I have heard that the best way to improve your writing is to write 1,000 words per day. An easy goal when you are a part of this forum. ;) Anyone have other tips that are simple ways to improve your writing skills?

I think that "1000 words per day" thing is supposed to be all on the same topic. I could be wrong though!

A good way to mprove your writing skills isby keeping a journal. yes you can use the journal to write about particular things that have happened in your day, but also use it to write quotes, or thigs your curious about. Take the colors and each day write everything you see that is that color and then use the things you saw to make a shorty story, poem or hakiu.

I agree with the journal idea. Keeping some place where you can keep your thoughts, which are your own private thoughts, feelings etc etc, can help you improve your writing because you are writing on something that you enjoy.

There is no simple way to improve except to read and write and experiment. As for rejection - success is born out of the ashes.

Your post has got me wondering how many words I type per day here at Mylot, lol! On the days when I've made it up to a hundred posts, that would be a hundred words per post to reach the goal of a thousand words. I doubt that I write a hundred words in every post, so I'm not there yet! Maybe halfway there ^_~ I do believe that typing here at Mylot is a really good way to help improve your writing skills! Other methods are to do things like brainstorming, just write down topics that come into your head and then write a short piece about them. ^_^

I used to write a lot when I was younger but can't seem to find the time now with two kids. Couple of things I used to do was keep a daily journal, I always tried to have a note pad and pen on me in case I saw something interesting or unusual that I may be able to use in a story, and finally I would get my friends to name 4 completely random items and I had to include all of those items in a short story...great pratice and more often than not led to some great ideas.

I just finished a writing class where the suggestions was that you write for at least 20 minutes every day. The idea is to create a routine so that it comes naturally to you to write regularly. It is difficult when you first start, sometimes it seems like you are writing the same old same old every day or just writing scribbles so that you can get through the 20 minutes.

It must be about the same topic because otherwise you have reached 1000 words in no time. I mean you are writing in almost everything that you do. Answering the phone you take notes, answering e-mail boy i wonder how many words that is

I think that if you read good literature, nonfiction and classic fiction it improves writing skills by "process of osmosis."

Only one thousand words per day? Wow!! Sometimes I feel as if I've written a novel-sized book in a day, with all that is on my mind. Not sure if I have any writing tips, but I will say that this was a very interesting one. Thanks for sharing it.

I think 1,000 is about right. Julia Cameron suggests writing morning pages. Every morning, first thing, write at least 3 pages. Just go where the pen takes you. I admit I don't do it every day. I woke up this morning with something in mind that I wanted to write but I still haven't gotten around to it. I have writing group tomorrow so perhaps I will be able to write then. Good luck to you and your writing.
