CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE KIDS WHO WERE BORN IN THE 1940's, 50's, 60's and 70's

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they carried us. They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a tin, and didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, our baby cots were covered with bright coloured lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking.

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags. Riding in the back of a van - loose - was always great fun.

We drank water from the garden hosepipe and NOT from a bottle. We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this. We ate cakes, white bread and real butter and drank pop with sugar in it, but we weren't overweight because .... WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on. No one was able to reach us all day AND we were O.K. We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 99 channels on cable, no video tape movies, no surround sound, no cell phones, no text messaging, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat rooms .......... WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents. We played with worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

We made up games with sticks and tennis balls and although we were told it would happen, we did not poke out any eyes. We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just yelled for them!

Local teams had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with
disappointment. Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever! The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL!

And YOU are one of them! CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated our lives for our own good and while you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave their parents were.

Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it?!

PS - The BIG type is because your eyes are shot at your age.

Can you remember these days and have you any great memories about growing up to add to these? Please DO NOT respond with only a couple of words or a yes/no.

I love going down memory lane ossie and seem to do it a lot more nowadays! lol One memory I have and will probably NEVER forget was myself and my friends who lived across the road were meant to be going to the Geelong Gala we were average age of 10 and under (in those days quite safe) it was so hot we decided to go down to Eastern Beach and swam in the water in our "undies" (inserts red face) We had enough and decided to go home with our "undies" draped over a branch over our shoulder and walked along the streets this way! No shame! We thought this was so much fun, but try and do it today, not!

myLot reputation of 98/100. ossie16d (6321)  6 years ago

Memory lane is a wonderful place to be caramello and I visit it often too. Not sure if that has anything to do with my age, but sometimes have to bring myself back to the present ..... just in case I forget what it is. LOL

Yes when I look at how children are today and how we spent our childhood there aren't many comparisons really, because we had the freedom. We still see it today in the country of course but still there are some restrictions on the children of today, regardless of where they live, that we never had.

Here is a photo of swimming at the beach in the 1960's and if you look hard enough I am certain that you will see yourself and friends there caramello. LOL

myLot reputation of 98/100. caramello (2171)  6 years ago

Yes ossie I can see myself lol I am the one with the bathers that covered myself so well, not showing too much for me! But you are right, what I said in my little memory was mainly that we felt safe in what we did that day and it was quite a walk home mind you! BUT it was not so safe when we all got home ( and I was bought up by my grandmother) who did not see the funny side of it! But looking back she was my age when this happened and I think she acted better that I probably would today if it was my children who did this as times have changed so much, more fear!

myLot reputation of 98/100. caramello (2171)  6 years ago

Now I look at it my response is probably not what you were after, sorry ossie went a bit off track! Oh no! lol

myLot reputation of 98/100. ossie16d (6321)  6 years ago

Memories are what this discussion is all about, and that means the good and the bad caramello. We were safe in those days but you are right in that it isn't the same for children today. I am only thankful that we lived in the country when our son was growing up and he too was able to enjoy this freedom - he also has the scars to prove it too. LOL

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE KIDS WHO WERE BORN IN THE 1930's,1940's, 50's, 60's and 70's .

I hope you do not mind that I changed your heading.
You see I wanted to be included.
I just made it, I was born on 1930.
I am probably the oldest member in
MyLot.
I survived a few awkward days in my life.
At age nine WWII started.
I was in Malta at the time
The air raids were incessant.
I literally went to school and
the class room was in a rock shelter
underground.
We had the lessons there , saving us time going up and down.
But the worst of it all was the food.
There was'nt any.
We used to eat cherubs off the trees.
Try and eat a cherub before it is ripe !!

Plenty more reminiscing, another time.

myLot reputation of 98/100. ossie16d (6321)  6 years ago

You are more than welcome to change the heading rolcam and I have no problems at all with it. I do not think that I can really imagine what it would have been like not to have any food during the years of the war. My mother-in-law also lived through the war in Europe and often used to talk about the deprivations they suffered during those years.

One good thing to note though is that they did try to give you some semblence of normality in that you were able to continue with your education, even if it was in a rock shelter.

Here is a photo of a group of children in Malta in the 1930's, which I decided was preferable to one from those awful years in the early 1940's.

myLot reputation of 98/100. ossie16d (6321)  6 years ago

I am wondering if you are flattered that respondant # 10 (jasmin) stole your response to this discussion.

myLot reputation of 92/100. gifana (2229)  6 years ago

Rolcam.....I am not far behind you. And I remember WWII very well. We of course didn't have it as bad as you but were were on alert 24/7. Maine was in a stratigic place being the closest state to Europe. U2's were signed off the coast. I remember my grandparents going out several nights a week to watch the skeis for enemy planes. Both of them could recognize them in a wink. They were always testing each other during the day with the silouettes of all the planes. We also had regular air raid warnings. My father was not accepted into the Army because he had an important job at the shipyard but he was an airraid warden at night going out to check and make sure no lights could be seen in our neighborhood. We had plenty of food but some things like meat was rationed and we only got it a few times a month. Fortunately my aunt and uncle hauled lobsters, and did some shrimp fishing so those were never lacking. I never ate so much tripe in my life and it's one of the things on my what not to eat list to this day.

myLot reputation of 98/100. ossie16d (6321)  6 years ago

Okay gifana the lobsters and shimp are fine even today but TRIPE is absolutely disgusting. Just the sight of it, without the smell, made me actually sick when I was a child so no way has it even been in my home. As a child it must have been both interesting (for a child that is) and also extremely worrying living where you did during WWII. That is something that I do not even want to think about and really cannot imagine how awful it must have been for everyone.

myLot reputation of 92/100. gifana (2229)  6 years ago

As a kid I didn't worry....we still had fun collecting papers, and tinfold for the war cause.

myLot reputation of 98/100. ossie16d (6321)  6 years ago

I have heard that lots of children collected things for the war effort. It made them feel involved, gave them something to do and perhaps that made it a time when they didn't have any worries.

I was born in 1972 I don't think there was such a thing as baby car seats that long ago. this is funny. Good article

myLot reputation of 98/100. ossie16d (6321)  6 years ago

Yes, there were some cairly basic baby car seats back in those days, or at least by 1975 because we received one when our son was born that year. However they weren't compulsory at that time and were also expensive, so many people just never used them. LOL.

It is good to know that you enjoyed this article and I do hope that it bought back some good memories for you, even though a little later on. :)

Here is a photo of a baby car seat in 1972 and you will note where it is positioned, which is a very definate "no no" in today's world.

Can you tell us a little bit more about your childhood? I see from your profile you live in the Philippines, so were you born there? Here is a photo of the Philippines in the 1970's which is when you would have been enjoying your childhood. :)

This photo is of Subic Bay in the Philippines and taken in the 1970's, when there was a large American and Australian presence there due to the Vietnam conflict. The Americans had a large military base at Subic Bay.

I mostly remember growing up in the 80's, because I was born in 1975. I well remember the advent of MTV and how huge it seemed at the time to have a music network full of videos. 80's music is still some of my favorite. I guess that at heart I will always be an 80's child! ^_^

myLot reputation of 98/100. ossie16d (6321)  6 years ago

Born the same year as my son, and yes he is still listening to music from the 1980's as well. I cannot remember if he used to watch MTV but I have heard of it here in Australia. He used to watch the music show CountDown with Molly Meldrum and RAGE, both of which are Australian music shows.

I remember those days very well.
And how lucky we were back then.
My Mum had 12 of us to tend to and she never waivered.
How many Mums of today would cope in such circumstances.
Some find it even hard work just loading up the dishwasher and washing machine.
All her washing was done by hand in the river.
We had no power.
We made up our own fun.
We could go out for the day and leave our door unlocked and come home to see everything just as it was when we left.
My Dad worked hard and toiled hard for us and still they both had time to take us crayfishing and picnicking as well.
Those were such good times I weep as I type this part because my Mum and Dad are long gone, but they values are still with me and I know they did their best to raise us well.
And my Dads hand of discipline was firm.Step out of line and you found out real quick what the consequences were.Having 12 of us did mean taking a firm line to keep us in line.
We were raised well and none of us got in trouble with the law.
Thanks for your post,I really enjoyed this one.
You made my day.

myLot reputation of 98/100. ossie16d (6321)  6 years ago

It is good that you have great memories of your childhood and yes it does seem that parents did make the time to be with their children then. Of course often there was no TV or other things to distract parents plus most adults looked out for children, their own as well as others.

What wonderful memories you have, and how exciting it must have been for you to go crayfishing with your father during that time. Certainly parents had rules and they did discipline us, but we are also a product of that upbringing and many carried it with us into adulthood.

Not wanting to upset you but here is a photo of some people crayfishing in New Zealand in the late 1960's, and may it bring back only wonderful memories for you.

We survived with one black and white TV. Six-transistor radios. And single speed bikes. What fun we had! All the kids on the block played together. We were always outside finding something to do...play ball, build forts down by the creek, create our own olympics, have monopoly tournaments, build a tent and sleep outside, hide and go seek with 15 kids, 20 mile bike hikes, driving 15 miles to get an ice cream, playing marbles, sneaking the latest issue of playboy, playing in the woods, going 30 miles from home for vacation and thinking it was to the end of the world, playing with Lincoln Logs and Block City, playing football with the older kids, sputnik, bomb shelters, one car in the family, listening to the radio when the DJ's had real personalities, kids were in better shape than now, hardly any fast foods and always home cooked meals, getting punished for being late for dinner, the wood paddle on the behind, the great Tonka trucks, building models...wow, what memories. I have survived and don't like the trends in government that are happening. And our freedoms being taken away one by one...I don't want to go back to the 50's or 60's...just not live with all this socialism and having some special interest group telling me what to do. I got another 30 or 40 years to live..I hope!

myLot reputation of 98/100. ossie16d (6321)  6 years ago

To that fantastic list add making daisy chains, playing hopscotch on the footpath, rounders, and skipping ropes. Yes I think in many ways that we had a great childhood and certainly much more relaxed than children of today. Thanks so much for bringing back even more memories on childhood times. :)

To bring back the memory of listening to the radio, here is a photo of a 6-transistor radio from the 1950's. :)

myLot reputation of 99/100. sigma77 (4282)  6 years ago

Yeah, nice to see that radio. I use to have a small 78rpm phonogragh that came with a set of organge colored Mickey Mouse records. It might still be in my parents basement somewhere...

myLot reputation of 98/100. ossie16d (6321)  6 years ago

It is probable that your parents still have things from your childhood, because parents do tend to keep all sorts of things. LOL

Here is a generic cover for Mickey Mouse records, but you can imagine it is orange, just as it was when you were enjoying your childhood.

Thank you, this is awesome. I grew up in the 70's and 80's and all of this is very familiar. I was just telling my friends the other day, how I remember as kids we were all skinny, and there would be only one or two fat kids per grade. Nso it seems that obese children of all ages are the norm. We were outside playing, and that is why we stayed thin! Thanks for the great post!

myLot reputation of 98/100. ossie16d (6321)  6 years ago

It does seem such a long time ago and many children from those ages were thin, but besides being active all the time there was also not a lot of fast food around. Junk food was considered getting such rich dessert once a week, generally on a Sunday for lunch. LOL

It is good to know that you enjoyed this discussion, which appears to have bought forward some wonderful memories for people. :)
