Healthy alternative to crisps (potato chips)

I always crave crisps when I'm sitting in the evening working on the computer once the kids have gone to bed.
I love how they crunch, the greasiness of them and the salt.
Does anyone know of a healthier alternative that still gives you same amount of satisfaction as a delicious crunchy crisp?

Well, my sister would munch on baby carrot sticks with dip. I don't like that much, so I munch on Stacey's Pita Chips (Baked, Simply Naked, Nothing but sea salt). It is crunchy and I eat it as it is, or I dip it in Hummus dip (brand name is Tribe). I've noticed that I have not gained weight, as compared to when I would munch on a bag of chips (like potato chips). I'm afraid of the cholesterol content of potato chips, that's why I tried to find an alternative. Hope you can find a healthy alternative to your craving! This is just a suggestion. Happy myLotting!

You can always buy the "baked" version of your favorite chip, you get all the great taste and less of the guilt. I gave up potato chips awhile ago and now I eat dried apples and other fruit. In the states they are sold in bags int he produce section called "apple crisps", I don't know if they have them where you are, but I'm sure you can find something similar.

Have you ever noticed that no matter what size bag of chips you have,it all dissapears fast?We know that plain popcorn is better for you as is celery(add cheese whiz or something on it).But one of the best things to replace the chips with is your partner's tongue.

Try making very thing slices of potatoe ( I use that long blade on my grater
) and season it
For instance put in a ziplock bag, 1 tbs olive oil, 1 tbs water, 1 tbs parsley, 1 tbs paprika and coat your potato slices with the blend - also try 1 tbs oil, 1 tbs vinegar, 1 tbs garlic, 1 tbs ginger ( let set for 30 min in the fridge) and coat the slices
Put the slices on aluminum foil or better parchment paper - bake at 315 F until golden an crispy
Add garlic salt and you can dip it in low fa t dressing, dijon mustard, tomatoe sauce or even yogurt or ricotta
Hope you will like it

I also love chips (i'm from the states, so we call them chips). I love anything from that section of the store in fact. They are definitely my dieting downfall.
Some healthy alternatives might be pretzels or popcorn. I like the large hard sourdough pretzels, and you can dip this in a low fat dip to make you feel like you are eating chips.
As far as popcorn goes, even though I know that air-popped is the healthiest I think it it tastes the worst. I perfer making my popcorn on the stove top with just a tiny bit of oil. Then I add salt, and even some spicy seasoning (like cajun seasoning). Making it on the stove top makes it tastes less like styrafoam and more like corn.

I love to make crispy chick peas for snacking. I got the recipe from a vegatarian fat free website and they have the bonus of also being vegan. When I make these, I like to vary the spices I use. Sometimes I will make them spicy or cajun flavored, and other times I will use Italian seasonings. They are really easy to make and also really cheap.
Chickpea Crunchies
2 cups cooked chickpeas, drained well and blotted dry
1/2 teaspoon each of the following seasonings:
salt (if you used canned beans reduce or eliminate the salt)
freshly ground black pepper
ground cumin
ground coriander
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F
2. Toss the chickpeas with seasonings and spread on a nonstick baking
sheet and bake for 30-40 minutes or until golden brown and crisp.
Makes about 1 1/4 cups (serves 4)
If you have the time, you should check out www.fatfree.com. Their snack section is quite good and things are labeled clearly for vegans.

Oh, I forgot, that recipe is from Debbie Cowherd. Gotta give credit where credit is due.

Here are a few things I have thought of that aren't' quite as unhealthy. There are veggie chips/sticks that aren't too bad. I found some at Central Market here. You can probably find them at a place like whole foods market near you. There are things called Veggie Booty and also Veggie sticks. They are crunchy, yet don't have as much fat.
You could also try fruit/veg chips called flat earth. These are really quite good. They sell them at my regular grocery store.
And then, there is always popcorn as long as you don't put too much butter and salt on it.
good luck.

You can go to a healthfood store and buy organic potato chips. They are not supposed to have all that oil and other unhealthy ingredients.
I have tried them and they are good.
Oh, I'm hungry now!! lol!

Apple chips i suppose, I use to crave for potato chips too. But now I'm craving for cantaloupes & honeydews. before I go to bed I don't miss eating some. The juicyness and everything makes me drool just thinking about it. And it's healthy.

I am not sure what to recomend to you. The closest thing I can think of are nuts - even if they are as fattening they are much more healthy. Dried fruit - but they are not that greasy. Not very easy to find a replacement for the crisps.

I love potato chips too but had to cut down for health reasons. These days, I'd try to have more fruits. They're tasty too. My favourites are mangoes, oranges and apples.
If you really need some salt, I'd recommend guava with salty sour brownish powder. It's crunchy, slightly salty and a little sour and is a healthier alternative.
You could also consider cereal. There are some nice crunchy oat clusters that can be found in the cereal section of the supermaket. Those are good alternatives too.
Good luck! :)

Well there are lot of healthy snacks you can eat when you crave for potato chips. I feel one should eat nuts they are realy healthy be it walnuts, cashewnuts, almonds. You can munch them without feeling guilty. I feel eating homemade banana and apple chips are also healthy to eat if prepared correctly. I myself eat fresh fruits and yoghurt and drink fruit juices for snacks mostly. Though i east sweets sometimes during festivals though. And drink lots of water will also reduce your cravings for potato chips i feel. Good luck. :)

Oh I know, I also love chips. My husband and I always have some kind of chips at night when the kids finally go to bed and we're watching our favorite shows. They have alot of new baked chips now that are healthy. We buy our snacks at wal-mart so on the chip isle they have alot of new healthy chips. Also rice cakes are the best! I know, might sound gross, but they have flavored ones, my favorite is the caramel flavored ones, they are crunchy, not too plain, just right! Especially when you're craving something that's not too sweet or too salty.

You can try banana chips, i do not know if unripe bananas are available in your area. If it is, you just cut it thinly and fry it like french fries. What we do is sprinkle a bit of sugar while its still super hot. But i think you do not want your kids to have much sugar.
You can also use sweet potato as a good alternative.

Hi,
I have had the same problem, but my co-worker told me about kale chips. Basically you bake them and sprinkle them with salt and vinegar. They are very crispy and, by default, healthier for you!
Also, a great alternative is olives (I'm thinking the unripened, green kind). This Web site has some info (not spam, it's just a long address): http://is.gd/emML.
