My neighbors tried to kill my dogs!! |
I have a 1 year old Mini Dachshund, and a new 2 month old PittBull puppy. They have stated to me when I got the puppy that they were scared to have a pittbull in the neighborhood. Well, I have had them all of my life, and raised and trained them well. I also have a cat, and am not worried about him also. I have no qualms about her being around my yound daughter or anyone elses. It has been proven, by myself and I am sure many others that you can raise a pittbull not to be violent. Anyway, I assured them she would be aclamated to their dogs, children, and she would always be in her own fenced yard and if they were still scared they should not let their children jump my fence to take the short cut to the park. Well this was about 2 weeks ago, and this morning I found a small dish of what seems to be antifreeze stuck under my fence between my home and theirs. I called the sheriffs Department and they said they could not do anything because I cannot prove they did it, and my dogs did not get into it or get hurt. I am furious! There is no other way it could have gotten there as it is between two fenced in locked yards. The only reason my babies did not get into it is because I kept them in until I could go out with them this morning. I am not sure the exact effects of antifreeze on a dog, but have heard it will kill them. What in the world am I to do now? I will not get rid of my dogs, and I will not allow these people to hurt them. How do you suggest I take care of this? Thanks in advance and any help would be greatly appreciated.

1. classy56 (2203) | 3 years ago | you need to place a camera or video outside your home so you can catch them trying to kill your dog.otherwise you cant prove they are doing this to your dogs an anitifreeze will kill them, but i dont see nothing wrong with you haveing the dogs as long as they are in a fence in yard.

missybal (3711) | 3 years ago | Really this is the best idea, a picture is worth a thousand words and I would not allow your dog out without you until you are able to catch this on tape or at least watch very closely out your window. If they tried once they will again. I'm sure you have nice dogs, it makes me sick that anyone would do this to any living creature. I suggest also building a taller fense so no one can go into your property. Really even without the dog those kids don't have the right to go on your property to cut across to the park.

Katlady2 (4457) | 3 years ago | I agree that this is probably your best avenue to follow. That way, you will have video/pictures to show to the sheriff as well as to the ASPCA if there is one nearby. Those people should not be allowed to get away with harming your babies.

rachelcaron (893) | 3 years ago | I agree. Put in a hidden camera or something and contact an animal rescue place for ideas. I'm so sorry that you have to go through that. I don't know how anyone can purposely hurt innocent animals.

morsh8888 (444) | 3 years ago | Yeah I think, It is the best idea to get into it. Try to built some surveillance, be sure that the place that you will placed is can't easily been seen and not broken because of the rain too (because surveillance stuff, Does expensive).

and charge him for an attempt to murder..

amafrias (321) | 3 years ago | I have a camera and it has a motion sensor on it that I did not know about. I am going to give it a shot..I did mention to my neighbor yesterday that I had called the police and they would be investigating it, just to worry them a bit. Hopefully they will feel as if they are being watched. It is just not right to have to feel fearful of letting my dogs into their own space. Thanks for soem great advice.

| flirt853 (22) | 3 years ago | Being a pit owner myself I had to deal with a similar neighbor. He was putting rat poison in my yard and my dog did end up getting very sick from it, but luckily she made it through. Unfortunately, law enforcement isn't very helpful (and I'm a deputy myself) so I know. Unless you have proof (like the camera idea which is what I did) they can't do anything. I didn't know where to get the cameras that can watch it all the time so I sat in my house with my camera and waited almost 2 weeks for my chance. I knew he was doing it at night so some friends and I worked in shifts to be "look-outs". I was already planning on moving out of that house so I didn't hve to deal with that neighbor much longer after that. I don't know how it would work out for you after he got caught. Good luck and thanks for be a responsible pit owner.

4. mari61960 (3128) | 3 years ago | That's terrible, I agree you should get a camera or something. Antifreeze is very dangerouse to all animals.
It smells and tastes very sweet to your dog and is very appealing to him. Ethylene glycol is toxic however, and each winter, many animals are killed by it.
Symptoms of toxicity include seizures, vomiting, stumbling and lethargy leading to kidney failure. Make sure to keep your antifreeze out of your dog’s reach. Keep checking before letting them outside for now.
If you suspect that your dog has ingested antifreeze, take your dog to the veterinarian immediately.
Good luck, I hope you catch them.

amafrias (321) | 3 years ago | I agree, I think the deputy just really had no recourse when here. He knew it was not enough proof to actually charge them with anything.

5. ButtrflyDreams (697) | 3 years ago | It's a shame what people will do because they're scared of a certain type of dog. Pit Bulls are awesome dogs. Is there any way that you can fix the fence so they can't get anything under it?
| |
| |
amafrias (321) | 3 years ago | It's a chain link fence so they can slip anything through the holes. I wish I could afford a giant privacy fence, but that is just not possible at the moment. Thanks so much..
| |
| bkalafut (38) | 3 years ago | You can buy metal privacy slats to put in the chain-link fence at almost any large home-improvement shop. You can also use stakes and more fence material to block the bottom. It's a couple hours worth of work, but may be worth it in your case.
| |
| bkalafut (38) | 3 years ago | Note also that if they push through a modified fence, you'll have evidence.

6. brendalee (5064) | 3 years ago | Is there some type of animal humane society near you? I would contact them and tell them what is happening. I can't believe that the sherriff wouldn't do anything about it. Thats just wrong. I would only let the dogs out when you can be out with them. It will be a pain but you don't really have much choice. And as someone already suggested, get a video camera. They need to be caught and punished. Good luck.

7. emeraldisle (8978) | 3 years ago | Some people really take the cake. I've known others like this and I know it is hard to prove unless you catch them right in the act. The cops can't do much unless someone saw them put it there and you know darn well they won't admit to it. As someone suggested a video camera might be best. Set it up and hopefully catch them doing it and then the police can't argue with that sort of evidence. Short of that I would not let your dogs out there alone unless you know for sure they are not home. That way you can keep them safe.

8. mom2boys (274) | 3 years ago | That is just sickening how could a person do this! I mean if your dog was a threat, maybe but stil i couldnt see doing that to a dog! I think I agree with a previous poster, get cameras and set them up, keep your dog inside with you as much as possible right now and even possibly talking to them calmly and letting them know you are watching them now. this is just sickening, how mean.
| |
| |
amafrias (321) | 3 years ago | They know I am watching. I could see them peeking out the windows when the police where here. They have dogs, Shi Tzus, and they are always getting out because they do not take care of their sides of their fence. I have chain link all the way around, and they have tacked on some sort of chicken wire or something on their side to keep theirs in, and they are always out. I could have called the shelter many a time, but never do. I always help keep them in if they are not home and so forth. I have tried to explain to them that I have brought this pittbull home as a puppy and she will be around their dogs and children, and mine also. She will not be violent. I have raised too many. I know what it takes. They are just being unreasonable.

9. amanda84 (258) | 3 years ago | try to talk to ur neighbour again. tell them not to harm ur dog if u promise not to let ur dog out of ur house. isnt it much more better. decisions neeed a consensus bween 2 parties..and we cant blame them because they are scared of dogs
| |
| |
ButtrflyDreams (697) | 3 years ago | Dogs need to run & play & besides that, dogs need to go to the bathroom. The yard is fenced in...they should mind their own business. It's against the law to poison someone's dog.
| |
akuseru (1780) | 3 years ago | Decisions do not need a consensus between two parties. That's a compromise. What you are suggesting is really not a feasible alternative. Yes, it removes the dogs from harm's way, but isn't it a dog owner's right to allow his or her dog to roam free in its own backyard without being concerned about neighbors trying to KILL it? The blame for this is totally on whoever tried to poison the original poster's dogs.
| |
ButtrflyDreams (697) | 3 years ago | I didn't say they shouldn't worry. I said they shouldn't have to worry. Their yard is fenced in. They shouldn't have to keep their dogs in their house all the time. That's not an option either. All I said was that the neighbor should mind their own business & not do things that are against the law.
| |
amafrias (321) | 3 years ago | amanda84 I would never promise not to let my dogs into their own yard. That is not even an option! I will not be controlled by these people and there threats. I will keep my dogs safe, and will not let them out alone until it is taken care of and I am sure they are safe. I thin trying to work with them will be best if I can get it through their head that this puppy is of no harm to them or their animals. The breed has just gotten a sour deal from some idiots that do not know how to raise them.

10. akuseru (1780) | 3 years ago | If there is a branch of the ASPCA near you, they may be interested to hear that your neighbors attempted to poison your dogs. You could also try a news station that has a "watchdog" program and deals with consumer problems and local issues, but you may need more proof that it was your neighbors that did it. I agree with anyone who has said that you should set up a camera to see if you can catch them putting antifreeze where your dogs can get it. If you don't have one, maybe someone in a local FreeCycle group will be willing to loan you one for a while. In order to protect your dogs, it will probably be best if you keep them inside until you have a chance to survey the yard in the morning. If there's a possibility that they will try to put antifreeze out during the day, you may want to block off that part of the yard so none of your dogs can go near the shared fence. I know it's inconvenient, but it's better than coming home and finding one (or more) of your pets dead. And if it happens again, call the police every single time and report it. They may be more willing to help you out if it proves to be targeted attacks on your animals and not just a random isolated incident.
| |
| |
akuseru (1780) | 3 years ago | Actually, you MAY also want to talk to the neighbors about this. Just kindly let them know that some psychopath tried to poison your dogs with antifreeze, and you're concerned about the same thing happening to their sweet, loveable pooches. Don't let on that you suspect them of doing it. If they're decent human beings, they probably won't try it again after that.

amafrias (321) | 3 years ago | I am keeping them in with me, and taking them out in the mornings while I look around. It is a weird feeling to be scared to let them into their own yard. I hate it. There is a News Station here that does a special 8 on your side. They deal with things like that. If it escalates I may call them. I am trying to talk with them and assure them that Angel will; never be a threat to them or their dogs. I anything they should feel safer when she grows up because she will not be quiet when strangers arrive. They will not be strangers as their children are out there all of the time, along with their dogs. Angel wants to get over and play with them constantly. They are going on rumors about pittbulls and not facts and actually getting to know the dog. I think the children and the wife will be my best bet to go through. I believe it is the husband so set about the dog. He thinks I should raise her on a chain in my yard. This is absurd! That will make her just what he is scared of. This will never happen. His dogs are a mess. they are cute little Shi Tzus, but are all matted, and full of burrs where they leave them out in an unkempt yard 24/7. Maybe the ASPCA would be interested in seeing the condition of his dogs living quarters. The have to sleep under his house. My girls sleep with me..lol Thanks for the great response. I am getting my camera hooked up to my PC with motion sensor. I plan to tell them this also hopefully to deter them.
