Ok, it's time to start thinking about ways to improve your gardens and yard for the spring and summer. New garden decor, outdoor decor, new plants to change the look of things, etc.
For me, I'm planting hostas in the garden at the base of my back deck, I've planted sedum in one of the gardens, I've put out a gazing ball that I was given, and I am going to try to make a tepee trellis, plant some vining flowers by my bedroom window, ....I've got several plans, mostly to add some groundcovers that will help me not have so many weeds to deal with. I'm also trying to incorporate a birdbath/ fountain in the back yard and adding some more plants that are native to the area.
How about you? What are you planning to give your outdoors a different look this year?

My planting scheme is in very good shape as it is a well established garden. I always have older plants that are ending their life expectance, so that is the sort of thing I can get creative. When I have a gap to fill because one of the shrubs or trees dies, I tour garden centers looking for inspiration. This year I think a nice way to spruce things up would be with some new patio furniture.

i'd love to find some comfortable chairs for my deck. I can't sit in the ones i've got, they hurt my back so bad. I'd like to invest in a small grill, too. Thanks for the response..happy gardening!

Well, I am planning to place trellis on the west side of my front porch and planting hyathcent beans on it. Eventually, having a wisteria vine. (love the scent of wisteria!) I've started some perinneal flowers to take over some empty spots the annuals left.
I still plan to take Rusty--my 4 year old metal puppy and place him by my front steps. He's such a wonderful dog, and people love him when they visit. It's so nice that he doesn't jump on them and get them dirty. :)
Sounds like your garden will be really fun and pretty. I love hostas and have more than my share growing around our house. It's probably time to divide some of them.

I'm going to have my usual vegetable garden, and the main reason for planting the groundcover is to cut down on the amount of weeding i have to do other than in my garden. I'll have enough to keep up with with that. Plus i really have some empty spots that get a lot of weeds...my back yard needs some color too, and i've got a beautiful baby lilac ready to go by a birdbath...i love the plants you've mentioned, and your little puppy sounds adorable...i just today put out some happy frogs and gnomes to greet people...thanks for the response and happy gardening!

The biggest thing I'd like to do for this year is to get rid of the fire ants close to the house and in the veggie garden. We've been in and out all day working on garden stuff today and just had to take a break because of my son getting into an ant pile. We've got a small sitting area where we put a bunch of hammocks so we can hang out with friends. It's pretty much enclosed with grapevines, trees and honeysuckle. We're trying to train some of the honeysuckle up as a privacy barrier from the street. Today though we're mostly working on getting in spinach, lettuce, peas, carrots, etc. My husband just finished weeding out the asparagus (this is our second year on our purple asparagus). We might try for some blue potatoes this year or next. I'm just now checking to see which of my herbs out front made it through a cold winter. The rosemary is doing great and it looks like my lavender is coming back, but not sure about some of the other stuff. Might have to replace some of the plants out there. I'd love to put a fire pit/table combo with lid out there with some chairs one of these days but I think that may have to wait.

it all sounds wonderful, specially the honeysuckle...that's what i forgot to add to my list, thaks!...lol...for the fire ants, have you tried instant grits? just sprinkle all over the top of the mound and they eat it. when they get water, it makes the grits expand and kills them. just be sure the ground is dry and you're not expecting rain for a couple of days. if you try this, let me know how it works. happy gardening!

Our summer is coming to an end here, (although it is still quite hot). Earlier this year our garden was looking a little boring so I decided my project for the next few months was to get creative in the garden. The garden was established with trees for privacy and a few ground covers. One bed had become very overgrown. We now have a fish pond with yellow water irises which are doing well. The water lilies are not doing so well. I made a rockery at the back of the pond which looks quite nice, and planted a lot of evergreen plants with flowers inbetween. Mainly impatiens. The verandah looks much better now, with a small leafed creeper and pot plants and flowers. Also added some white pebbles which are quite popular here at the moment. The front garden is my favourite. We also left the big trees and planted evergreen plants and ground covers. There are also quite a few flowers, roses, zinnias, impatiens, lavender, agapanthas and we made borders with white and brown pebbles along some of the beds. We laid a footpath with peace in the home between the slabs. A lovely water feature of a statue of a lady holding a water bowl is coming during this week. The bird feeder has been painted and it all looks quite nice. Most of all I thoroughly enjoyed my project and it is still ongoing. I must add though that a gardner comes to help once a week. He is a Godsend. All the best for you and your garden.

I am thinking about buying two rose bushes. I think they are called Knock Out Rose, my neighbor has two and they are gorgeous. I am also planning a tropical garden in my back yard. I would like to purchase a patio set, but it depends on finances.

I barely have time to do anything between 4 kids, working and single mom. We also have an above ground pool. Most of the time I spend cleaning out the pool when I think I might be getting in it. I try to do some things in the yard like shrubs and a few flowers. It gets so hot here they die instantly. I was wondering if you could give me few hints on some outdoor things that keep up themselves basically. I live in South Carolina and we get in to the 100's here.

being from Georgia, I know how you feel! I would suggest you check with your local Lowe's. They have a really good variety of plants that are drought resistant...stick with perennials, they'll come back each year and you don't have to continue to replant. Of course, it all depends on what part of SC you live in. Planting native plants in your yard is a good conservation practice and they are just beautiful!..Pampas grass is beautiful, a lot of rose varieties are drought resistant, good luck and let me know how it's going!

Hubby has ordered me some climbing roses, summer lilacs, and blue bushes. Where I am going to put all of them? I have no idea. My sister has given me a 'million' daffodil bulbs. Where am I going to put them? No clue. I am going to start planting this week!

We have started to order flowers that will come back every year and they attract birds and butterflies. We did one spot last year and plan to do another this year. Don't spend so much money on flowers then. Want to plant a nice garden again too. Money is tight this year but always like a nice looking flower beds.

i stick with perennials, as i just don't have the time or money to do it over again every year. I love plants that attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Happy gardening!
