Don't expect your dog to talk back ... please.  email this discussion to a friend?

I hate when people say "see, Fido understands me when I talk to him ...". Dogs understand a command if there is a reward to understanding it. It is all behavior related, folks. I watched this couple last week confuse the hell out of their poor dog. The man would tell the dog "Down" to lay down while the woman was saying "Down" when the dog jumped on her. Then they looked at the dog and said something about what a dumb dog he was. Hello, who is the moron here? Well, it is not the dog. Keep the same words for the same actions. The term "Down" cannot mean two things to this poor animal. People should have to have basic dog training skills before they buy a dog.

i'm not agree with you.You have right in the fact that the moron were they. But i must tell you that i have a dog to.He is 11 years old.He is verry smart. He can understand me only if i loock at him.For example sometimes he understand that i go out with him only if i loock at him.He knows about chocolate, about onion becouse he doesn't licke it at all, he knows about a lot of thinck's.When i'm outside with him and i say"loock there is dady" he start loocking for him between people..and many other thinck's so i'm agree with the fact that dog in theyr way's really talk back in the way that they behaive.

Like your dog, mine get's excited when I just say Daddy is home or where's daddy. So I think they are like kids, they can associate some words with important things. She knows her name. Your better off getting down on the floor, if your going to get mine to sit, lol. She knows what it means, just has that I don't think so attitude. Mine will sit in front of me and give me looks, her way of telling me Hey, I need to go out before I do it on your carpet, lol. She's a special dog, just like having another kid in the house.

I diss agree because I know dog's that understand ther owners. They come home and tell the dog something like go and whait me in the room and the dog goes there and whait's for him. The dog was never traind specialy but the owners talkd a lot with that dog. It's a cookie idee but true, do you agree?

If you going to train your dog yourself just have one person do not a couple. Because as you mentioned yes the poor thing will get confused. If not take the dog to obedience school, where he will be taught correctly. I use to train St bernards. And that was indeed a chore.

Only one person should do the initial training, teaching your dog to do a certain behavior following a word. After the initial training your partner and children have to work with the dog and have to use the same commands as not to confuse the dog but help it to communicate with everyone that lives with him. A lot of people think that if they bring there dog to dog training the dog will do everything for them that it does for the trainer, but that is not true just by the fact that every person sounds different even when they give the same command.

Anyway, I will enroll my dog in a Basic Obedience Training Class, and they ask that the couple shows up and not just one person.

I have to disagree with you. My dog does talk back, I am serious. Due to his breeding he comments on everything with a different sound for annoyance, defiance, and acceptance. Some people think he is grumpy, but he is not. He is a lover and a high maintenance animal because he is so vocal.

For the most part I agree. But I think that a lot of dogs understand more commands or cues than what people give them credit for. I think it is like this, we have our people speech and dogs have there one speech, they usually communicate with there bodys and not so much vocal btw. Anyway, now the question is how good can you translate from your speech to dog speech and then teach the dog to understand people speech. Dogs do not understand every word you say but they understand trained words, body postures, hand geastures, the tone of your voice... A lot of times people will teach there dog a word and don't even realise that they are teaching it and then they will be surprised and think that the dog understands people speech.

I resent this! My dog does know what I'm saying, and even if she doesn't I love talking to her and pretending like we're having our own sweet little conversation. She might be confused when I saw "no" or "down" and that is my fault. But, it makes me happy and I know she loves it when I sweet talk her too!

My mom's dog is pretty smart. We can so "Go find Patches" (the other dog) and she will run off barking, and sure enough, Patches will come running up. She knows what cookie is, but we basically say cookie for all sweet items we are going to feed her. She knows when we say "Rat" to go sniffing around the the power rooms at our chicken houses, and we can say "go get em!" and she'll chase after the chickens that are left over after Tyson comes to pick them up. She's pretty smart, but we had her and only her for about 3-4 years so she got trained pretty well before we got another dog.

Very true and some people realy do not get how they confuse the poor animals, Bad kitty is used for ANYTHING that my cats should not be doing NO other term is used and when I say it they get it!

mspretteekittee (75)  6 years ago

Also along with this the dog does NOT necessarily know the word but is responding to the tone of your voice.

Sorry I disagree, my dogs are well trained since they have to help herd cattle so yes of course they respond to commands. Yet they are far more intelligent than that.
They don't get treats and rewards for everything they do because after their training I can't pull them away from their work everytime they obey a command. It would be comlpete caos.

They know if they have done a good job or not. So I believe they know whats up.

I've seen people talking to dolls and pens and getting angry at television sets and vehicles. So talking to pets seems a lot more normal.
Moreover there is more to language than what comes out of your mouth, ever wondered why you were able to understand things told in some unknown language in parks and television? I guess this answers your question.
