Last summer my husband worked merchandising garden plants. I showed him the Star Jasmine. He bought me one at the end of the season. I was afraid I would kill it, but it fluorished and is blooming like crazy. Do you have any blooming plants? Do you know the jasmine?

Years ago when I lived in Washington I bought a dying leftover jasmine plant at the supermarket, after mothers day. I trimmed it up and fertilized it after repotting it. I hung it in my kitchen window and just watered it and it began to grow... and grow. It went across both sides of the curtain and down both sides of the window.. Ohe when it bloomed you could smell it thoughout the whole house.

You are a rescuer like me. I love to try to save the plants that are neglected in the stores.

Ohhh, I envy your jasmine! They smell so good and are so pretty! I have never had any luck with them. My grandmother had one and it did very well. Be very careful with your pets, all parts of the jasmine are poisinous if ingested! Enjoy it!

My cats content themselves with the spider plant, and it is non toxic. It looks enough like grass to satisfy them, but thanks so much for the info.

Oh I do know the Star Jasmine. I managed to get one near the end of the last season also. It is out on the patio over wintering. IT is far from blooming as it is freezing here right now.
What I do have blooming is the Orchid. My first one and am I please. Even though it is not a scented one it is breathtakingly beautiful.
Good for you in the Star Jasmine. I can hardly wait until mine blooms as well.
Best to you and yours for 2011!

I have never attempted an Orchid either as I thought they were far to fussy to bother with but to my surprise, after a friend gave me one as a gift, it is blooming like crazy. Likes to be watered once a week, not drenched, warm days, cool nights. A really neat plant.
Well here it has dipped to about -3. I have since brought the Star Jasmine in and is under the lights. Once the pot thaws a bit, I will give it some water. The stems are still green :D
Hopefully this is a positive sign that it will manage to spring back and give some new life in the next few months.

I eventually lost the plant, it gets much too cold here. I have never even attempted an orchid.

Oh how wonderful for you! They are truely a beautiful flower and they smell so great. It is so cold here that there wont be flowers anytime soon but my daffadils and tulips are up several inches. Spring will surely come soon. Happy for you though.

Oh you, Lucky Ducky!
Years ago, I had, what I thought was,
honeysuckle plants in the yard.
They smelled simply divine.
And, they smelled even more amazing
just as they were dying, kind of like
nature's last ditch effort to attract
bees for pollination.
I've never forgotten that amazing smell.
And, over the years, I've tried to
keep honeysuckle in the house, but it
just doesn't smell the same.
So, I'm thinking it must have been wild jasmine
growing in the yard.
Don't know how it would have gotten there.
Maybe the last remnant of someone's garden.
Later, a neighbor mowed over the bushes
that were at the edge of our property and
sad to say, no more good smelling flowers in
the yard.

My star jasmine did not survive that winter. On the other hand, I have a wild clematis or fall clematis, flowers look like star jasmine, kind of, and they bloom in the fall and smell very sweet.

That's a beautiful plant, isn't it?! Wish I had one, they smell so wonderful! I have clematis outside, forsythia, magnolia, and hummingbird vine; the magnolia's the only one that smells great. Inside I have my orchid collection. They're plants that have been handed down to me and go all the way back to the late 1800's. The containers for those are huge, so huge that when they bloom the blooms are almost the size of a saucer. I love blooming plants, they cheer us up so much just by looking at them.

I have this in a pot,as I am afraid it would not withstand a Kansas winter. I have a wild clematis, or what my mother called a kitchen clematis, that is fragrant, climbs fences and also has small white flowers. I had forgotten about it until you posted. I have heard of mock orange, but never been around one.

I really love the smell of jesmine, it has such a wonderful smell. Lucky you to get a jesmine blooming crazy.
As we are in apartment we don't have much facilities for keeping flower pot. But I would love to have some flower around when we will get a house.

I never had a star jasmine but would like to have one. The only blooming plant I have right now is an african violet. I had this plant for for at least 10 years and it still blooms for me.I am from kansas and it is to cold out right now to be planting any plants. Cant wait untill spring so I cant plant all my flowers.

Not so heavenly for those who suffer from the volatile chemical component that its perfume emits. It is an extremely toxic plant to humans, birds, reptiles, cats and dogs. A third of the population suffer from its effects. The symptoms include severe repiratory problems and itchy to burning skin.

Mine did not last out the whole winter. For me, it was not a problem. I am more sensitive to fragrances that are made in a chemist's lab.

I think jasmine is also the same as our national flower, it's called 'sampaguita'. This flower as most of our old folks do, is to put it on their patrons' images, because of it's heavenly scent!;) It is also use as for adornimg and as ornaments for decorations, like for festivities and other celebrations
You really are so correct about it's heavenly smell..
