Would You Watch A Sub-titled Movie? |
| |
| Most of my favourite films are foreign, so personally I have no problem with sub-titles. I know some people, however, who don't enjoy watching sub-titled films because they feel there is extra effort involved in reading them. I would happily choose to watch a sub-titled film, over a dubbed film, as the quality is always better. Reading the words doesn't bother me, you don't even realise you're doing it as you get into the film. How do you feel about sub-titled films? Are you happy to watch them? Do you watch them to improve your knowledge of a foreign language? Do you think there is extra 'effort' involved? | | | | | |

| | I don't mind watching subtitled movies most of the time. I don't generally watch them to improve my knowledge of a foreign language, but just to enjoy the film. There are times, though, when it seems like there's a little extra effort involved--even though I am a fast reader. I also sometimes feel like I might be missing some of the images. On days when I am tired and just want to zone out to a movie, I'd prefer something that isn't subtitled because I don't have to give it as much attention or effort. | | | | | | |

| | I agree that there are times when there is some extra effort involved, especially if the subtitles are the same colour as the background, reading becomes a little difficult! Thank you for your response :) | | | |

| | I don't like them at all. I'm very careful if I am renting a movie from the foreign movie section that it is not done in sub titles. Also, I would never go to a theatre that is showing a movie with sub titles. I think they take away from the presentation of the show itself. Once in a while there will be a show in English with a few subtitles. I don't mind that at all. | | | | | | |

| | There is some extra effort to read the subtitles but it is worth it. Some of the best films i've seen were French with English subtitles.I refuse to watch dubbed films. They don't sound right. It never is exactly in-sync with the picture. | | | | | | |

| | I completely agree with dubbed films, they are always out of sync, and it's very off-putting to watch them. Thank you for your response :) | | | |

| | My husband and I are big fans of foreign movies. Once you get used to subtitles, it's not a big deal and you actually forget that you are reading them. I think that French, Italian and Spanish films are the best as the storylines are complex and the characters are interesting. The latest one that I saw was Labertino del Fauno, El (Pan's Labrynth). Very touching with some very interesting creatures. | | | | | | |

| | I saw 'Pan's Labyrinth' recently, and thought it was brilliant. The sub-titles didn't detract from the experience at all. Thank you for your response :) | | | |

| | I enjoy foreign films and, like you, prefer sub-titles to dubbing. While it happens rarely, my experience is that the most successful foreign films actually make you forget that the subtitles are even there. It's kind of like watching yet another Tom Hanks movie...sometimes, he can be so good you forget its Tom Hanks. Other times, you look at the screen and you think "this is Tom Hanks." The same is true for subtitles. Sometimes, I am completely captivated by the film and the subtitles just don't matter, while other times I'm completely aware of how hard I worked to watch the film. In 2006, 5 out of my Top 10 films were foreign films including: Tsotsi, Mother of Mine, Pan's Labyrinth, The Death of Mr. Lazarescu and L'Enfant. Additionally, I rated Water (Canadian/Indian) in my Top 10. The films with subtitles require a bit more patience and, ultimately, someone who's a good reader. So, they're definitely not for everyone. Still, I think far too many Americans are missing some amazing films by dismissing a film solely because of the subtitles. | | | | | | |

| | I find that with most foreign films, I forget I'm reading after a while. 'Pan's Labyrinth' seems to be very popular! Thank you for your response :) | | | |

| | I have ADD so I know how to multitask. I can do a subtitle just as well as a normal film with no problem to me! However, I dont see these type of films that often. But I have on occasion and still enjoyed them! Except I didnt like Crouchin Tiger, Sitting Dragon (title) cause it had this "scene" and I was with my dad only at the time (had to see it for school) and I was like EW not good thing to watch *L* On the tv show "Heroes" they have subtitles sometimes cause they speak in Japanese two of the characters do and thats how you gotta read it. So I miss things when they are in subtitles. Thats the only thing I hate. To miss something cause its like that. | | | | | | |

| | There are times when it's inconvenient to have subtitles. You have to actively watch the movie at all times, you can't look away and just listen. Thank you for your response :) | | | |

| | I've been watching sub-titled movies since I was a kid. My parents were into then so I practically grew up looking at them. It's not even an effort I have to make because I'm so used to it. Also some of the best movies are foreign. It's also cool when you learn a few foreign words! | | | | | | |

| | I've watched a few subtitle movies, if you see Passion of the Christ it's a subtitle movie and it was great. I think it helps you to really pay attention to whats going on in the movie. Also if you're at a movie theatre like I was theres not too much talking because everyones reading. | | | |

| | i like to watch subtitled film when i am interested in the film itself, and when i just want to improve my listening skill(english is my second language, while chinese my mother tone and japanese the third language.), i'd like there's no substitle i will change channel whenever i met a dubbed film, the dubbings sound rediculous. | | | | | | |
