Oprah Openig a School in South Africa

I am not sure where I stand on this one. On the one hand there are many hundreds of inner city youths who do appreciate "free" education and strive to do the very best they can and achieve scholarships to college's they would not be able to afford to attend otherwise. But then on the other hand you have those who never attend school or disrupt the school when they do. I think she should have chosen her words more wisely and with some more tact than she did. I for one applaud whole heartedly all that Oprah does. She makes a difference and that is not to be taken lightly.

It's hard to accept when a person makes a blanket statement of how a certain group of people does/doesn't act or behave themselves. There are certainly some inner city children who appreciate education and try to better themselves, but maybe she is looking at the whole picture. The school in South Africa is a wonderful idea. For all the bashing they recieve, Americans give more away to the world than any other country

Forgive me if I hurt your feelings. But to me, Oprah Winfrey's statement has an element of 90% truth in it. Most inner city kids don't appreciate free education - they are surrounded by them but never give it a damn care. It's like taking things for granted. Once the thing is no longer available, only then regret will come. To me if they feel slapped, then good for them. Only those who doesn't appreciate will feel slapped. Those who appreciate, why should they feel slapped? Well, that's my opinion on this matter. Thank you and wish you a happy new year.

thats great for oprah but what about the american children?

I believe we need to stop being so critical. If this is what Oprah believes then she has a right to her opinion. Do I agree with her statement about inner city youth. Yes. Some inner city youth would not appreciate an free education. Other would love one. I think it's a great thing for Oprah to open this school. Really, I believe Oprah could have opened 10 of these schools, with the amount of money she spends on her homes all over the world, she could probably funded 50 of these schools. I am a former inner city youth in my last year of college. When I graduate I will be about 20K in debt. I would have loved to have a free education. But I do think these kids in South Africa deserve it much more than I because without this school there might be no other way for them to attain an education. I had another way. Loans.

I don't think there is anything wrong with what she did. Even the innercity kids here in the states have a better shot than the vast majority of those in Africa. Just my personal opinion:)

It's good that she's opening a school in South Africa. Maybe she was too stunned about generalizing inner city kids that made her decide to put up a school in South Africa.

i think that is very nice. but what about the other children. 3,500 is a lot of kids and 152 isnt very many. South Africa needs schools more than America does. Cause they need to learn and american kids can go to school for little or no cost for low income families. she's right the kids her in the states dont appreciate education at all. they actually hate it. no it's not a slap in the face to inner city kids because they know they dont like school and really dont want to be there but have to be. the kids in south africa want to be in school they want to learn and they want to make a better life for themselves and maybe one day get into college in America. the kids here dont have to go through all that those kids do.

I appreciate Oprah Winfrey's gesture to help poor kids. She is a nice lady who believes in giving back to the society. I really cannot comment on "inner city" American's and stuff because I am not an American. But if Oprah opines so I am inclined to agree with her.
