So a couple of days ago I went to my doctor about not being able to talk. When I say, I'm not able to talk, I mean that I'm stuttering so badly that it is difficult for anyone to understand me. It's exhausting just trying to communicate with others. It's easier just to keep quiet and not try to say anything to anyone, because it is so tiring.
The good news is that I have NOT had a stroke or a mini stroke. My doc sent me to be directly admitted from the ER. I had a CT and a portable Xray while in the ER. The CT ruled out a stroke.
I was supposed to have an MRI, but the machine is broken. It wasn't fixed yesterday and it probably won't be fixed today either, so I asked to go home. It's costing me $225 a day .. after $750 I think, the insurance pays 100%. But I can't pay that kind of money. I got home last night about 10:30.
I have missed it here at Mylot... I'll be here posting today but won't be doing much else. Won't be writing articles unless I just feel up to it.

Sorry for the late reply, but between school and being sick I fell about 8 months behind on reading and responding to discussions. I can't imagine going home that late at night. I can understand not wanting to pay all that money, but I would still rather leave earlier in the day if at all possible. I think there was one time when they gave me an option of leaving or staying because of a bad snow storm going on at the time so I decided to stay. The one time I did leave late someone else was picking me up, but she wasn't in the best of shape herself so it was a bit hairy. When I was in the hospital last month they wanted to send me home Thursday night, but I told them the reason I was there at all was because I couldn't breathe in bed so they kept me until morning so they could order a hospital bed for my home.

Oh...one of those type of days...Sounds like the time when I was told to show up at the hospital at 8am Monday morning for chemo but after doing the blood tests they found that my counts were too low. That was around 11am give or take, but it took them until 3pm before they released me. Not as bad as 10pm, but it sure made for a wasted day. I just hope that never happens to you again...or me either for that matter. Have a great week!!!

It wasn't like that. I had to wait on my pulmonologist to come and release me. I wanted to go home the day before but he wouldn't let me due to wheezing.

Glad to hear that you did not have a stroke or mini stroke. Sorry to hear that you had to be in the hospital for the tests. I know how costly that can get. I hope they get the MRI fixed so they can check further and give you some good news.

Well, glad to hear that you won't have to have any more tests for now. I hope you continue to improve.

I don't think there will be any need for it now. The doc said it was conversion, and I think he is right. The stammering went away Saturday but came back Sunday for a few hours...and came back a little bit today.

I'm glad that it's been confirmed that you didn't have a stroke, PQ. It seems iniquitous to me that you have to pay anything at all (but that's another question entirely and another bone in my bonnet ... or should that be a bee in my craw?).
If, as seems possible, your speech problem is due to stress or other emotional difficulties ('emotion', of course, being in the rather wider sense of being worked up about anything), then some kind of therapy which helps you deal with that may be useful ... even just being AWARE of when you are getting worked up can help!
Something which I have long been interested in is called Emotional Freedom Technique - EFT. The 'inventor', Gary Craig, has now retired and his website (where many tutorials, hints and tips were entirely free) has also gone, though I think that someone has archived it somewhere. There are many people, however, who use and explain the technique, unfortunately not always accurately and generally with a view to selling something sooner or later.
I did a small amount of searching and I think that you'll find this site useful: http://efttappingtechniques.com/eft-tapping/eft-manual-part-1/ You do have to sign up to get the free manual (you can always unsubscribe later, of course) but the site IS clear and written by someone who I know was associated with Gary and approved by him. I can only suggest that you try it - it's quick and easy to learn, is friendly and non-invasive (has been used by children to help with emotional trauma and school results with reports of much success) and is free (unless you choose to work with a therapist).

I wonder if you did take the time to read my link, PQ, and whether it helped at all. If you did, did you try the tapping? I have been using this technique for quite a while and have definitely found that it helps but I always feel that the tapping bit is really just a way of introducing a bit of "discipline". It seems to me that the most important part is recognising the things that are causing the problem and saying (out loud or in your mind) that you "fully accept and love yourself" each time.
I think that prayer sometimes has a similar function. It helps to bring the things that trouble us to the fore and allows us to accept them and to feel that we own them enough to be able to 'give' them to God. Then we somehow feel assured that we are loved. The knowledge that other people are praying for us also helps us to understand that we are loved. Maybe that is the crucial thing ... that we should feel that we are loved but also that we ourselves are worthy of our own love.
The human mind is a stupendously complicated thing! Everyone is different in the way that we learn to deal with it. Prayer is one way, EFT is another and there are many other ways. What seems 'right' for one person may feel 'foreign' and awkward for another but they are nearly all worth trying. I don't think that, because EFT doesn't specifically call on a 'higher power' that it is necessarily 'Godless', in fact, Gary Craig, its originator, is a very spiritual person. It could be said that he was led to develop his technique as a way of bringing people back to a proper understanding of themselves and, thus, of God.

Glad it was not a stroke. But has the stuttering ceased? Did they give you any further reason to be concerned? I would say for what it was costing you indeed the repair person better get the lead out, then again going home since you feel alright saves you money in your pocket.

Mostly it is gone, but it does come back. It came back Sunday at church and I stayed that way almost all day. I started back this morning some with stammering because I got anxious.

I am happy the possibility of stroke is ruled out, but what caused the stammering? there must be a reason behind it, we have lot of modern equipment but still they can't detect many things at times..
last week i had severe pain in by belly, left side, well my uterus, gall bladder and appendix were removed long back, they did ultrasonoscopy, endoscopy etc, nothing wrong could be detected, lastly they gave antibiotics and antacid pills.
God bless you sister, get well soon
Happy posting, cheers.

Hi Kalyni, the stammering must be caused by stress and anxiety. It's been coming and going the last few days... so it's not 24/7 anymore.

hi dear PQ I am glad they were able to rule out a stroke. Good to know you are back home again and hope the doctors will be able to help you. Maybe you just need mew meds or different meds as meds can also have nasty side effects.

I hope they can help you get the stuttering under control and it is nothing serious. Good luck. If they could not do anything, you should not have to pay in my opinion.

It’s a conversion disorder, and as you know I’m better now… thanks be to God. Once I handled some things that were troubling me I was let out of jail, so to speak. It was instant. I still stutter every once in a while now… not all the time.

Wow PQ, I hope they find out what is wrong. Are there any other symptoms? Sore throat or headaches?

The doc said it's a conversion disorder. He compared (not sure if compared is right word) it to someone having fibromyalgia. He said my problem and theirs is driven and fuels by depression, anxiety or stress. He said no one knows why people get conversion disorders, but the brain converts the stress into a physical condition.

I am glad to see you back online. I am glad that it is not a stroke you suffered from. I am glad that you have insurance because I know health care can be expensive. My husband gets insurance through the VA and if it were not for that my husband would not be able to take care of himself. My husband has High Blood Pressure as well as Type II Diabetes. Also, he has a foot condition called Charot's Foot and unfortunatly he is wheelchair bound. My sister's kids come over to talk to him, but my sister keeps saying get away from him. It upsets my husband and I because my sister is non-verbally saying that my husband is poison. It is not my husband's fault that he is injured. My husband tripped over her kids toys because they were all over the floor. My sister feels the kids are too young to pick up after themsleves (they are 9 and 6).
Please take care of yourself and do what you feel comfortable with. Get well soon

They charge $225 a day as a copay. I can't afford that. I couldn't have the MRI because it was not working. So I was there for nothing and racking up a bill I can't pay.

I okay with the exception that my stuttering is so bad that it tires me out and makes me short of breath trying to talk. All of my other faculties are intact.
