Should we be looking for new planets to inhabit? email this discussion to a friend?

The human race seems to have given up all efforts to save our planet, and instead all the money seems to be going into space exploration and finding a new planet to colonise, once we've completely trashed this one. Shouldn't we be trying to repair the damage we've done and keep this planet habitable? And if the scientists should find a new habitable planet, will all the rich folks blast off to live there, leaving the rest of us to the waste we've made of this planet? Will the Earth be even more of a dumping ground for them, with a kind of "Metropolis"-esque thing going on, all the workers living in squalor, working our butts off for the "master-race" of rich people who own the factories and companies living on planet Zog, where they don't have to see the effects of their actions? What do you all think? I personally find it a pretty terrible thought, but knowing humankind, that's probably the way it will go!

we have made such a mess of this planet i dont know why we should destroy other planets
all the money being spent on wars, outerspace exploration and all the other usless things could make this planet a better place to live withing 6 months for everyone
how much does every goevernment spend on war/army every week it would have to be a total of a few billion dollars, now a few billion dollars spend on education the poor, renewable energy, etc each week we all could be in luxury within the next two years

Yes we should be looking, as this planet is on it's way out, because I feel that earth is getting nearer and nearer to the sun and we will not be able to stand the heat in the not to distant future.

LOL, deeky, I could be wrong, but I thought according to the expanding universe theory if anything we should be moving FURTHER away from the sun with time.

Although the earth is getting hotter due to global warming.

myLot reputation of 71/100. Janono630 (212)  2 years ago

no neither of those are true, but the sun is slowly expanding and will eventually "swallow up" the earth but that will be in a couple billion years so i think we are ok for now.

Oh yeah, let's leave our waste behind and go pollute and kill another planet!
Human beings have been nothing but a parasite to this poor planet. Just like a flea infested dog being sucked dry and left to die in flea doo doo.
I think we need to stay here and leave other planets alone.
You're right about the fact that it would be the rich that would go to that new planet, too.
I can definitely see them sending all their garbage back here, too.
Earth will just be a giant dump.

Mankind will probably mess up these new planets like they did earth, eventually. Or hopefully they will have learn from the mistakes they have made on earth and create the ideal world. That would be nice.

It's way too late to try and repair global warming, I think that we should try to salvage what we have left of our planet, although some don't think so, I don't think humans will be able to find anyother planet where they can live on like they live on earth, they are just wasting their time and money, that's my opinion.

Humans are capable of learning from their past mistakes. I doubt they were destroy the next planet that is capable of inhabiting. We found out our mistakes on Earth a little too late. We're trying to fix this but it requires everyone to contribute, which is almost impossible. The best way would be to start over in a new planet similar to earth.

People will just take their bad habits with them to whatever planet they try to colonize! It's not too late for the earth, if humans wanted to they could start right now to reverse the effect of the damage we've done and are doing every day. People don't want to give up certain conveniences, and it's compounded by the rich keep certain technologies in prominence because it makes the most dollars for investment compared to more environmentally friendly means.

If people can't change her and now in the face of the disaster we are creating for ouselves, moving to a new planet isn't going to suddenly make them change, it just gives them new ground to exploit.

Well, I'm sure the attitude there will be by most higher ups concerning this (if it isn't already) is, whoops, we messed up this planet, let's find the next one! A lot of people are in denial about just how much damage Earth has suffered, but I think part of it is natural too. We should be prepared for the fact that, in some distant place in the future, the earth is going to go through it's next stage which will make it pretty much an entire ocean with no land. We're not helping with all our gas-powered cars and waste and such, but in the end, it's going to happen. Just like the ice age. The Earth goes into different ages. If we truly want to survive as a race, humans do need to eventually look for new planets to live on. Earth's not going to be livable forever.

As for 'Metropolis', I'm not sure about that. Knowing how stubborn the human race is, I'm sure we won't leave until we absolutely HAVE to. Hey. It'd make for a good movie!

I'm not sure where you heard that
1-Our planet is dying
2-No one is trying to stop environmental decay
or 3-More money is invested in space exploration than environmental research

because I'm not sure any of those are true. I don't think there is any real chance that humans will live on any planet other than Earth, at least not for a very very very long time. Its just way way off in technology to be feasible.

Have to say I agree with your comments. There are many people out there still trying to save this planet. I think you will see attitudes change dramatically towards the environment over the next ten years.

yes we should look for other planets to inhabit..
this earth could only support us for so many years..
before all resources would be used up..
but its still a long long time from now..
like hundreds of years lol

Why do u think so?
Nature has gifted us such beautiful region.
Why to quit it?
And one thing we should we remember that we are the only person to pollute it so it is our responsibility to give its beauty back rather than running out
