These days people just correspond over the internet but when I was a kid we had pen pals. One of my teachers connected me with a girl who lived a few states away. We corresponded for about 2 years then we lost touch. Did you have a pen pal as a child and if so how long did you correspond? How far away were they? Did you ever meet them in person.

Hello ladym33 When I was the child I wanted so badly to have the pen pal. I was fascinated by the whole concept and I wrote many letters to potential pen pals, but they never responded to me. I was very sad and wondered why no one would want to be the pen pal with me. Finally, I was able to have the pen pal with the soldiers in the war. They were very kind to write to me because they knew I was just the child. When the soldier got his break from the war he came to our house to see me because he had no family. He was very nice and he helped me to fix my bicycle even though in the process he accidently chopped off my finger but it wasn't really his fault as I stuck my finger in the chain sprocket whilst it was turning. Later, I no longer had this pen pal because he got killed in the war and I was very sad. I tried to get the new pen pal but my heart wasn't in it after that. It is good to hear that you had such a good the pen pal, but I am sad to hear that you lost touch.

I am glad that you and that soldier found each other it sounds like he needed someone ot come home to and you were there for him. I a very sorry that your finger got chopped off, I hope they were able to re-attach it. I am also very sorry that the soldier lost his life, that is very sad. I can understand why you didn't have the heart to try again, that must have been very difficult.

i had the same story as you. our teacher urged and encouraged us to have penpals from other places. i had a girl from the other island and we exchanged news and updates for a bout a year. when i finished the year with that teacher, somehow i lost interest in keeping in touch with the girl. well at that time, i had to pay for the postage stamps and needed to go to the post office to send the mails.

I did have a pen pal as a child. We actually met a girl scout camp. We became really good friends and we wrote each other all the time. I wish I could remember her name, but she got married and I have no idea what it is now. I bet she is on Facebook, but I can't find her. I also had another pen pal that I met at a resort. We also wrote each other all the time. I miss them. I might still have their letters. When I have some time, I should go through my memory box and find them. I might be able to reconnect with them.

I did. It was when I was 13 and I won a quiz from an English magazine. This girl sent me a letter and we kept corresponding until 4 years later. Then we lost contact as we were busy studying in Universities. However, although we weren't as close as years before, we are now friends again in facebook. :) It's amazing though, we've been friends for about 15 years!

Lol, I remember I did when I was in third grade. We wrote letters to our pen pals once in a while on these things where you type on and plug it to the computer to transport what you wrote onto it. I forgot what they were could though. I remember the time when my teacher said we were going to be assigned pen pals and everyone got excited and I thought "omg yay free pen:D". Yeah, well my pen pal wrote a really small amount every time she replied and I wrote a whole lot. I remember getting upset about it and asking her to write more, lol. I forgot where she came from and no, I never met them in person. I also joined a pen pal site when I was bored later but I never went on that site for years.

Yes, I had pen pals when I was a child. In fact I even had pen pals when I was in the university. But later due to the internet, I found it was much more convenient to use email etc. However, at that time not many people had internet and computer at home. This is why I lost the contact with my pen pals. I love China

When I was in third grade our teacher matched us up with penpals from NY. We had the same penpal until sixth grade and I haven't thought about him in years. His name was AJ and it took me three letters to learn he was a boy. I figured this one out cause he was complaining one of his friends said he wrote like a girl and AH HA! went off in my brain and I realized my new friend was a boy. I don't even remember what I wrote to him really, We wrote the letters on Mondays, and I did look forward to them, and missed writing to him when I moved on to Jr. high. Nope I never met him, but it was a nice experience. These days my kids are IMing or texting dozens of people they do not really know and will probably never met. Times has sure changed.

Yes I had and more as one. They lived abroad. We (mostly I) wrote long letters (over 14 sites or more). I only met one in person once.
