Does Dying Your Hair Blonde Prevent Gray Hair From Returning Faster?

I keep hearing people tell me, if you dye your hair blonde, it covers the gray hair better and the color lasts longer. My natural hair color is a reddish brown and when I started getting gray hair, I always opted for the dark colors. Mostly reds and purples. I'm really not a big fan of blonde hair but...it seems I have to dye my hair more frequently and I am a liitle concerned about the damage to my hair. Do you think dying your hair blonde really lasts longer or is it that it just blends in better? Has anybody ever heard this before? Is it true?

Ok...this is from personal experience. I started to turn gray in my 20's. (I blame my kids, lol.) Anyway, I started dying my hair blonde at that time. It helped. Then I went a few years later to a darker color. The gray came in much faster. I went back to blonde for a long time. For the last year, my hair has been a dark auburn. I have to die it at least every two months to hide the gray streak, that makes my head look like a skunk. I don't necessarily think that it makes the gray grow in slower, but blonde does help hide it better. It blends into the blonde, so it isn't as noticible. I will be going back to blonde when spring gets here, because I am tired of hubby making Bonnie Raitt comments, lol.

Yeah, I am consider the blonde hair because I really hate dying my hair but I hate gray hair more. If I can get away with the grays a week or two more because of it blending better I'm willing to give it a go. Bonnie Raitt huh? LOL What does he call you as a blonde?

You really don't wanna know, lol...Just kidding. He really prefers me as a blond. It does help to keep the grays hidden to be blonde.

May I suggest that you go for blond streaks, it covers a multitude of gray hair. I have and love gray hair but as well Have had white blond, black, about 260 shades of red. and streaks. I just can not be bothered to have to re due or recolor my hair every month. When I was white blond My roots would be visible after 1 week and keeping that hair color was a full time job. I was lucky I had a hair dresser that knew I could not afford to have it done professionally and sold me the whitener as well as the peroxide at her prices, so I did it my self as she was more interested in me keeping my hair healthy. Than selling me a service. Nice lady

You sure did get lucky. I always seem to find the hair dressers who want to sell me everything. I was considering streaks. I definitely don't want to go blonde. I tried on some blonde wigs and I think I look horrible as a blonde.

I don't think dying yuor hair blonde lasts longer at all. I think it's just that people have to squint to see the gray roots, compared to the blonde bits. When dying your hair just choose a colour that goes with your skin tone. So many people opt to go blonde and it just doesn't suit them... If reds and purples suit you, stick with them.

Yeah, I don't think blonde is going to work for me. I tried some blonde wigs and no way. LOL I think I'll deal with red hair it suits my skin tone better.

If you are grey and dye your hair blonde then the grey won't look as bad when the roots show through. I have been dying my hair for years now and I car'nt wait to go grey, so my roots won't need doing as often or look as bad if I hav'nt the time to have them done. But to answer your question NO dying your hair does not prevent grey hair from returning faster.

I'm not ready to go gray yet....lol I have only been covering the gray for a couple of years. Before it was a couple of pieces here and there and now it's more than a few.

I for one think that dying your hair in general will in fact speed up the greying process of ones hair. I do not think that this is true as hai dye is hair dye and i do not think that it makes a difference in what color that you use!

Ok, I am 41 and I have gray hair, LOL I dye my hair to cover the gray, I did not wish to speed it up. How do I make it stop? LOL

it is just that it blends in better . your roots will grow grey no matter what you do but if you have a dark colour on the rest of your hair then there is a strong contrast , whereas blonde is a closer match .

That's kind of what I thought too! Is that your daughter in the picture with you. You both have nice shades of blonde. Well, I have until Sunday to decide what I will be doing. Thanks!

I think it just kinda blends in with lighter hair better than dark hair. I have never heard anybody say that blonde covers the gray better so I don't know if that's true or not.

This something I have have never heard of ...but I have no gray hair ...lol I do have blond ...but my blond is orignial, and dyes look different on certain colors of hair ,so maybe try a lighter color not nessecarily blond but a lighter shade of red closer to your normal color, I do think that dyeing your hair does damage it ... so either way be careful ...

I don't really know myself. i do know a elderly person who had grey hair and they dyed there hair a funny blonde/brown. (think they wanted to look younger bless 'em) if it's true it could explain why he's still got the same colour. i doubt he does it regulary because he doesn't go out to often. Anyways. Kudos! ~Joey

That's cute. I have heard some people say they would rather go gray/silver when they reach a certain age in life. I think that's fine but I think I wait and do that when I'm eligible for Social Security. In the meantime, I'm going to do whatever it takes to cover the gray. LOL
