Stir Fry. Do I really need to use a WOK or will my frying pan do?

I use a frying pan. My mom gave me an expensive wok that sat on a burner, but it was so huge and a pain in the butt to store and bother with. Simplicity is my rule!

I used to use a wok all the time. I had a nice hand hammered one. I loved it. My mom makes stir fry and she's never owned a wok. I found some information that you might find helpful. I do think the wok makes it better but that's just my opinion. I don't like the nonstick ones, I think if you are going to bother with one get a hand hammered one. You can also steam foods in them, they are great for cookiing all kinds of things.

I used to use just a regular skillet when I made stirfry, but i was kinda hard to toss everything around because the sides were so shallow. I finally broke down and bought a wok and am glad I did. It doesn't make the stirfry taste any better but it's a lot easier to cook with.

I've always used my frying pan-just because I don't have a wok. But I do think that cast-iron is better for stir fry. Blessings

I have a wok and I don't think it makes much difference at all in how well something comes out stir frying. The only thing I note that's different is that due to the rounded bottom of the wok, you don't have to use as much oil, grease or butter, to do the same job. A frying pan spreads the oils out and you end up using more of it. Also, with the wok you can keep sliding the more cooked items up towards the top sides more, as opposed to sitting there in the oils and cooking even more. I still use my frying pan more than my wok when I stir fry.

I like to use the wok better for stir fry. It is better because of the shape. The sides allow the oil to drip off, as you place the foods on the rack on the side of the wok. It also heats different from a pan, so you can quickly stir it around, and it will not fall out, as the sides are high.

I had a wok once but I hated it and the stir fries were no better than they were in my frying pan. I guess there are many who swear by their wok or they would not sell so many of them but I am not one of those people.
