Is a Personal Trainer Really Beneficial? | | I've struggled with my weight my entire life but have always done everything myself when it came to losing weight... Everyone knows that's a huge burden to bear alone. I was thinking about getting a personal trainer to help push me along and teach me proper weight management, but I want to know for sure that it would be worth my money. I also have no idea how much one might cost... anyone have any advice?

I would never recommend going to the gym and watching and doing what other people do. I have been a trainer since 1992, and the reason I became one is because I got one. I was one of those people who joined gyms, went once or twice, got on a few machines, did not know what to do, left and told myself I would go back tomorrow, but never did. In case you didn't know, this is how health clubs make most of their money-people sign up, keep paying, and don't go. When I went one more time to join a gym, this guy put me on a crunch board and I couldn't do one! Not one!! I was embarrassed, to say the least. I left and thought I would never go back. I did go back the next day and put a sign on the bulletin board stating that I was looking for a trainer. A girl called me. She told me she wasn't certified, but that she was a bodybuilder and she thought she could help. We started working out together and for the first few weeks, I thought I was going to die. I was so sore. But after about 4 months, my body changed so much that everyone was asking me how I did it. I had only lost a few pounds, but I went from a size 15 to a 9. From 37% bodyfat to 23%. I seemed to have overcome my genetics. She was such a good trainer that I talked her into getting certified, and at the last minute I went with her. I have been doing personal training ever since. Back to the value of a personal trainer... If you just sit on a few machines and follow what other people do, chances are that you will not get the results you want. An experienced trainer can give you specific exercise routines that can get you to your goals. Just doing it on your own, without the education about biomechanics, periodization, the FITT principle, etc... you are not likely to get the best possible results. Getting a trainer was one of the best decisions I have ever made.

| | | 15. 31rn62 (41) | 11 months ago | As a personal trainer I'd like to think we are beneficial! While it is true that doing some extra reading can teach you some of the things we know, we've learned a lot more through experiance. Most of my personal trainer friends have a great knowledge about different kinds of excercises as well as nutrition. A personal trainer can get you started on a workout program as well as a diet.
I think our greatest asset, though, is our listening skills. Come in, work out and rant about your day or your ugly boyfriend. While you are getting lost in your rant you are working out. Before you know it your work out is over, you've burned a bunch of calories and you're feeling re-charged from lettin off some steam!
