I was just watching this show on telvision, The Revolution and
Tim Gunn stated he recently read that a school here in the US
has just tried to pass a rule that student only get 3 passes
a week, not a day, but a week to use the bathroom...THey can't
be serious...they need their heads examined...that to me is
child abuse...How can you limit someone to use the bathroom
to 3 times a week between the hours of 8 and 3...thats truly
child abuse...
Whats your thought about this????

Kids have a chance to go to the bathroom between classes and during their lunch period. Kids will abuse the pass system to get out of class. Too bad too, because a kid that has a real problem like irritable bowel syndrome gets treated like an abuser of the system too. My daughter had problems and had a doctor's excuse for using the bathroom and they didn't believe it. She ended up letting it go in class because she couldn't hold it. They then said she did it on purpose. I should have sued them but it didn't occur to me.

Hi PointlessQuestions, so sorry to her about the issue with your
daughters issue..we are talking about elementary students where
are they going when they ask to go to the bathroom other than
the bathroom...They haven't learn the great art of skipping
classes...or just loitering..
I just don't think its right...these are kids with little to not
control of their bladder or bowels enough to be told to hold it...
and please don't reply that they should be in diapers..I don't
mean hold bladder like that....

I think that the schools expect kids to use the bathroom during the passing periods between classes. They wnt them to go before school and during lunch as well. The key is to allow enough time for this activity then. There are students who ask for passes every day, and miss classes, sometimes meet up with friends and do things that they should not do. There needs to be a balance.

hi gerty, obviously I wasn't very clear, I am so sorry
but these were elementary students, not middle school students
not high school students...they don't change classes..
Don't think they have figured out a lot to do while going'
to the bathroom other than go to the bathroom,ot they may
take their times, but I am sure they are heading back to class...
there are no passes given in elementary school students here
in this school system....

Another user posted a link to this same situation. It was one classroom and the principal says that policy will not stay in effect. I have worked with kids enough to know that some will abuse the privilege and will just go "to the bathroom" to get out of something they do not want to do. I have assisted in classes where that happened, in early elementary. I think the situation needs to be handled on a case by case basis. The teacher may have thought she was teaching them some self control. In elementary they do get recesses, unless that has all been done away with. Actually little kids these days do find 'stuff' to do in the bathroom, like flush things down the toilet that do not belong. They also say they are going to the rest room, but then wander around, they just are clueless. Many teacher schedule breaks for the entire classroom on a regular basis around here.

I don't agree with the rule at all. Don't think it's fair to put a limit on any child's trips to the bathroom. If a kid has to go, a kid has to go. It's that plain and simple. I wonder if this also means a child can only wash their hands 3 times a week while at school. That's unsanitary.

That is just inviting trouble. I know as a parent, they would deny my child use of the bathroom just once and I'd be right up to the school complaining. I would imagine a lot of parents would. I went through something similiar to this when my oldest daughter was still in elementary school. She was 9 and had started having her periods. She was self-conscious and needed to use the bathroom frequently. The teacher denied her. Even after I talked to the teacher and explained the situation...the teacher still denied her. I went right over her head to the Board of Health. Problem solved. I don't see how a school could possibly get away with 3 passes per week.

I think first hearing this I thought it was terrible too but after giving it some thought I think that teachers in some schools may need this rule to keep uninterested kids focused and not using the pass just as a ploy to get out of school work. And any child of mine if they need to go to the bathroom will go and it had better to use the restroom and not cause problems or be delinquent else where in the school for a period of time.

thats really impossible, only 3 times to use a bathroom in a week? if 3 times per day still ok, but per week it really impossible. if like this, it mean that ask those student no need to drink water? if for me, i definitely disagree with the school's rule.

Since I did not see the program I cannot really completely comment on it. I can only comment on my particular situation.
My students come into the building at 8:30 and are expected to use the restroom between when they get into the building and 8:45. When we tranistion between our classroom and our special class right around 10 we go as a whole class again. Right before lunch, we use the restroom again and then again when we come in from recess a little after 1. We also use it as we transition from reading groups back to the regular classroom at 2. that is five times during the day that my students have an opportunity to use the restroom. I give 3 passes a month for them to go when it is not a class time break. If they go beyond that three, then I feel they are abusing the system. We have a behavior plan in place and students can only lose a certain number of points. One way they can lose points is for having to use the restroom beyond the class time and beyond their three passes.
Obviously, if they are on a medication or are having other medical issues and have a parent/doctor's note that is a different issue.
