I learned that no matter the culture, women sometimes have no choice but to end up in the s*x trade. But just because society pushes you that way - maybe because you are poor, maybe because you are young, maybe because women are not valued in your society - it does NOT mean that you can't over come your past and fight for the future you want.

Ii haven't read it but I want to. I like learning about different places and cultures and time periods, so historical novels and similar books are oneof my favorite genres.
I have to admit that when 'Geisha' was first published, I was a bit disappointed to learn it was written by a man, and one who isn't even of Japanese heritage. I guess I figured it woiuld be more authentic if written by a Japanese woman, but of course a good writer who does his homework can transport us anywhere and make it feel authentic.

I have not read it yet but it is on my list to ready. I love to read books where I learn about different cultures, fashion and customs.
I do not know much about the Japaneese culture yet.

i haven't read the book yet, i watched the film though... its a nice movie, i think that you are able to go reach for your dreams if you are in-love... like what happen here... she loved that man and so she made it as a geisha... its a nice story!

first of all let me just say I love the book have read it 3 times so far (the first time way before there was a talk about movie).
What I knew of geishas was totaly changes since I read the book and saw the movie. It was a wonderful mixture of good novel with lots of history, tradition, romance and all the rest.
