Would you send you child to a school that teaches NASCAR basics? |

| They can learn to assemble a race car engine and tear apart its transmission. This is in Lima, Ohio and is one of a handful of places that students can study how to build a race car from the bottom up. The high performance motorsports program readies them for a career in auto racing - whether is be working on a pit crew or in the shop. Auto racing is growing in presence on television and has appealed to mainstream fans so it has led to more leagues, teams and job opportunities in a sport that needs more highly skilled crew members. ARCA has become a stepping stone race league for crew members and drivers. They usually pair the student with an experienced crew member. Motorsports students at Indiana University-Purdue University in Indianapolis compete for internships in the Champ Car World Series and with the Panther Racing team in the Indy Racing League. The classes are formed around what the teams need. There are 2 and 4 year degrees in business and technologies. They even do things for off road racers. Lima appears to have started in 1993 and other colleges have since added the training, Indianapolis (Indiana) and Fremont California. So what do you think of this kind of program and would you send your kids? | | Race car school | | | | |

| | I think it's a great thing for kids that have an interest in cars or the mechanics of cars. I think kids learn a lot more and a lot better when they're interested in what they're being taught. What better experience for a kid then getting hands on training from a pro. Sounds great to me. | | | | | | |

| | It sounds like a neat program. I am not a NASCAR fan, but I would love to go to this school, just for ll that can be learned!! I would send my children to this school. Even if they didn't pursue a NASCAR career, they would learn a lot that would benefit them in life and could save them a lot of money on automobile reapairs! | | | | | | |

| | More importantly to me, it would give them a sense of "can do" experience and the confidence to try things they hadn't considered before. | | | |

| | WillowLady...A lot of things wouldn't translate exactly but the basics are all there. Pretty much everything I can do on a street car, I learned on a race car first. Plus it's a confidence booster...if you can fix a race car, a street car sounds easy. | | | |

| | If my child grew up and took an interest in that kind of stuff, and it was taught in an option, I'd certainly send her/him to that school, but if it was mandatory, I would not. I am interested in individual interests, and think that education needs to cater to them. This is a great option, but not as a compulsery course. | | | | | | |

| | Wow, I certainly would. I feel there needs to be more types of 'secondary' schools than just the traditinal colleges. Not everyone finds their niche in a regular collge. If auto racing is a teen's passion why not send them to something that builds upon that passion and makes them a productive member of society doing something they love, rather than sending them to college to become something they don't love and will burn out in a few years! (that's only if they stay and graduate!) Case in point, I husband's nephew loved art and was a great artist. His senior year he wanted to go to an art school after graduation (and I have no doubt that he would have not only gotten accepted but would have been highly successuful) but his parents said no. They made him go to college and get a business degree. He is managing a drug store now and is so miserable. (actually diagnosed w/ depression). I often wonder where he would be today if he had followed his heart. | | | | | | |

| | My ex actually wanted to put both the kids into Junior Dragster school and get them racing when they each turned 8 yrs old but I was dead set against it...I think now that they are older though I'd be all for it..theyre both pretty good with motorized things LOL they have one of those motorized scooters that their dad had bought them the yr he died, they both drive the John Deere and have driven our truck too actually and they're pretty damn skilled LOL.....I dont think my son would be into it but my daughter would...more so Drag racing though because thats what her dad did and she LOVED it... | | | | | | |

| | Come to think of it, my daughter would LOVE the whole wrenching on engines part LOL she used to help her dad in the pit at the garage, wrenchin on his car and she LOVES taking things apart, figuring otu how they work then putting them back together again...she'd really get a total kick out of this school thing now that I really think about it..and its actually a good way to get kids familiar with the in's and outs of how an engine works whihc if you are goin to drive on the road at some point, isnt a bad thing ya know... | | | |

| | My twelve year old son is already making plans to attend this school. I'm not sure if it will be feasible for him, as he is special needs, but I think it's certainly a viable way to make a living. I would certainly send him to such a school if it were possible. | | | | | | |

| | Yes, I think it is a great idea. Not neccessarily just for Nascar. But I think it is a great idea that kids grow up knowing how to work on cars. It will save them a lot of money in the futeure,as they do not have to take their cars to mechanincs. Or the can become a mechanic and make lots of money. | | | | | | |

| | Again, these are race cars and not quite like our street cars I think. But a good start of learning about motorized vehicles and a possible good career. Thanks for responding. | | | |

| | I do not see a problem with it as I think it is good that kids learn about how cars and how they work. It could help them have a good career in being a car mechanic whether at NASCAR or at an auto dealership or car shop. Mechanics make pretty good money and it will save them money when they are adults. I would be a bit worried and scared if I had a child and they wanted to be a race car driver. I wish that I knew more about cars so that I would not have to take my car to be worked on. | | | | | | |

| | My son's friend went there and loved it. Yes, I would send my kid there. The skills learned there are not limited to Nascar, but can be carried over to the real world. And let's face it, this is the kind of job that can't be offshored and automotive technicians as they are now called, need to be highly skilled, have computer knowledge and are well paid. The jobs will not be going away and the skill level needed will likely increase as modern technology makes things more complicated. | | | | | | |
