No, I don't own a Pub but I now have a real one to hang in. It snuck into my little town and took the place by storm. The little villages (Pub Word) near where I live are littered with fancy and not so fancy bars, restaurants etc. The student dives have been here forever and la-dee-dah new places open and close constantly. It takes about 3 yrs. to open a new bar or restaurant here. The backer's "People" have to meet with the township's "People"....Lot's of people. New places spend millions on demographics, designs, zoning, advertising, stealing big-name chefs etc. Then, most of them close in another 3 years. But this place was different from the git go. It just seemed to open. They took an old bar with existing zoning, painted it outside, put up some flower boxes, hung a menu ouside and called it the Bryn Mawr Pub. I didn't think the name would go over. All the other new places have foreign names so hard to pronounce that we call up and ask about a reservation just to see how they say it when they answer the telephone. (Saves embarrassment) This Bryn Mawr Pub not only didn't have "People", they didn't even know about names. There were a lot of funny things going on there. I passed by about six months ago on a Tuesday and customers were flooding in...on TUESDAY. Nobody goes anywhere on Tuesday night around here. Most places don't even open until Wednesday or Thursday night. AND all sorts of people were going in - Seniors, college kids etc. (No demographics "People") Yet another no-no... College kids have their bars, socialites have their nouvelle restaurants etc... Everybody knows that -Just not The Bryn Mawr Pub. We finally tried the place on Monday (MONDAY Yikes!). As I suspected, they did nothing inside to spiff up the place. It's a big dark cave with a huge old mahogany bar down the middle, booths along both walls and swinging kitchen doors. Still kinda comfy. The sort of place where you stretch out and put your feet on the bench across from you. I couldn't see the food so well (No soft lighting. No lighting period.) but I don't think it was landscaped on the plate. Just sort of scooped and piled and very, very good. (Best Maryland crab cake outside Baltimore) The booze was cheap and the entertainment was some sort of silly trivia quiz that everybody got into. Imagine! A nondescript bar with good food, cheap booze and silly entertainment! Sounds...almost... like a PUB!... Okay, maybe they got the name thing right after all. Anyway, The Bryn Mawr Pub is my official new hangout. First hangout I've had in 25 years and I'm lovin it. Most good bar scenes round here are for the under thirty crowd. (How can this place get everything wrong & still be SO right.) How bout you? Do you have any weird little place like this near you? I know you probably do if you live in in the UK. Maybe there's even a couple in the USA (or at least a homey bar/restaurant) Got any pictures or good stories about your favorite haunt?

We have one just within walking distance of our home, so we don't have to worry about drinking and driving. Week nights are for chatting with our neighbours and friends and are very quiet, but at weekends we all go in a listen to the music, or if anybody can play an instrument, they take it along, and we have a good old singsong. There is a fish and chip shop just across the road, and the owner of the pub doesn't mind us ordering a meal and taking it back to the pub to eat it. I really look forward to the 'Craic agus Ceol' at the weekends.

I'm assuming that "Craic agus Ceol" is Gallic for "Fish and Chips". That's a mighty nice owner that lets you bring in food. I don't think I can push it that far. I hadn't thought about the drinking and driving but my place is also within walking distance so that's another nice thing.

Britons love pubs! When you come to Britain, ask for a direction to some place you are not familiar with; they would say like this, "You will meet this Pub and then make a left, meet the other Pub, blah blah blah." Yup, pubs could become landmarks over here. As if everyone should now about pubs. I live in the UK, I rarely go to the pubs, maybe because I am over 30? lol Or maybe because as per-food, I can only say that most of the pubs I've been in, didn't serve good food to my liking. But hey, congratulation to you in your finding a place to hang out, lad.

Well I am happy for you that you found a nice place to enjoy. I on the other hand live very far out from the cities. I have only peace and quietness from the mountains and wild life.

Lucky you. We'd love to have a pub to just hang out in, but there aren't any really comfortable places around here, mostly just restaurants and really trendy places.

English Pub - Cheers
At one time I tried all the British pubs, Irish, Scottish and English. Their owners were of the respective nationality and certainly the decor matched the country but they had mostly tourists for customers and were not really homey with regulars. So I gave them up and just go now to where my friends consider the place to be.
