worth standing in line early and missing out on thanksgiving. Specially if it's cold out.

While I generally hate shopping in crowds, there is something about Black Friday. It's sort of a rush and I find that I enjoy it a lot. Not something I'd want to do regularly, but once a year is fun!

I would not even consider going shopping on Black Friday. I have never wanted anything that bad and I believe the situation is thoroughly out of control. Shoppers and employees were hurt yesterday just like in previous years.
I had a very peaceful day making some photocopies and getting some pictures in the mail. Both the copy business and post office were relatively calm and even empty.
I went to Whole Foods to eat and that was a little frantic but I was there around lunch hour. Then I went to a book store to read some travel guides. The store was very busy and I did find it tiring,
So, when it was all said and done, are you satisfied with what you got on Black Friday? Do you feel that you got at least one great deal. You said you spent $200. Boy, the store must love you. That is why they have Black Friday. Was it worth it to you?

I got upset at the cashier.. which can happen any day of the year at any time. I think she was a bit too new, otherwise she would have known and explained to me where the savings was. Also her supervisor did not handle the rush very well, otherwise she too would have taken the time to explain it to me instead of just voiding the order. I do not blame Black Friday, I blame those particular employees. If you can't handle the rush.. don't work in retail!
Yes it was exhausting, but things that you find fun can still be exhausting. Yes, I was broke, but shopping tends to do that to people. I find shopping to be a lot of fun.
Black Friday shopping is not something I want to do everyday, but I enjoy it when it comes once a year.
And now that I am done, I am so excited and cannot wait until Christmas!
I do some Garage Sale and Thrift Store shopping too.. but not for Christmas gifts (not this year anyway.. this year everything is brand new, though in past years I have given used gifts when money was tight).

I got a lot of great deals, as I stated in my post. I saved just about as much as I spent, so it was well worth it. Plus it was fun, I love shopping, and getting a bargain! I even went back out Friday night to pick up the left over deals. I am happy to say that my Christmas shopping is basically done now! I am very excited for Christmas now and I think it is going to be great!

But, you also wrote that you got upset. And you wrote that you left the store exhausted, physically and mentally plus broke. That does not sound like fun to me.
I did not read that you saved as much as you spent. That is a big savings. However, the savings are going to continue all month, are they not? Maybe not quite like Black Friday but there will be sales all month.
But when it is all said and done, you are satisfied and happy. And that is what matters most.
You're Christmas shopping is done. You got some great stuff at great savings. So, Merry Christmas.
I, too. love getting a good deal but I am not a shopper. I almost never go to a department store. I shop garage sales and thrift stores.
Today, Saturday is Shop Small. Shop a small local business in your own community I am going to buy a small plant at an independently owned, environmentally friendly, home improvement business that has recently opened next door to me.
