How long do you write each day?

Ever since I got my novel, Realmwalkers, was published I have been busy working on promoting it almost daily. In fact I have struggled to keep up my blogs, answer posts in MyLot, and participate in various writing forums I used to. Friends ask when am I going to write again and I just don't know what to tell them. I want to get back to writing again and maybe start another book. Do you set aside time to write each day? If so, how long do you write? Would an hour a day be enough?

How long or how many articles do I write a day? I mostly write 200 - 500 word topic but not a day. I mean I don't do it everyday. Sometimes, I write more than one a day, sometimes not. It depends. I have my own blog and am now still writing more postings. you can check it out at my profile if you wish to.

Splendid! You like to do articles! Those are great! I used to write some myself but I haven't found the nitch I want to write about. I have a lot of interests and so I have a tough time picking what kind of article to write. I guess this is why I prefer to do blogs instead. Sounds like you do a lot of writing though even if you don't do it every day. That works too. One doesn't always have to write everyday to be a writer. Just doing it often, at least once a week, would be enough, in my opinion.

It's great that you were able to get your book published. I hope to get a book published as well. Unfortunately, I don't really get the chance to write a lot. I wish I had the chance to write more often, but I'm just unable to always get the chance to do so, sadly.

Oh, sorry to hear this, Dodo19. Like anything that is important to you, time management is crucial. If you are too busy to even write for say... half an hour? Maybe you need to get up a little earlier than usual? That's what I had to do when I began work on my book. I didn't like getting up at 7AM or even 6AM, but if I had a lot to do that day, I did it, or else that book would never be finished. Like the old saying goes: Anything worth doing is worth making time for. Good luck!

"Gnawing at me to put on paper." LOL!! Oh, I do know that feeling so well. It seems some of the coolest ideas come to me at the worst times. For instance, I am presently trying to come up with a new short story or maybe even a novella and ideas were coming to me, even dialogs, while I was busy in the shower this morning. No recorder, no pen and paper.... GAHHHHH!!!! I HATE THAT! :D Writing can be fun and very gratifying depending on how you use it. I hope you never stop writing, Cher913.

I attempt to set aside time to write everyday. Sometimes, I don't succeed. Like today, I spent ten minutes outlining a possible introduction to a collection of articles that I am assembling and called it a victory. And those ten minutes were grabbed inbetween two of my college classes.
Personally, I feel that if you are a writer and you are spending all your time doing promotion, then you are in trouble. The most profitable activity that a writer can do is to actually write. While promotion of existing works is a neccessary task, writing new material actually has a higher earning to effort ratio...or so, it has been my experience.

I totally agree with you, Morgandrake, but at the same time, if I don't get out there and promote my novel then who is going to buy it? I am starting from ground zero and no one knows anything about it or who I am. I am going to slow down now that I have pretty much hit all the cities around mine. I don't dare spend the money to travel too far as it is just not cost effective. I will do as you suggest and get back to writing, somewhere...somehow. I enjoy blogging and short stories also and that may make more sense for me now that I have done most of the marketing I care to do for my novel, Realmwalkers. I have made a page on Facebook and will continue to do some marketing through my blogs and websites and that will have to be enough for now. Thanks for your input!

That's awesome. The most I 'write' in the average day is here on MyLot of course but also sometimes I update a blog on Xanga. Or Livejournal. I forget. LOL. And text messages, which I send plenty of, if that counts. Hardly. I want so badly to be a writer - like yourself! I always have good ideas until it comes to the time where I need to sit down and write, and then I just totally blank and start doodling. LOL. Must be a creative block...

It sounds like you have the desire, now you just need the right motivation and discipline. I never wrote very much until I was laid off and was forced to try to look for work and write online for money. Then I decided to try to write a book and with the help of Jack Shepherd, my dream of becoming an author came true (See my profile about the book}. Maybe you need the right place to do your writing? I find that if I am surrounded by books, I am somehow inspired to write. The library or a bookstore are good places that work for me. As for writing in MyLot, this is also a good place as you can write about a variety of subjects as well as interact with others here. Blogs are also helpful to keep up your writing skills. I do the same thing.

a pleasant day to you,
with reference to your main topic discussion, well, it depends on the topic that i am doing. thus, if i am making a short info about photography, usually it will take my half day doing that, as i need to be descriptive in my terms. but, if i am doing another topic like how to earn online, then it will just take me about 3 hours to write and share it. as i cannot really determine an exact hours. aside from that, i am really utilizing my hours as i don't want to loose any single minute logging on the net.

Well, it certainly seems you do it daily in varying amounts of time. An artical usually takes me about five hours to do, but if I am working on a book, it can take me all day easily. When I was working on "Realmwalkers" I worked from about 7AM till about 2PM and sometimes I got back on it in the evenings. A lot of work! =) Now that it's done I am mostly blogging and doing short stories. I find I need to keep writing daily also. I really enjoy it.

Hi Mensab! Yes, writing can be so fun and so satisfying at times. I wish I had time in my busy week for more writing than I do now. MyLot certainly helps with its forums and interesting discussions. I hope you do more than dream and blog as writing a book is now so easy and affordable these days. We are very lucky to have places on the Inet to get our stories and non-fiction published. Keep it going and write often. You can only get better at it this way.
