Ella Fitzgerald |
| |
| Ella Fitzgerald has been praised for the immaculate purity of her voice, arguably one of the, if not THE greatest female Jazz voice of all time, and yet, in terms of emotion/feeling, she is (perhaps) not rated so highly. I disagree. A version I have of "My One and Only Love" sung by Ella makes me weep every time I hear it, and I have heard it dozens of times, in fact, it is one of the key songs I listen to in order to get in tune with the more emotive side of my own nature. Has anyone heard Ella sing "Stairway to the Stars"? Sends me there every time. The beauty of her voice was almost unearthly. Ella was the tops, in fact, still is. | | | | | |

| | While I am not all that familiar with Ella Fitzgerald's work, I do know her voice when I hear it. Something that you said about weeping when you hear "My One And Only Love" is something I can relate to. I tell people that I don't just listen to music, I feel it. | | | | | | |

| | I have discovered alot of Ella's work through thrift shops! I have bought four of her albums on cassette for next to nothing, and what treasures they have yielded, beyond the songs she is most famous for. I identify with what you say 100%. Music is something to be experienced, not just listened to. | | | |

| | My daughter has a voice that makes me cry. She has performed at many weddings and functions. When I look around the room I see so many people that are weeping when as she sings. Her voice is that powerful. | | | | | | |

| | Hi EB, no I didn't get a chance to listen to her yet, but I'm really looking forward to it, because of all the postively glowing responses to her voice on Myspace. I was due to visit my dad's today, but we rescheduled for tomorrow, and I will be going onto his computer tomorrow to listen. Carl | | | |

| | Hi carl, well i do know Ella she definitely has one of these voices but i´m not so in to her like you are. I mostly listen to instrumental music in jazz. Sometimes i listen to Billie Holiday, songs like sophisticated lady or april in paris. | | | | | | |

| | Hi L, well I must admit that "Sophisticated Lady" is a very bautiful number. I also like "April in Paris" very much; did you ever hear Sinatra sing it? I like instrumental Jazz too; especially contemporary Smooth Jazz. Thanks for replying. Bye for now. Carl | | | |

| | Hi Carl, i wanted to give you an answer to our discussion about Weater Report but somehow i couldn´t give a comment so i give you the answer here. It´s hard to say but i really like "Sweetnighter" there´s a composition of Wayne Shorter on it called Manolete, love that one. For me i´m more into the groups first period in wich Miroslav Vitous played bass it´s a more free form in music later on they got very popular. With the incomming of genius Jaco Pastorius the music changed a lot i also love the album "Black Market", this group has given us so wonderfull music in their existance. ps. Carl you have to get more money.... buy them all | | | |

| | Hi L, I'll definitely take your advice on those albums, because I know I'll love them. I love to hear bands whose musicians are total virtuosi, who have mastered their instruments, and Weather Report were also deeply melodic, in thrall to beautiful melodies which is always important for me. I like to hear sheer talent; if you know what I mean, and that is not always easy when it comes to Rock music! I read a biography of Jaco some years back: that man was too gifted to live, and it made very sad reading. Have you heard his more commercial work, as say with Joni Mitchell? Carl | | | |

| | Hi L, well yes, the Jaco book made me feel bad, because this extraordinarily talented man threw everything away. It seemed like such a pointless waste; you just wanted to tell him to stop but of course it was too late. Thanks for the compliment; you have great taste in music too, L. I knew you were from Germany, I visited your home page here at myLot, I'm from the UK, near London. Nice to know you. Carl | | | |

| | Hi C, comming back to Jaco, yes he was very gifted but i wouldn´t say that it was a waste, he left a lot back on earth, not every human has this abillity. Look at Mozart and his tragic life and there are lots of more of these in any kind of way unique individuals, they all left behind a big heir in their epoch. So for me i say they have used their time that they had, not everyone can say this of his own life. Like Frank Zappa i think he was 52 years old when he died, a bad day, i felt so sad at it, but i still listen to his great music and it really gives me happiness in side when i hear it. There´s no waste in life, everything has it´s time and comes to an end, bye C. ps. hope i got it right you know german...lol | | | |

| | I do see your point L; but still I feel sad for Jaco; he wasn't well; out of control; but then...he lived his life exactly as he wished it, and left behind a body of artistic work; few achieve that. He attained a kind of immortality... | | | |

| | Hi l, oh yes, it's difficult not to like Zappa, the man was an extraordinary talent, who covered so many musical fields. His early albums with the M of Invention were so broundbreaking that they effectively dwarf the competition interms of artistic/progressive Rock music. I am most familar with his early work; "Hot Rats" was starker, but I can recall buying that in the mid 1970s, at a time when I was most hungry for experimental Rock music. I was a big Can fan; do you like Can, lewah? I incline to like Zappa's epic orchestral music best. When I was in Paris, they played some of his classical pieces on the radio, and they were most impressive: he was of course a great admirer of modern classical music: Varese; Boulez &c. My only complaint about Zappa is his lyrics; some of them are far from being to my taste, but that does not alter my regard for his momnumental musical talent. He was after all a genius. Lewah thanks a bunch for adding me to your friends list. Take care dude talk later carl | | | |
