Ever Owned (or do You Own) an Exotic Animal?

I would really love to buy one of those bright green cockatoos. They fly around in the town where we used to live. The story goes that a long time ago they escaped from a train wreck and were never recovered. Of course, we can't catch them now. They look pretty wild. Other than that the closest I've come to owning an exotic animal was the turtle that literally knocked on our kitchen door. True story. How 'bout you? What exotic animal would you like to own, or do own?

well technically my pets are usually referred to as exotics. although they're about as un exotic as you can get. they're rats. I really can't see what is so exotic about a rat, but that's what they're classed as.
way way back when I was about seven I used to have a pet tarantula. THAT I can understand being classified as an exotic pet. but rats? really?

I've never heard of rats being exotic. Very interesting. They probably didn't know how to classify them. You are brave, my friend. Rats and a tarantula?

see the funny thing about that is that mother rats raise kittens all the time.
baby rats are known as kittens.
my best rat ever was called Kitten. she was the most loving, the most affectionate, and just the most wonderful rat ever. I've loved all my rats, but Kitten was extra extra special.

Oh, that is so sad. I didn't think we could damage a turtle's shell like that. And having a baby owl ... that must have been so cool. But perhaps owls are one of those creatures that just need to be free. And be careful with those mountain lions. YIKES!!!!

I never had an exotic animals but I used to see those animals on Animal Planet and I wonder how it feels to have one. Is turtle an example of exotic animal. Well I have an exotic animal before, it was turtle. This turtle is very kind and now shy to show its face. It do not hid in its shell. It likes to mingle with people but I return it since my grandparents says I can get a skin disease with them which I do not believe before. I love to see turtle after that and I begin to miss that turtle every time I see a turtle. I was given to an animal welfare group in the province. I wonder if that turtle is still alive because that was 20 years ago.

That's sad you had to give it up. I've never heard that you can get a skin disease from a turtle. We could probably look that up on the internet now. Not quite sure how long they live either. I think turtles are pretty durable.

Yes, I have to give it to the animal group since I was obedient before and my grandparents are rely strict, it seems they do not like animals near their home. I do not agree that we can get disease holding turtles too as I had done this on a certain experiments at middle school and I never got skin disease. I just hate my grandparents back then. They are really unfair.

When I was growing up in Texas, I had many animals that I caught and kept as pets including coyotes, Owls, pronghorn antelops, gophers, spiders, and even rattlesnakes, Now that I am older and hopefully wiser, I would hope that people would not have pets that they cannot take care of. I think that animals especially those that are endangered should be kept only by those trained in how to keep and breed those animals and have the ability to do so. There are too many rich people that think that an exotic animal including the endangered ones are expendable. This is wrong. However if the animals are being bred humanly the income of selling those endangered animals could actually help to save that/those animals from extinction.

Well said Oscar. And that is quite a scary list of animals you had.

Yes they are lovely. Heidi Fleiss has about twenty of them. I don't buy exotic animals. I believe they should be left in their own environment. Wild animals are just that--wild. They should not be expected to act in a certain way or act tame when they are wild. I would rather have a cat.

I am more of a Blue Heeler or a labradore type myself. Smart dogs.

I keep a wide variety of exotics ranging from parrots to snakes, lizards and even tarantulas. They're all very rewarding pets and provided they are cared for correctly, live a long and happy life. Our snakes range from tiny hognoses to 14 foot constrictors and our main aim with them is to provide them with as naturalistic a setup we can manage to give them. Eventually when we have our own house we plan to have a purpose built reptile house out the back.
My favourite would have to be my Grey, he is a real character and is a member of the family in every way.

I'm not sure I'm brave enough to own a snake or a tarantula. I guess I'm not sure how it could be rewarding. Can't hug them. Ah, but that's just me.
