Ever visit a Windfarm?

I have yet to visit a site where a windfarm is located, but I think I'd like to see some of these windmills up close...Driving home on a 2 lane road passing through a village last night,I could see flashing amber lights on a van coming towards me,and "Wide Load" across the front..the Driver had the window open, signalling Me to stop..He explained there were 3 trucks with wide loads coming behind, that it would be best to pull over to the side until they got past..as they did so,I realised the aerodynamically curved load on each truck was a single wind turbine blade.. and if the truck bed was 40 feet, the blades were longer, out over the end at the back..they were impressive bits of engineering,so the complete assembly must be awesome up close and in operation..
What's your experience or thoughts on windfarms?

I've never visited a "wind farm" as such, but between here and a town I visit occasionally, there is a row of wind turbines along the ridge of a hill. They can be seen for a long ways off. It's neat to see them in operation, but I don't know how they're controlled. Some of them will be off while others will be turning. Since they're all in the same are and turned the same way, I think there must be some way of controlling them.

That would be one of the things that would interest me too-I assume they're controlled automatically,I can't see somebody in a hut on duty up a hillside on nightshift with a flask and sandwiches standing by to throw switches!

I saw a bit of a TV programme last night about "Giant Machines",where a Guy went to check out a factory in Germany where they build wind Turbines...the hub end of the turbine blades are hollow, and this Guy presenting the show, who looked to be about 6' tall, had no problem standing upright inside it!
The control box behind the hub where the generator unit lives contains about 40 tons of equipment, and the Presenter described the interior space of the enclosure as bigger than his College Apartment..

I passed one in Normanville many years ago on the way to a photo shoot. They do look impressive. The biggest opposition to them at the time was that they kill migrating birds & make the landscape look ugly! Once they were put up, the neighbours complained about the constant noise & not being able to sleep at night. They had tests done on their animals to show increased stress levels, poorer yields, failure to breed, etc.
Windfarms are actually very wasteful & as you have seen, have huge engineering, transport & set-up costs as well as frequent & expensive ongoing maintenance. They are about half as efficient as solar farms for the same money, in individually optimized locations. They would be much better if the overall system of providing electricity from wind was engineered correctly. They were going to set up a huge vertical wind tunnel in Mildura, Victoria some years ago, but this was scrapped because the Return on Investment figures were unjustifiably poor.
The latest breakthrough I have heard recently was discovered by the Japanese. They have successfully used a wind lens to tripple the output!

I have been hearing that, about the sound of them turning creating a noise footprint that at least disturbs people and animals and allegations of the effects they might have on animals close by,and even on birds..Any that I have seen have been positioned in exposed upland areas to maximise their yield with no people around to be disturbed, only maybe the occasional free grazing sheep..are there so many places where upland locations suited to turbine use are being set up so that people and livestock have to co-exist with them? Can't the installation be fenced off to deter animals? I hadn't heard of this wind lens concept..sounds interesting..
